Apocalypse: Reborn with a Soul Sync Farming Space System-Chapter 57 Wrong Timeline?
The dagger had a white sheath, and a white hilt.
The dagger had followed Ling Xuan when she transmigrated from the Chinese dynasty to Laurel’s body.
And it had been with her since she was little, a piece she never thought she would ever give away.
Tina unwrapped one hand from the teddy bear and slowly traced the intricate design on the sheath. "Aunty Laurel, this is so cool." She praised with sparkly eyes.
"This is the gift I brought you." Ling Xuan said, placing the dagger in Tina’s hand.
"I love it!" Tina exclaimed, but the next second she quickly shut her mouth and leaned closer to Ling Xuan’s ear.
"I thought kids were not allowed to play with sharp objects." She asked, curiously staring at Ling Xuan.
Ling Xuan’s lips tugged up slightly. Tina was smart, and she liked it. If it were back in her time, she would have taken her as her next successor.
"You are an exception, you are smart enough not to use it wrongly." Ling Xuan paused. "It’s for your protection." She added.
"Thank you, Aunty Laurel." She hugged Ling Xuan.
’Okay, now she is doing too much.’ Ling Xuan thought inwardly as she poked her index finger against Tina’s forehead pushing her back.
Tina beamed with joy, completely unbothered by Ling Xuan’s dissociative attitude. "I’ll make sure no one sees it." She whispered to Ling Xuan, before taking off to her room, giggling.
Ling Xuan’s gaze followed her little form until she disappeared from her view.
...
Days had gone by before the blink of an eye. The Severance cult had begun harbouring people in the name of saving them. Meanwhile, Enzo and his men had moved to another hideout which was closer to the valley as ordered by Ling Xuan.
News channels spoke endlessly about the abnormal temperatures, though their reassurances were growing less convincing with each broadcast.
Experts called it a temporary climate anomaly, urging citizens to remain calm while advising them to store water and avoid unnecessary travel.
But calm was becoming harder to maintain.
Across the city, supermarket shelves began emptying faster than they could be restocked. Long queues formed outside convenience stores before sunrise, and arguments broke out over things as trivial as bottled water and portable fans.
Fear was spreading across the city.
The price of fuel, food, and water rocketed high. Food was becoming scarce and expensive as all the farmlands in the country were destroyed by the extreme heat wave.
There was no difference between the hospital and the mortuary as people passed away at a relatively high rate that the country had never experienced before.
The city had erupted in an uproar, as many residents had resorted to stealing food from supermarkets and factories. While the faction that ended up listening to the Severance cult handed all their resources to the cult, and the ones who didn’t have any resources also resorted to stealing, as they believed it was the only way to secure their place in the promised haven.
Laurel watched the news. The streets which were once lively with nice people, were now filled with aggressive people, their eyes held no more hope for the future.
A heavy silence settled around her as the reporter’s voice continued to drone on, listing numbers that no longer felt like statistics but quiet confirmations of the future she already knew.
The heatstroke cases had tripled, and water rationing had begun in neighboring cities.
Several reservoirs were already nearing critical levels.
Laurel lowered the volume until the voice faded into a distant murmur. She did not need the television to tell her what was happening. The signs were unfolding exactly as they had before, neither faster nor slower... just as merciless.
For a brief moment, guilt stirred in her chest.
She was preparing while countless others remained unaware, clinging to the fragile belief that the government would fix everything.
She let out a deep sigh, today would be the end of the heat wave. The people would soon have water, but the first rainfall was scalding, and many wouldn’t realize it until it was too late.
Then... shivers ran down her spine at the thought of what was coming... the meteor shower.
The walls around the valley had been completed and a few of the houses had also been completed, it was now time for her to relocate to the fortress.
Alexander had sold off the Waynes’ properties in the last couple of days. All that remained was just the mansion and a couple of pieces of land.
Her mind drifted to Chris Lennox. He had also sold everything he had, the news of the extreme heat and people dying covered up the big news of the number one business organization in the country going bankrupt.
The rumbling sound in the sky snapped her out of her thoughts. A frown creased her brows. Her eyes glanced at the wall clock in her room, and it was 7:00 in the morning. The rain wasn’t supposed to start now, but later in the evening.
Laurel hurried up to the window, she drew the curtains to one side, to her biggest surprise the clouds were dark and grey. Rumbles echoed again as lightning flashed across the cloud.
She bit her inner cheeks, was her memory wrong? No, they weren’t. How could the timeline change? Even though it was just a difference of a few hours, it made her realise that anything could happen, and if care was not taken, things could easily spin out of control.
Her thoughts trailed off when the first drop of rain landed on the earth. The earth swallowed it instantly, then it began to drizzle, although the water didn’t boil as it touched the earth, vapour rose to the sky.
Then, the rain began to pour down heavily.
The people’s cry of happiness on the news drew her attention back to the TV. However, the cry of joy suddenly turned to the one of horror, as the water temperature was too hot to bear.
The people began to run to hide in any shelters they could find. The camera moved around abruptly before falling to the ground. Only the footsteps of people running were now visible on the TV.
