Chapter 336: Testing the Limit

As soon as the spear struck its mark, time returned to normal.

It happened gradually.

Morriva and Nerissa were the first ones to break free from the external influence.

Both of them glanced down at their hands, clenching their fists a few times to check whether the external influence was really gone or not. Once sure their movements were normal and their own again, the two wasted no time and rushed toward Lucivar.

He was drowned in dust, so the two didn’t really know if he was fine or not.

Morriva glanced to the side to check on the Blood Nuns.

She wanted them to be ready in case Lucivar got severely wounded and needed immediate attention.

But the Blood Nuns were still frozen in time, so she couldn’t do anything.

Nerissa was the first one to see the ruin.

She stopped beside what was once a two-story house that was now completely shattered.

At the center, the destruction was shaped like a hole, showing that Lucivar’s body had gone through it.

Moving onward, Nerissa’s heart pounded as there was more than one house in the same condition.

It must’ve been quite devastating for Lucivar to eat that spear head-on.

Even with the protection of his wings, it would still be damaging.

“Lucivar! Where are you?!”

Nerissa called, looking around in worry as she couldn’t find him anywhere, even though she followed the path of the destruction. She coughed a couple of times as the dust found its way into her lungs, but she continued searching with rising concern.

Eventually, her eyes caught sight of a silhouette in the distance.

Assuming that it was Lucivar, she sprinted toward that silhouette.

And when it came to view, she gasped, covering her mouth with both her hands.

It was Lucivar.

He was pinned against the city wall that was on the verge of crumbling, with the zephyr spear stabbing through his left wing and then his chest. Blood dyed the wall behind him in a splash, and more blood coated the spearhead brutally.

Each droplet that fell to the ground made a light, ticking sound.

“Lucivar…”

Nerissa whimpered, approaching him with trembling steps.

She reached for his foot with her hand, tears welling up in her eyes as she tried shaking him.

But there was no response.

Lucivar’s body sagged, devoid of strength, his head and limbs hanging limply toward the earth.

“A-Aaahh…” Nerissa’s whimper grew louder as she shook him harder, demanding a response that never came, no matter how hard she shook him. Purple chaos ether began to sizzle—from her like vapor, reacting to her emotions, “Lucivar! Wake up! Please wake up!”

Hearing Nerissa’s voice filled with anguish, Morriva caught up to her.

Similarly, her body also stiffened at the sight.

From the position of the spear, she knew that it stabbed through Lucivar’s heart without a doubt.

Unlike Nerissa, Morriva was calmer.

She approached and pushed Nerissa aside before trying to get Lucivar down.

Even though tears were wetting her cheeks, she seemed to be composed as she tried to pull the spear out but failed miserably. She was zapped by the spear’s rampaging energy. Doing it with both her hands engulfed in her emerald flames also showed no result.

It was clear that she needed help.

“Help me get him down. I can’t do it on my own.”

“I-I can’t…”

“Get a grip! Are you going to let him hang?!”

Morriva glared at Nerissa, fuming as she couldn’t bear to see Lucivar in this position any longer.

Any moment, she might lose it.

Hearing this, Nerissa nodded lightly, wiped her tears, and stood up, struggling.

She felt weak in her legs.

It wasn’t that long since Lucivar was with them, but now, somehow, he was killed.

Nerissa used her water attribute, wrapping it around the spear before being layered by Morriva’s flames, but she does not have much strength to pull it. She was too fixated on the smirk Lucivar was wearing, as if he were glad that he had died.

As she sobbed softly, she recoiled when a sudden heat burned her.

But it didn’t come from the spear.

Had that been the case, their hands would’ve been the ones being burned.

No, the heat stung their elbows.

Morriva also experienced the same thing.

She also fell back down and looked at her elbow, surprised that something could burn her.

Out of nowhere, Lucivar’s body flickered with emerald flames.

It wasn’t Morriva’s flames either—the aura was similar, but this one was stronger.

Swoosh!

Both of them stepped back when the flame grew more intense.

And soon enough, Lucivar’s eyes abruptly opened, revealing a pair of flaming eyeballs.

Under their gazes, the flames gathered at the entry wound, burning the spear in the process, and mending something inside Lucivar’s body. It was his heart. His heart was fixed, beating in no time, as if it were nothing more than a minor wound.

It lasted for exactly half a minute.

Once the flames were at its zenith, Lucivar greedily sucked in a deep breath as if he almost drowned.

He came back to life abruptly, surprising both Morriva and Nerissa.

Confusion was plastered evidently across his face, as he looked around, chest heaving, looking at the odd flames that his body was emanating. He looked around and realized the duo was standing in front of him, stunned.

Both of them looked like they had seen a ghost.

Then again, that depiction wasn’t that far off since Lucivar was dead seconds ago.

Realizing that he was pinned, Lucivar reached for the spear.

