Ascension Gates: Rise of the Beast Monarch-Chapter 55: The Inner Sanctum
The colossal gate stood before them like the entrance to another world.
Ancient symbols glowed faintly across its massive stone surface, forming intricate patterns that pulsed with a slow, steady rhythm. Each rune carried the weight of centuries, their dim light illuminating the vast chamber in a faint golden glow. The air surrounding the gate felt heavier than anywhere else in the ruins.
As if something behind it had been waiting for a very long time.
Aether stood quietly, observing the gate.
Beside him, the Flame Sovereign Pup lifted its head slightly. Its small body radiated a calm yet intense heat, and the crimson flames around it flickered with unusual intensity as it reacted to the strange energy leaking from beyond the barrier.
Rylan stretched his shoulders as he stepped closer to the gate, examining the towering structure with open curiosity.
"Well," he said with a low whistle. "If this thing gets any bigger, it’s going to need its own mountain."
Lucien ignored the comment entirely.
His sharp silver eyes scanned the ancient runes carved across the gate with careful focus. Each symbol seemed connected to the others through a complex web of energy channels.
His silver wolf stood beside him, silent and alert.
The chamber remained quiet for several seconds.
Then the ruins reacted.
The three completed pillars behind them suddenly released streams of golden light. Brilliant beams surged upward before bending toward the massive gate, pouring into the glowing symbols etched into its surface.
The runes brightened instantly.
Energy rippled across the gate like waves across a lake.
Then the deep voice of the ruins echoed once more.
"Final candidates confirmed."
"Inner Sanctum access granted."
The ground trembled beneath their feet.
With a thunderous rumble, the massive stone gate slowly began to rise.
Dust cascaded from the ceiling as ancient gears hidden deep within the ruins awakened after centuries of dormancy.
The stone barrier lifted higher and higher.
A dark corridor slowly revealed itself beyond the gate.
Cold air flowed outward from the hidden chamber like the breath of a sleeping giant.
Rylan leaned slightly forward to peer inside the newly opened passage.
"...Yeah."
He scratched his head.
"That definitely looks like the final dungeon."
Lucien stepped forward immediately.
Without hesitation.
His silver wolf followed him smoothly through the opening.
Rylan glanced toward Aether with a crooked grin.
"Well," he said casually. "After you."
Aether walked forward calmly.
Without a word, the three survivors entered the Inner Sanctum.
Behind them, the massive gate slowly lowered once more.
The heavy sound of stone grinding against stone echoed through the ruins like distant thunder.
The final stage had begun.
---
The corridor ahead was enormous.
Much larger than any section of the labyrinth they had traveled through before.
Its ceiling stretched high above them, supported by rows of massive stone pillars carved from ancient rock. Dim golden runes illuminated the passage, casting long shadows that stretched along the floor.
Ancient murals lined the walls on both sides of the corridor.
Each carving depicted scenes from a forgotten era.
Battles between beast tamers and powerful creatures.
Some murals showed enormous dragons soaring through the skies while armies of warriors fought beneath them.
Others depicted powerful tamers standing beside majestic beasts, commanding their companions with calm authority.
Yet one set of murals stood out more than the others.
Aether slowed slightly as his gaze settled on the carvings.
The mural showed a group of ancient warriors gathered inside a massive ritual chamber.
Dozens of glowing chains made of runes extended outward from their formation.
Those chains wrapped tightly around a tall humanoid figure standing at the center of the ritual.
The figure’s shape was blurred by the age of the carving.
But it was unmistakably human-like.
The figure stood calmly despite the chains binding its body.
As if it had allowed itself to be sealed.
Rylan noticed the mural as well.
"...That doesn’t look friendly."
Lucien glanced at the carving for only a brief moment.
"Ancient history."
He continued walking.
"But we didn’t come here for stories."
The corridor stretched deeper into the sanctum.
Strangely, there were no traps.
No guardians.
No challenges.
Only silence.
Which somehow made the atmosphere even more unsettling.
---
As they continued walking deeper into the corridor, something unusual began happening.
The runes carved along the walls started flickering.
At first it was subtle.
Barely noticeable.
But the deeper they traveled—
The stronger the reaction became.
