Chapter 50: Chapter 50: Echoes of the Ancient Sanctum

The staircase descended deep beneath the labyrinth.

Each step Aether took echoed softly through the ancient stone corridor, the faint sound traveling far into the darkness below. The staircase spiraled downward with a slow, almost ceremonial curve, as if it had been designed not merely as a path, but as a descent into something sacred—or forbidden.

The deeper he went, the colder the air became.

Moisture clung to the stone walls, and the faint scent of ancient dust filled the corridor. Purple runes carved along the walls glowed faintly, illuminating the path ahead with a dim, mystical light that pulsed gently like a heartbeat.

Beside him, the Flame Sovereign Pup walked quietly.

Its crimson flames flickered steadily, casting dancing shadows along the walls and ceiling. Every few steps, the firelight revealed new carvings hidden within the stone—ancient symbols and strange beast-like figures that seemed to watch silently as the pair descended deeper into the ruins.

Unlike the chaotic battlefields above, where every corridor had been filled with monsters and ambushes, this part of the ruins felt... calm.

Too calm.

The silence here was heavier. Older.

Aether continued walking without hesitation, his expression calm as always, until the long staircase finally ended.

The corridor opened into a vast underground chamber. But this chamber was different from the others.

It was not a battlefield.

It resembled an ancient ceremonial hall.

Massive stone pillars rose toward the high ceiling, each carved with intricate engravings that had survived the passage of countless centuries. The pillars depicted warriors standing beside majestic beasts, battles between powerful tamers, and symbols that no longer existed in the modern world.

Some carvings showed creatures so enormous that even the strongest beasts of the current era would appear small beside them.

At the center of the chamber stood a large circular platform made of smooth black stone.

Surrounding it were tall stone tablets arranged in a wide ring. Each tablet was covered with glowing runic inscriptions that slowly pulsed with ancient energy.

Aether stepped closer.

The moment he approached the platform—

The runes on the tablets activated. Soft golden light spread outward across the chamber, flowing from one tablet to the next like a network awakening from a long slumber.

Then something unexpected happened.

Images began appearing above the tablets. Floating projections formed from pure light.

Ancient memories.

Aether stood silently as the projections stabilized. The first image showed a vast ancient city.

Towering structures reached into the sky, built from shining white stone and strange metallic materials that reflected sunlight like mirrors. Massive bridges connected enormous towers, and glowing energy flowed through the streets like rivers of light.

Beast tamers walked proudly through the city.

But these tamers were different from those of the current era. The creatures beside them radiated overwhelming power.

Dragons with wings large enough to eclipse the sky.

Serpents coiled around mountains.

Massive lion-like beasts wreathed in storms and lightning.

Even humanoid beings surrounded by immense spiritual energy.

The civilization displayed in the projection was far beyond the current world.

Then the image changed.

Darkness appeared across the horizon.cA massive battlefield unfolded.

Hundreds—perhaps thousands—of powerful beasts and tamers fought desperately against something hidden within the shadows.

The projection did not show the enemy clearly.

Only glimpses. A massive silhouette.

Something vast and terrible lurking behind waves of darkness. The battle raged across the sky and earth alike.

Entire mountains collapsed. Storms of energy tore open the clouds.

Even the powerful dragons seemed small against whatever force they were fighting.

Then the scene changed again. The surviving tamers gathered together.

Using enormous ritual formations, they began constructing the labyrinth. Layer after layer of protective barriers formed.

The ruins.

The trials.

The guardians.

Everything had been built with a single purpose. Sealing something deep beneath the earth. Aether’s eyes narrowed slightly.

Whatever they had sealed...

It must have been powerful enough to threaten an entire ancient civilization.

The projection slowly faded.

The runes on the tablets dimmed again.

Silence returned to the chamber. But Aether had learned something important.

The ruins were not merely protecting an inheritance. They were protecting something sealed.

The Flame Sovereign Pup tilted its head slightly as if trying to understand what it had just witnessed. Even its instincts seemed curious.

Aether turned toward the deeper exit of the chamber. The stone gate there had opened quietly during the projection.

The path ahead was now clear. Which meant the trials were not finished yet.

Elsewhere in the Labyrinth

Far above, the labyrinth was still alive with conflict. Rylan sprinted through another twisting corridor, his footsteps echoing loudly through the stone passage.

Behind him, the giant armored beast he had encountered earlier continued chasing him relentlessly.

The creature resembled a massive beetle.

Its entire body was covered in thick metallic armor plates that reflected the dim purple light of the ruins. Each step it took caused the ground to tremble slightly.

