Apocalyptic Rebirth: With a repairman system space, she rises again.-Chapter 66: Animals acting bizzare.
Chapter 66: Animals acting bizzare.
In Fortress Four, a bonfire was going in the second wall area. People from every wall gathered around the fire with their food, drinks and stories. A group of soldiers that used to to be part of the army band were playing their instruments and singing. Some people were dancing, and others were laughing.
Children had already struck new friendships, and they were chasing each other around the fire and playing other games. freewёbnoνel.com
For people that knew the world would soon change in a bad way, they were oddly relaxed and having a good time.
As it was night, Carson Warnock was outside with his sister. He had a thick jacket on, and the head covered most of his face. He was nursing a beer, listening to Willy regale a group of soldiers on the ugly details of the private life of President Finch.
He had just reached the pivotal part of the story when the first lady was about to walk in on the president and his mistress having relations on his desk while three presidents of other countries and a bishop were waiting next door.
Sister Ana Belle was not comfortable listening to this so she turned away and looked at the women closest to her that were discussing what life would be like without all the electric gadgets and the internet.
"The children seem to be loving it here. Isn’t it amazing how they are capable of adapting so quickly to change?" Sister Ana Belle commented, a wistful look crossed her eyes. She was wishing she had no worries like the little ones.
Staff sergeant Erica waved at Lyra who was introducing some girls her age to her barbie doll. "My only worry is how to keep them alive. You heard President Sunshine, the things that fly and those that travel in the ground can still reach us. Some of us have already lost enough." A pained expression settled on her face.
Her husband was a soldier, and he was one of those that had not returned from the mist. She was also on the list of soldiers called in to move to Fort Slide base for Secretary Ceasar’s mission. If Commander Grayson had not called her, she never would have known. Her daughter would probably be an orphan now, left to die in the apocalypse with no one to save her.
If she ever met Secretary Ceasar in this apocalypse, she would kill him.
Just when Sister Ana was about to offer words of comfort, she froze. Her back going tense as the haunting calls of animals echoed from the forested mountain. Everyone at the bon fire heard them and they all tensed up and quieted down.
"We all had better get inside." Major Elio motioned at Tia to follow him, lifting Mickey into his arms. "Inside everyone, get inside." He barked.
Parents grabbed their children and started to run, returning to their houses. Soldiers did not hide; after securing their loved ones, most opted to stand in the entrances of their doors, outside.
Major Elio and others grabbed knives as guns had been confiscated.
"Dammit." he cursed. Tomorrow, he would ask for permission or something to be allowed to carry a weapon. They needed to be able to protect themselves in emergencies.
A series of urgent chimes rung, signaling the beginning of curfew. They were not necessary really because the scared humans at Fortress Four were already disappearing into their houses.
Inside a group of interconnected cargo containers which had been fashioned into a workshop-lab combo, Sunshine had busied herself with repairing more weather absorbent under suits.
She had ordered for more damaged, discarded fixable suits as they were the perfect armor for venturing into the mist. Sunshine was not working alone; she had a team of their most trusted members helping her.
"Suni! Suni!" Lisha rushed in, voice raw with panic.
With a jolt, Sunshine stood up, sensing that something had unsettled Lisha. Those working stopped, their attention as well suddenly diverted.
"Has the apocalypse star...started?" Owen asked, his fingers trembling so much that the micro stitching needle fell from his hands.
Sunshine motioned for them all to calm down. "No Owen, now get back to work." She tugged Lisha and pulled her to the furthest corner, away from prying ears. "This better be good, didn’t I say not to send people into a frenzy with your energizer bunny like energy?" She spoke through thinning lips.
"Oh it is that good or bad. You remember that you told me to keep my eye on the all social media apps for any strange complaints from people?" Lisha paused, a smile not leaving her lips.
"Aha?" Sunshine’s brow rose quizzically.
"Well..." Lisha switched on the tablet, scrolling through video clips of individuals describing their pet’s sudden hostility. "Look at this, one said that her peaceful Maltese dog which is very gentle bit off her nose as she was trying to give it a kiss." A fit of giggles overtook Lisha while flipping through short videos of the pup in full chaos mode. "I don’t think people should be kissing dogs."
Nimo pulled up behind them. "Perhaps it was tired of making social media content unwillingly. That is what I would have thought had I not seen Dash sitting still and staring at the sky like he is waiting for something dreadful to arrive. All the other dogs on the base are behaving the same way.
The animals in the forest are howling, screeching or anything...they are doing it chaotically. The comms officers say that there is a stampede in the forest, but the animals are not escaping, they are moving in circles or something.
We have reports of cats on the base staring outside windows and growling at the sky. Someone from the animal husbandry sector has sent in a report of cattle all turning to face north.
The reports were strange, but they were living in strange times.
"This is not surprising." Sunshine said, "The meteorites are about to arrive. Even the animals can sense the change in the air, I think what we have been waiting for is actually on the horizon." Sunshine explained.
"Well, there are others like farmers complaining that chickens are not laying eggs, the fishermen are claiming that fish are floating on water, and they are not dead.
Someone took a picture of sparrows perched on a telephone wire in the morning and they were not singing. Apparently even roaches are biting people now, insects have multiplied in number, and they move in groups and strange formations." Lisha continued to report her findings online.
Nimo took a deep sigh. "Are we safe with our domestic animals in here? What if a goat chews off a child’s arm? I saw a few kids feeding them in the paddocks, including your children Suni."
"The children should stop playing with all animals for now. But like I said, this only confirms that the apocalypse has already started." Sunshine tapped on a video that caught her interest.
In the video, a woman stood solely in a train full of thick white smoke like mist. Everyone else was dead including the child in her arms.
"Is that what I think it is?" Nimo asked Sunshine.