Lucien frowned slightly.
"You feel that?"
Rylan nodded slowly.
"Yeah."
Energy rippled through the walls as the runes glowed brighter with each step forward.
But something strange quickly became clear.
The reaction only occurred when Aether walked nearby.
As soon as he passed a section of the corridor, the glowing runes would flare brightly for a moment before slowly dimming again.
Lucien’s eyes narrowed.
He had already suspected something unusual about Aether since the earlier trials.
Now the ruins themselves were responding to him.
Rylan noticed the pattern too.
He glanced sideways at Aether.
"...You’re doing that."
Aether didn’t respond.
But deep within his body, the mysterious golden energy stirred faintly.
It reacted to the ancient runes of the sanctum.
The sensation felt strange.
Yet familiar.
As if the ruins recognized something about him.
Something ancient.
Something long forgotten.
The Flame Sovereign Pup also seemed aware of the strange phenomenon. Its flames flickered slightly brighter as it walked beside Aether, as though sensing the invisible connection between him and the ruins.
None of them spoke further.
But the tension in the corridor slowly grew heavier with each passing step.
---
Eventually, the long corridor opened into a massive underground hall.
The Inner Sanctum Chamber.
The ceiling towered high above them, supported by enormous pillars carved with glowing ancient symbols. Golden light from countless runes illuminated the chamber in a quiet, almost sacred glow.
At the center of the hall stood a large circular platform surrounded by layers of glowing runes.
And above that platform—
A massive barrier of golden light hovered in the air.
Chains of ancient energy extended outward from the runic formations, wrapping tightly around something sealed within the barrier.
Rylan stopped walking.
"...Okay."
He stared at the glowing prison floating above the platform.
"That’s definitely the treasure."
Lucien stepped forward slowly.
His silver wolf growled softly beside him as it sensed the immense power radiating from the sealed structure.
The runic chains pulsed rhythmically with ancient energy.
Whatever was trapped inside the barrier—
It was powerful enough to require an entire sanctum to contain it.
Aether observed the structure carefully.
His gaze traced the flow of energy through the runes surrounding the platform.
The barrier wasn’t simply a prison.
It was a test.
The final trial created by the ruins.
---
The ancient voice echoed through the sanctum once again.
This time it sounded deeper.
Heavier.
As if the entire labyrinth itself was speaking.
"Final trial chamber reached."
"Ultimate inheritance located."
The runes surrounding the central platform began glowing brighter.
Energy surged across the chamber like waves of light.
The voice continued.
"Final candidates must prove worthiness."
Rylan sighed.
"Of course there’s another trial."
Lucien stepped closer to the platform without hesitation.
"Then let’s begin."
But the ruins were not finished speaking.
The voice echoed again through the sanctum.
"Inheritance selection begins."
"Barrier will open... for one worthy challenger."
The chains surrounding the glowing barrier began shifting slowly.
Energy rippled through the ancient seals.
But then something unexpected happened.
The moment Aether stepped closer—
The runes across the entire chamber flickered violently.
The barrier reacted instantly.
The chains tightened for a brief moment.
Then loosened slightly.
Lucien noticed immediately.
His eyes locked onto Aether.
"...Interesting."
The ruins were responding to him again.
Even more strongly than before.
Even the barrier sealing the inheritance seemed unstable in his presence.
Rylan blinked in confusion.
"Okay, that’s weird."
The ancient voice spoke again.
But this time—
There was a brief pause in the system.
As if the ruins themselves were hesitating.
"Candidate evaluation... recalculating."
Deep beneath the sanctum...
Inside the hidden sealed chamber where the mysterious observer had been watching everything unfold...
The projections flickered suddenly.
The ancient systems controlling the ruins began reacting unpredictably.
The observer leaned forward slowly.
Watching the projection of Aether standing before the barrier.
The runic chains surrounding the inheritance flickered again.
The ruins had not reacted this way in centuries.
Curiosity slowly transformed into intense focus.
Because the final stage had begun.
And soon—
The true secret hidden within the ruins would reveal itself.
The chamber fell silent once more.
The glowing barrier continued pulsing slowly above the platform.
Waiting.
For the moment when the inheritance would finally awaken.
