Apocalypse: Reborn with a Soul Sync Farming Space System-Chapter 44 Survival of the Fittest
"Who the hell are the severance cult? And how do they know about the disaster coming?" Alexander paused as if he were asking the wrong questions. "I thought you were the only one aware of the apocalypse." He whispered.
Laurel stood up, her gaze locking with Alexander’s questioning gaze. "I guess I’m not the only one who is aware of it." She said, keeping the information about Camile. She was not sure if she could trust him.
"Do you think they mean what they said?" Alexander asked.
"Do you believe their words?" Laurel asked with a little frown.
Alexander shook his head. "As a businessman, I know not to believe such public statements. It means one of two things, either they are naive and have good intentions, or they have hidden agendas. I doubt it is the first one."
"Exactly, publicly announcing it will cause panic among the people, because right now they are like a drowning man grasping at straws.
The cult is recruiting people in the name of safety, meanwhile, it is to get them to bring more resources, and to become expendable baits during the apocalypse." Laurel’s hands tightened at her side.
It was exactly what they did in the previous apocalypse.
"No... not only that. They are fishing for talent." Her eyes widened as realisation dawned on her.
"Talents?"
"Yes, special talents. With the disaster came a blessing. Whether we can call it a blessing I don’t really know. During that period, some humans will awaken special abilities to survive during that time.
However, it was not everyone who got these talents. By getting more people to join them, they naturally get those with abilities on their side." Laurel shook her head, the stakes just went up.
"And if they happen to save them, the people would be grateful and loyal, willing to become the cult’s weapon," Alexander added.
Laurel was deep in thought. "Mr. Wayne..."
"Call me Alex." Alexander cut in, his eyes hoping she would comply.
"The workers building the walls can make sure they keep their mouths shut... if news of us building a fortress spreads, we will easily become targets... The enemy is in the dark and we are in the light. We are at a disadvantage." Laurel said, ignoring his request.
"You don’t have to worry, they already signed a contract to keep it a secret. They won’t speak of it to anyone." Alexander replied.
He didn’t know why Laurel was anxious, it was not like they had any contact with severance before, and it wouldn’t be that quick for the cult to target them.
Meanwhile, Laurel had a knot forming in her chest. ’Camile,’ she thought bitterly.
"Just make sure to talk to them again, and tell them not to be afraid," Laurel said before walking to her room.
The moment she entered her room. She locked the door, and in the next second, she disappeared into her space.
"Ling Xuan." She called out.
Ling Xuan who was admiring her collection of swords and crossbows, grimaced at the sudden disturbance.
"Chris is really something. These weapons are fine, I can see he has exquisite taste." Ling Xuan said as she ran her fingers along the battle axe. It seemed like she had found her next favourite weapon.
"There is trouble, Ling Xuan," Laurel said anxiously as she approached her.
"Trouble?" Ling Xuan asked without looking away from the weapons.
"Camile and the Severance cult are causing panic among the people, and they are trying to harbor them."
"So?" Ling Xuan arched her brows, even though she knew what Laurel’s worries were.
"In the apocalypse, there will be people with awakened powers. If they get those people, Ling Xuan, we will have no chance to fight against them." Laurel said, her chest heaving.
Ling Xuan did not answer immediately, her fingers resting idly against the cold metal.
Laurel, seeing her quietness, continued. "That means we have no chance to survive in the apocalypse. Imagine if they have everyone under them, they will be unstoppable."
"Is that what you are worried about?" Ling Xuan asked, retracting her hand to herself.
Laurel paused, taken aback by her question. "Yes."
"Have you thought it through, if he saved the people, the people get another day to live and if he doesn’t, they will perish?" Ling Xuan asked with a calculating smile.
Laurel paused. "But it will only make the apocalypse harder for us."
"Do you want us to kill them and eliminate future threats?" Ling Xuan asked coldly.
"No."
"Do you want to save them?" Ling Xuan asked again.
Laurel paused, her gaze lowering. Her fingers twitched by her side. She does want to save them.
"Why are you asking me all these questions?" Laurel’s gaze met hers.
"Because I want you to realize we are in no position to save the people." Ling Xuan paused, studying her expression. "If we are going to take people into our base, they have to be useful, there is no room for weak people."
"Ling Xuan..."
"This is survival of the fittest." Ling Xuan cut in.
"I see your concern. That is why we can not allow Severance to recruit people." She added coldly.
Laurel’s fist tightened by her side. She closed her eyes in defeat.
"How can we stop them from recruiting people?" Laurel asked dejectedly.
She wondered if it was right for them to take the people’s hope from them. But on the other side, would they survive? They will either become raiders or monster food. 𝓯𝙧𝓮𝓮𝒘𝓮𝙗𝙣𝒐𝒗𝒆𝓵.𝓬𝓸𝒎
"That is very easy." Ling Xuan walked to her desk, and she sat down with an aloof expression. "In war, the most effective way to win is to cut off the supplies of the enemy."
"So you mean we should find their base, and destroy it?" Laurel asked.
"We only resort to that when we can’t move their supplies." Ling Xuan replied.
Laurel nodded, her eyes blinking from guilt. ’They would still die even if they are saved. Maybe in this way, it is more merciful.’ she thought inwardly, even when her heart clenched bitterly in denial.
"I’ll contact someone. I believe he would be able to find their hideout." Laurel said, her voice cracking.