Rylan glanced over his shoulder with an irritated expression.

"Why are you still following me?!"

The beetle roared in response. Its glowing red eyes locked onto him with unwavering focus.

Rylan suddenly stopped running.

He turned around slowly and stretched his shoulders.

"Fine."

He cracked his neck with an annoyed sigh.

"Let’s finish this."

His serpent hissed sharply as it coiled tightly around his arm. Blue energy began building along its scales. The air around it vibrated with growing power.

"Azure Fang!"

The serpent launched forward like a bolt of lightning.

It moved so quickly that its body became a streak of blue light cutting through the air.

The attack struck directly at the creature’s neck joint. The only weak point in its otherwise impenetrable armor.

CRACK.

The metal plating split open violently. The serpent drove its fangs deeper into the exposed gap. Energy exploded outward from the impact point.

The giant beetle staggered backward before collapsing onto the stone floor with a thunderous crash. Rylan dropped onto one knee, breathing heavily.

"That... was way too much work."

His serpent slowly returned to his side, curling lazily around his arm again. But before he could relax—

The labyrinth trembled once more.

Stone walls shifted. Ancient mechanisms groaned deep within the ruins.

The corridor ahead slowly opened into a new path.

Rylan frowned.

"Looks like the ruins are guiding us somewhere."

And he had a feeling he knew exactly where.

In another section of the labyrinth—

Lucien stood over a defeated challenger.

The stone floor beneath him was stained with fresh blood. His silver wolf stood calmly beside him, its icy eyes scanning the surroundings.

The challenger had been strong.

It was the same men, which he left in half dead condition. He who controlled a lightning-type beast capable of unleashing powerful electric storms.

But it hadn’t mattered.

Lucien wiped blood from his blade.

"You should have surrendered earlier."

The man lay unconscious against the wall.

His beast had already disappeared after being defeated.

Lucien sheathed his weapon and turned away.

"Let’s go."

His wolf followed silently.

As they walked away, the labyrinth shifted once more.

Paths collapsed.

Walls moved.

Entire corridors sealed themselves.

The ruins were narrowing the battlefield.

Reducing the number of challengers.

And now—

Only a few remained.

Back in the ancient hall, Aether continued forward.

But something strange was happening.

The runes across the walls flickered again.

More violently this time.

The mysterious golden energy inside Aether’s body stirred slightly.

For a brief moment—

The air inside the chamber distorted. Like heat rippling above a flame. Aether paused.

He could feel it again. The same strange presence he had sensed earlier. Someone was watching.

Not a guardian.

Not a beast.

Something deeper within the labyrinth. Something ancient. The sensation disappeared almost immediately. 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺

But Aether remained thoughtful. These ruins were far more complex than they appeared.

The deeper he went—

The stronger that hidden presence seemed to become. Beside him, the Flame Sovereign Pup looked around cautiously.

Even its instincts were reacting to the unseen watcher. But nothing appeared. Only silence answered them.

Toward the Inner Sanctum

Eventually, the corridor opened into another wide chamber. This one was larger than the previous rooms.

At its center, four stone pathways extended outward like spokes from a wheel.

Each pathway was marked with glowing symbols carved directly into the floor.

As soon as Aether stepped inside—

The runes activated.

Light surged through the chamber.

Then the deep voice of the ruins echoed once more.

"Remaining challengers detected."

"Four."

The symbols on the stone floor glowed brighter.

Aether slowly looked around the chamber.

The ruins had begun guiding the remaining challengers toward a single location. The final stage was approaching.

Soon—

All four surviving challengers would meet again.

Somewhere deeper within the labyrinth. The chamber fell silent again. But the message was clear.

Only four challengers remained.

Which meant two others had either been eliminated...

Or had been forced out of the ruins entirely.

In the Hidden Depths

Inside a sealed chamber hidden deep within the ruins...

The mysterious observer watched the floating projections quietly. The trials had done their work.

Only the strongest remained.

And among them—

One challenger stood out clearly.

Aether.

The strange golden energy surrounding him continued interfering with the ruins’ ancient systems. That energy...

It was unfamiliar.

Ancient.

And powerful.

The observer leaned slightly forward.

Its gaze lingered on Aether’s projection.

Soon the final stage of the labyrinth would begin.

The remaining challengers would gather within the Inner Sanctum.

The place where the true secret of the ruins waited.

And when that moment came—

The observer would finally see whether this challenger was truly worthy. For now, it continued watching from the shadows.
