Chapter 36 - Ironveil Trial [3]

Zane was standing a few meters away from Instructor Eldros. The trial was actually pretty easy, all he needed to do was cast the five basic Thaleward spells.

Zane stood silently, preparing his self, people were taking a glance at him, whispering were also growing louder, as time passed by.

Zane then focused on the man with a long black hair and a fearsome demeanor, he was finally going to start casting the spells. Zane released a heavy sigh, and raised his hand, this time he wasn't using his enchanted wand. He wanted to show everyone, that this time, he wasn't relying on the mana his wand possessed.

Zane was going to cast the first spell, called Aegis Veil. A semi-transparent shield that blocks both physical and magical attacks. Unlike ordinary barriers, the Aegis Veil absorbs a portion of incoming energy, converting it into a temporary boost for the caster's next spell or physical strike.

As Zane raised his hand, aiming at the empty space in front of him, people around him were finally taking interest on the trial. Before, their demeanor simply spoke of how this trial is simply another failed attempt. However, seeing as Zane wasn't going to use his enchanted wand, they couldn't help but stop whatever they were doing.

Even Instructor Eldros, couldn't help but look at Zane strangely. Lyra who was watching Zane, also couldn't help but feel shocked, on what Zane is doing. Was Zane going to be reckless again? They were going to know.

A moment afterwards, Zane began casting the spell. The sight in front of him started to change, suddenly, a semi-transparent, circling all around Zane, could be seen forming. And as it did, the air around him started to changed.

Zane had now completed his first barrier spell.

The moment Zane casted the spell, the atmosphere around him suddenly froze. All he could see were eyes as wide it can be, as if seeing a ghost. Zane who couldn't even cast the first barrier spell before, who struggled to even cast the simplest barrier spell, was now gone.

Lyra who was watching Zane with such a worried expression, now looked at Zane with disbelief. Without even knowing, words came out of her mouth.

"N-no way... he really did!"

Instructor Eldros also couldn't help but widen his eyes in disbelief. Before, he had thought that Zane was being reckless again, trying to cast a barrier spell without his enchanted wand. However, it seems that he was proven wrong.

Zane held the spell for a while, before cancelling it. Right after he did, he suddenly started to perform the next spell.

Umbra Ward, a shadowy dome that bends light, making everything inside slightly invisible and distorting attacks. Even if the enemy strikes the barrier, their attacks may miss due to optical illusions.

Without even wasting anymore time, he casted the next spell, and then the next one, until he casted all 5 of the barrier spells.

As Zane completed the trial, a smile appeared on his face, with not even a hint of tiredness showing on his handsome face. Everyone around him looked at him with disbelief, their eyes wide, and their mouths slightly open. No one could say a word at the sight in front of them.

Except Ronin, who was secretly watching Zane doing the trial. Instead of a shock expression showing on his face, a wide smile could be seen on it instead. Somehow, he already expected this, considering that he was able to cast an advance spell last time.

Meanwhile, Lyra's face became even more dumbfounded. Her hands were slightly trembling, not believing the sight in front of her. Not only had Zane completed the trial, he also did it without a sweat at all. Back then, Zane would have struggled to do even the first one. But now, he casted those spells as if, it as all light work to him. Not only that, he also casted all those spells without his enchanted wand, which made it even more shocking.

'...Since when did Zane change so much?!'

Instructor Eldros' face was also no different, he was just as dumbfounded as everyone else. His eyes were wide and trembling, as he spoke the words Zane had always wanted to hear his entire life.

"...You passed."

Hearing Instructor Eldros' words, Zane couldn't help but smile widely. He wanted to hear those words so much, and now, he finally did. However, he wasn't really that shocked or surprised as anyone else, since he already expected this.

He knew he was going to pass, but, still hearing those words touched his heart so much.

As Instructor Eldros said those words, the atmosphere around him started to change. Before it had been quite, very quite and gloomy. Now, it was full of disbelief and amazement. In their eyes, they were looking at a man who never gave up, and kept moving forward, despite failing so much already. It was nothing sort of inspiring.

After a moment of pause from Instructor Eldros, he finally spoke once again, this time another word that was enough to melt Zane's heart.

"I will inform the patriarch about your departure. Congratulations, Zane. I will be leaving now."

Zane's face remained unchanged, as well as Lyra's face. Her face was still full of awe and amazement, and Zane's face spoke of relief.

Zane watched as Instructor Eldros disappeared in the distance. Although Instructor Eldros didn't seem that impressed, Zane felt the opposite. After all, Instructor Eldros wasn't the type of person to show emotions, as emotions can be a sign of weakness, however, Instructor Eldros had an unusual look on his face as he started to leave the training ground.

...He was proud of Zane.

Lyra then started to approach Zane, and hugged him tightly, she then said: "Congratulations, Zane!"

Zane took a step back, as Lyra hugged him, he then said: "Thanks, Lyra."

...

Zane was lying down on his bed, with his lower body hanging at the edge of his bed. On the ground, a bunch of bags, full of clothes and things could be seen. He was also breathing heavily and sweat was dripping down his forehead.

'Tired... too tired...'

A day has passed since he had passed the trials. Ronin was now outside, waiting for him to finish packing his things. As well as Lyra, since Lyra was his personal maid, she was also going to come with Zane in the main castle.