It retaliated, zapping Lucivar’s hands violently, but a few God strands were enough to suppress it.

“Kahrk!”

Lucivar groaned in pain as he slid down the city walls.

He cast the spear aside, letting it clatter against the ground before it gradually faded from sight.

Next, he looked up to see whether the eye was still there.

Fortunately, it was already gone.

“Fuck me… That hurts. Even though I already experienced it multiple times, it’s still unpleasant.”

Lucivar had tasted death hundreds of times inside the Anvil of Sutekh, thousands of times now since he had gone through it two times, but he still couldn’t get used to it. At this point, he thought he was already used to it, but no.

He was completely wrong.

Around him, the three divine beasts appeared.

Sha was sitting on top of a rubble, Gandr coiling a few paces away, and Sirrush floating above.

Lucivar glanced at them and clicked his tongue in displeasure.

“You weren’t answering me because of that eye, was it?”

“What do you think?” Gandr hissed, ambiguous as usual.

“Still, I applaud your insanity,” Sha commented while licking her paw. “You’re brave to do that.”

“Brave? More like stupidly crazy.” Sirrush argued and turned to Nerissa. “Look—she’s crying because of your stupid stunt.”

Naturally, Lucivar didn’t block that attack with all his might earlier.

Since the attack came from another avatar, Lucivar decided—that it was the perfect moment to test his newly forged physique fresh from the second phase of the Anvil of Sutekh. He was able to hold his own against the swirling spear even without using ether or God strands.

At first, he used the Protection of the Fragmented Desert ability to block the strike.

He did it in reflex.

But midway through, he cancelled the ability.

He wanted to see if his body alone could endure it.

And to his surprise, he almost did.

Even the earlier stabbed hadn’t shattered his ribs—the spearhead, flattened by design, slipped through the gaps between his ribs and pierced his heart. Had it struck vertically, it would not have pierced his heart as it simply lacked the force to break his reinforced skeleton.

Not that Horus’ avatar threw that spear seriously.

Lucivar knew that it was more of a recon attack to pinpoint his location.

It was also another reason why he didn’t take the attack seriously.

Of course, Lucivar only dared such recklessness because of the ability granted to him by Orivelle.

Infernal Bloom.

Sunna tampered with it, yes, but now that she was gone, that ability would work fine.

‘Other than it taking up a lot of ether, this is a good trick to have.’

Lucivar blinked and focused back to the moment, realizing that Morriva and Nerissa were still staring at him in shock. Nonchalantly, he raised his eyebrow, “What?” He asked flatly. “Do you really think I’d die that easily? If it’s really my end, you bet that it would be suitable to someone of my caliber.”

Despite the voice drenched in arrogance, Nerissa cried harder.

She ran and basically threw herself at him, hugging him tightly, as if he was going to disappear if she loosened up even a little.

Lucivar sat there, stunned.

He didn’t know whether he should be happy or angry.

On one side, he was happy that Nerissa mourned for him, which meant she was loyal to him absolutely.

But on the other hand, he was annoyed that she thought he’d die that easily.

“Eurghh…” Lucivar closed one eye as his eardrums were rattling. “You’re such a crybaby. Stop crying, your voice is too loud, you know. At least if you want to cry, don’t use your damn power, or do you want me to go deaf?”

“So mean…” Neriss said between sobs. “I can’t control it. You know that.”

“What?” Lucivar raised a brow as he looked at Morriva. “Are you going to cry too?”

“No…” She quickly answered, wiping her tears. “I knew you wouldn’t die that easily, Sir.”

“Good, that’s what I like to hear.”

Moments later.

Nerissa was finally able to collect herself enough to stop crying.

And time has returned to normal.

Lucivar was now watching the Blood Priests sacrificing the people of the city by tossing them into the bonfire at the city square with his arms crossed. He could feel his arcane points climbing again with each kill they did.

Behind him was a Blood Nun, tending to his wound.

On his right, Morriva stood in poise.

“Sir, who threw that spear from earlier?”

“My next enemy. A God’s avatar like me.”

Hearing this, Nerissa on his left looked at him in horror.

She wasn’t expecting there to be more. freёweɓnovel_com

“Another one? Didn’t you kill one recently? And now there’s another? How many are they?”

“Four in total. One dead. So, there are three more, and I’m going to kill each one of them. Why? Are you scared?”

Nerissa didn’t answer.

It would be a lie if she said that she wasn’t a little bit scared of the situation.

“I trust you’d win, so it doesn’t matter if I’m scared or not.”

“Good answer.”

Lucivar chuckled, knowing full well that he was going to send all three avatars to Hell.

Exactly like he did to Caldaros.

Just then, Morriva stepped closer, facing him with a determined look.

“Sir, this time, I want to help. Everything I did is to help you, and I want to help you more…”

“Of course,” Lucivar grinned. “I was planning on using both of you from the start.”
