Chapter 70: New Biomes

The blue-skinned giant with swollen muscles and too-long-arms trudged further down the abandoned street. His heavy foot made a slight shudder.

Empty cars, rusted and half-crushed, lined the road. Windows in the tall buildings on either side gaped, glass shattered, curtains fluttering faintly in the stale breeze. 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚

He paused at an intersection.

His dull yellow eyes scanned left and right.

Not a sound came, not even the distant cry of a bird or the scurry of rats. The city felt so empty and it annoyed him.

His nostrils flared.

The stench of ash and metal filled his lungs but no scent of prey that he could play with.

The giant’s lip curled, exposing jagged teeth.

His hand twitched as if itching to tear something apart just to break the boring monotony.

He leaned down and ripped a stop sign from the ground, concrete scattering as he raised it like a makeshift club across his shoulder.

In the distance, beyond the haze, faint vibrations whispered through the earth.

There was a flicker of movement darting across rooftops that caught his eye.

His ears perked.

A slow grin spread across his face.

Finally.

Something was out there.

He started forward again, following the tremors. His steps was like drum in the hollow city.

The deeper he walked, the closer he drew to the heart of where the scavengers or maybe monsters once gathered.

He lumbered past the empty shops.

The flicker of movement grew sharper now. He could hear them with his enhanced senses.

Faint voices carried on the wind, hushed and nervous, it was the kind of tone these humans used when they saw him coming.

He slowed his pace and pressed his bulk against the corner of a crumbling building. His yellow eyes narrowed as he peered through the dust and broken stone.

There, in the shell of a collapsed supermarket, four people crouched among the ruins.

They scavenged quietly and rummaged through old shelves and overturned crates, stuffing cans and scraps of dried food into bags.

Their faces were gaunt.

The giant’s grin widened. It was a shame that they can’t eat another human, otherwise they will not be struggling with food.

He stepped forward, heavy footsteps echoing down the hollow street. The scavengers froze.

Their heads snapped toward the sound and panic filling their eyes as the massive figure emerged.

They saw his huge body with pale blue skin stretched tight over rippling muscle and the jagged teeth gleaming behind that crooked grin.

But what froze them even more was not his appearance. It was his voice.

"Hey you all, little human," the giant rumbled, his tone hoarse and deep but still clear. "You all look like rats right now. Hahaha."

The youngest of the group gasped. Monsters weren’t supposed to speak!

The giant tilted his head, amused by the fear twisting their expressions.

"You scared?" he said, lips curling. "I like it better when you all... understand what I am."

The scavengers stumbled backward, weapons raised.

One of them had a short knife, another clutched a wooden staff wrapped in cloth.

Some who had skills also started letting out faint glows of skills that flickered in their hands, but their arms trembled too much to steady them.

Their levels were too low and their fear was higher than their strength.

Suddenly, the giant moved with sudden speed, slamming the stop sign into the cracked floor.

The impact sent shockwaves through the supermarket, scattering debris and knocking one scavenger to the ground.

Before the man could rise a massive foot came down, crushing him into a burst of blood and bone.

"AAAAAA!!!"

The others screamed.

A fireball flickered from the hand of one scavenger, hitting the giant’s chest and exploding with a dull thud.

Smoke and cinders rose, but the giant only laughed, brushing the ash from his skin.

"This one is weak, not like what that mad threw at me before," he growled, swatting the man aside with one swing of his makeshift club.

The body hit the wall and his bones snapped on impact.

The remaining two tried to run with desperation.

The giant’s hand shot out, his massive fingers curling around one of them.

The scavenger screamed and thrashing but the sound cut off when jagged teeth sank into her flesh.

Blood ran down the giant’s chin as he tore into his prey. He then chewed slowly, savoring the taste.

The last survivor froze in terror, his knife slipping from his hands. He couldn’t move or breathe. He only watched as the giant’s glowing eyes locked onto him.

The grin widened again.

"You’re next."

The giant dashed, and in a matter of seconds the man already became another corpse.

The giant wiped the blood from his chin with the back of his hand, smearing crimson across his pale blue skin.

He looked down at the mangled corpses and let out a low chuckle that rumbled deep in his chest.

"This is quite fun," he muttered with satisfaction. "Back when I was just a man, everyone laughed at me because of my ugly face and misshapen body."

His jagged teeth showed as his grin widened. His dull yellow eyes gleamed with a cruel light.

"But now they scream and tremble just by seeing me. I think conquering them by fear isn’t so bad either. Plus, there’s no cop to arrest me. Hehehe."

He glanced at the bodies again. His thoughts lingered for a moment, and then his gaze darkened.

"Hmm... I should not kill the woman yet," he muttered, voice sinking into something dark in his mind.

The giant’s laughter rolled as he turned and lumbered away, dragging his makeshift club behind him. He was looking for new prey.

Meanwhile, inside the Ether Rift, Myles and the group pressed onward, still locked in their hunt for more Ether Shards.

The warped tunnels of mist curled endlessly around them, whispering with faint echoes of more things.

Shadows shifted at the edges, shapes darting and fading before their eyes could adjust. Myles already told them what was on his mind, these were new kinds of monsters.

Myles led the way. Their movements had grown sharper and their senses became keener after their recent level-ups.

Then they stopped, in front of them there were new kinds of biomes. This one was filled with roots and tendrils of something organic.
