Chapter 634: Blind spots and accusations.

Meanwhile, in Kingsbridge near the Ferry Island border, Vicente jumped into his truck and slammed the door. The engine roared to life as he drove down the dusty road toward the edge of the borderland. "War already..." he muttered. "It came much sooner than I expected." He was torn between how to feel about it.

On one hand, he was hoping for the downfall of the Quinn’s. On the other hand, after witnessing the Arcladons and what they could do, he wanted the Quinn’s round. Who else was going to provide the weapons that would protect them from this insane apocalypse.

And it was insane because the creatures popping out of nowhere were things of nightmares. First it was flying snakes, then horses with more heads and legs than they needed and now dragons!

"This world has gone to shit." He muttered, pressing on the gas.

The border line between Kingsbridge and Ferry Island wasn’t far away, and Vicente knew the terrain better than anyone. He parked his truck on a small hill that overlooked the crossing road. He grabbed his binoculars like he usually did and stepped out.

The wind was strong, carrying the smell of rotting bodies and sickness from the distant river water. Ferry Island looked quiet from afar, but Vicente knew better. Trouble always liked to hide behind that silence.

It was amazing that people were still willing to live in that hell hole. What were they waiting for to get out like he had done? Fortress four had other clean towns. Mist free towns! Why couldn’t people abandon Ferry Island and leave it to rot?

He lifted the binoculars and scanned the distant buildings. "Alright," he murmured. "Let’s see what you idiots are planning."

The stimulation training he had gone through over the past months had sharpened his senses. The Prime Core fueled thermal band wrapped around his arm amplified strange connection he had with the Mist.

Vicente stretched his fingers slowly. The air around him began to thicken. A pale grey fog started forming along the border road. It curled like living smoke, spreading across the land until it formed a silent wall between Kingsbridge and Ferry Island.

Anyone that dared to cross over without his permission was in for a nightmare.

Vicente watched it grow and chuckled. "My powers have grown! Let’s make this interesting." He opened his mouth, breathing poison into the mist.

Then, he leaned against his truck and continued watching through the tablet that was connected to the drones. He unwrapped an ice cream bar and grinned. "Let me see how you bastards survive what’s coming."

A chilling laugh escaped him as the Mist thickened across the border like a sleeping monster waiting to wake up.

The command center at the mountain base was once again in a state of disturbance. Normally, you could only hear the soft hum of the computers and the sound of fingers tapping on keyboards. But today, the room felt like a bomb about to go off. Everyone was stressed, and the air was thick with tension.

Some of the people there had not had the opportunity to rest or change since yesterday.

Sunshine stood at the head of the tactical table, her earlier plans to rest officially buried under a mountain of crisis. On the massive wall monitors, the map of Ferry Island flickered with data sent back by insect drones.

Warren leaned over the console; his face flushed with a mix of exhaustion and rising temper. He glared at the screen, then turned his gaze toward Lisha.

"Okay, I’ll be the one to say it," He snapped, throwing his hands up. "How did we miss this? We have drones the size of houseflies and sensors that can hear a cat sneeze from three miles away. How did an entire group of mercenaries walk into Ferry Island in real time without a single red light flashing on your board, Lisha?"

Lisha didn’t look up from her monitors, but the set of her jaw told everyone she was about three seconds away from throwing her headset at him. She had been controlling drones and monitoring pings for eighteen hours straight, and her patience was thinner than a piece of parchment. 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖

"For the last time, you moron," Lisha sighed, her voice dripping with practiced annoyance, "we do not actually have ’eyes’ in Ferry Island_ not really. Not the way you think and not like here."

Warren opened his mouth to argue, but Lisha cut him off with a sharp gesture toward the map.

"Our surveillance teams_ the humans, remember them? They were supposed to plant the permanent deep-grid sensors yesterday. But they were a little busy not dying during the Arcladon attack. None of our soldiers wants to live in that town full time. The superhumans were a little busy when the alarms went off. Every spare hand was ordered to move to the hot bases to pull people out of burning buildings and save the wounded."

She swiped her hand across a tablet, pulling up a grainy aerial view. "Look at the northern border. It’s right near the natural mist corridor. That place is a total dead zone. Between the atmospheric interference and the lack of ground relays, the drones can’t catch a signal. It’s completely blind."

Sunshine felt a cold knot form in her stomach. She leaned forward, her eyes narrowing as she studied the dark patch on the map where the data simply stopped.

"The northern border," Sunshine whispered, her voice sending a chill through the room. "The question isn’t just that they entered through a blind spot, Lisha. The question is... how did they know it was a blind spot? We are the only ones who had the updated sensor maps."

The room went deathly quiet. The hum of the cooling fans suddenly seemed incredibly loud.

"And the members of the elite squad," Warren added, his voice low and dangerous.

The silence stretched. Everyone in the room_ technicians, guards, and tacticians_ exchanged quick, nervous glances. The implication hung in the air like heavy smoke. For the mercenaries to hit that specific gap at that specific time meant someone had told them where to pass.

Had one of their own sold them out? No one dared say the word ’traitor’ out loud, but it was written on every face in the room.

"Where are our teams in the town?" Sunshine asked, breaking the tension. "The squad and surveillance team?"

Lisha’s fingers flew across the keyboard, pulling up the radio frequency stats. She bit her lip, her bravado fading into something more somber. "Communications are down. Across the board."

"Down?" Sunshine repeated. "Since when?"

"The last check-in was yesterday at 3 a.m.," Lisha admitted, looking smaller in her chair. "They reported that Ferry Island was stable, we called back some of the squad members to help in repairing the damaged spots in other areas. Ferry Island was secure.....no one knew Luca would act so fast."
