Chapter 37: Chapter 37 Throw Her Out

Dylan stood quietly to the side, already waiting for Chris’s next command.

Chris’s eyes narrowed slightly. "Call the procurement team."

"Yes, sir."

"I want fuel first," Chris said. "Diesel, petrol, gas canisters, all of it. If the power grid collapses, generators will be priceless."

Dylan nodded, typing quickly into his tablet.

Chris walked toward the glass wall of his office and stared at the city. The cars were still moving along the streets, and people were still walking as if the extreme weather conditions were just minor.

Dylan paused. "And the mansion on the mountain?"

"Reinforce it," Chris replied. "Get a bigger basement dug if needed. I want a medical room, a storage room, and a tower for security. Install solar panels, and buy extra batteries. We need independent power, and purchase all the ammunition you can get."

"Yes, sir." Dylan’s face remained calm, but deep down he felt his chest tighten. This began with just a little bit of belief, but the situation was turning critical, and he didn’t know how to thank Laurel for the heads-up.

Chris turned back toward his desk. "Also, buy cooling systems."

"Cooling systems?" Dylan blinked in confusion.

"Industrial ones," Chris corrected. "The type used in warehouses. When the heat gets worse, normal air conditioners won’t be enough."

Dylan nodded his head, typing again on his tablet.

"And start selling the shares, and everything owned by the Lennox family... Except for lands in mountain areas." Chris added, his jaws tightened.

Dylan nodded slowly. He had no reason to tell Chris otherwise, after all he too had seen the heat wave... and it was far from natural.

Chris tucked his hands in his pocket, his expression remained aloof. "Any update on Camile?"

Dylan’s expression darkened slightly. "Yes."

Chris’s eyes sharpened. "Speak."

"She met with the Severance group again last night," Dylan said. "They were transferring goods from their warehouse into a refrigerated truck which was heading towards the mountain region of the country."

"Refrigerated truck?" Chris creased his brows.

"Yes," Dylan confirmed. "And... there were weapons too, both for long distance and short ones."

Chris chuckled. "Did you manage to find their base? He asked.

"Yes, boss. Their base is in the northern village, home to locals. Their base is heavily protected but isn’t fortified by walls yet." Dylan replied.

Chris smirked, his pale face looked calm under the sunlight. "Even if it was already fortified by walls, they can’t stop me." His tone lowered. "After all, no one touches the tail of a lion and goes free." Chris paused, and a dangerous glint flickered through his eyes.

"Blow the base up." He muttered.

"Yes boss," Dylan replied with a pleased expression.

"And do it discreetly."

"As always. I’ll take my leave now."

Just as Dylan was about to leave, the door to the office snapped open with a loud commotion.

A female secretary stood behind Camile with a sorry look. "I’m sorry Mr. Lennox, I tried to stop her but she forced her way through."

Chris waved his hand without turning around, telling her to leave.

The secretary quickly lowered her head before walking back to her position.

Camile’s expression was one of anger and hurt. "How could you do this to me, Chris. We promised to be there for each other, for better or worse." She broke into tears.

"You blocked the card you gifted to me and not only that you won’t even pick up my calls..."

"We are done." Chris cut in sharply, not sparing her a glance.

"Y-You are breaking up with me? What do you mean we are done?" She stammered. Camile’s eyes widened in disbelief. In her past life, there was no such event of Chris breaking up with her.

Why were things different now? He must be joking right? or... or maybe it was a prank. She thought to herself.

"Chris, are you mad at me? Did I do something to annoy you? I’m sorry, okay, let’s talk about it, you don’t have to make such a drastic decision." She tried to coax him.

After all, Chris always complied with any request she made, whenever she acted petrified. A small smirk curved on her lips before disappearing as her tears trickled down her cheeks.

If it was not because of his wealth and influence, why would she be sucking up to a half-dead man? The only man of her dream was Alexander Wayne, she only needed to become Mrs. Lennox, to gift the wealth of the Lennox family to Alexander.

That not only made them strong, but also the strongest couple in the apocalypse. After she was done with Chris, she would get rid of Laurel. 𝓯𝙧𝓮𝓮𝒘𝓮𝙗𝙣𝒐𝒗𝒆𝓵.𝓬𝓸𝒎

"Throw her out," Chris commanded in a cold voice that sent shivers down her spine.

"Wait... wait what do you mean?" Camile yelled as Dylan suddenly grabbed her by the arms, pulling her towards the door.

Camile’s eyes widened with fear, if she can’t get Chris to take her back, the Severance group may easily discard her. She couldn’t afford to lose everything she had worked so hard to build.

"Chris stop, please, stop. Remember I love you and I accepted your proposal even knowing you might die soon..." Chris didn’t utter a word.

Becoming more frantic. "I’m pregnant!" She yelled.

Dylan stopped, turning to Chris. His eyes hardened, as he knew this was Chris’s soft spot. Having an heir that will continue the Lennox’s bloodline, he knew there was no one Chris could bear to throw her out.

"Throw her out. Take everything I had given her, her house, car... everything." Chris replied coldly.

Dylan paused for a moment, wondering if he just heard right.

"What are you waiting for?" Chris glanced over his shoulder.

Camile was stunned, this time it was real tears falling down her cheeks. "Chris you can’t do this to me! You can’t leave me on the street... Chris... Chris!"

She yelled, her voice becoming more distant. The door to the office snapped shut, swallowing her voice with it.

Chris let out a sigh. "Pregnant?" He scoffed. He had not even neared her for the last six months.

.....

(Wayne Mansion)

Laurel sat in front of her desk, her finger pressing the bottom of the pen. Click. Click. Click. The sound was the only noise in the silent room.

She stared at her list. Although she had secured the defence plan. She still felt like a lot of things were missing.

And the temperature wasn’t helping her situation in any way. She couldn’t farm under such extreme heat unless she wanted to visit the land of her ancestors.

"What should I do?" She muttered.
