Chapter 155: Chapter 155 Infected or Zombies?

"The infected?" Benjamin repeated.

His eyes widened the moment his mind wandered back to that night.

He turned to Camile. "The infected...are more dangerous than we had thought..." he shook his head, pushing down the tightness in his chest. "The people bitten or killed by them ended up as infected..." Benjamin started breathing faster, his heart racing in his chest.

"Maybe you have it wrong, if the red mist gets into their wounds they become infected, I don’t believe they can turn another person through their bites," Camile muttered under her breath.

The events of that night circled through his mind, he remembered turning around in the battle, and his eyes widening in horror as the dead soldiers began rising again.

...

"Benjamin, fall back." Scott’s voice pulled him out of his trance.

He backed away quickly, firing bullets at them. "Scott, what the hell is happening? Are these things zombies?!"

"I don’t care what they are, just f**king shoot them down!" Scott shouted as he opened fire.

"Everyone fall back!" The captain of the squad ordered.

"Everyone fall back!" Another soldier shouted so everyone heard the order.

The soldiers began backing away, shooting at the infected to keep their distance.

The soldiers who had risen up again from the dead were a little slower compared to the ones that were infected by the red mist.

"I can’t believe I lived to the extent of experiencing a real zombie apocalypse..." He corked his rifle again. "But it is so fun killing them!" Benjamin shouted as he opened fire again.

The remaining squad moved closer to the gate. One of them turned around banging on it. "Open the gate! Open the gate!" His voice tore through the air with panic and urgency.

The man pounded harder against the metal gate again, his fists slamming against it again and again as his voice rose with desperation. "Open the gate! Open the gate!" he shouted, his voice cracking under pressure, but no matter how hard he hit it, the gate remained tightly shut as if no one was on the other side.

"They are not opening it!" one of the soldiers yelled, his voice filled with disbelief as he turned around, his face paling when he saw the infected closing in on them.

Scott’s jaw tightened as his grip on his gun firmed. "Then we don’t wait for them," he said coldly, lifting his weapon again. "We defend ourselves."

Gunshots rang out immediately, the squad firing without holding back as bullets tore through the infected, but it barely made a difference as more kept coming, crawling from the ground, rushing from the darkness, their numbers increasing instead of decreasing.

"They keep coming! What the hell is this!" another soldier shouted, his voice shaking as he fired continuously.

Benjamin clenched his teeth as he pulled the trigger again and again, his hands moving on instinct as he shot at anything that moved. "This is insane! They are not stopping!" he shouted, his eyes darting across the battlefield as panic slowly crept into his chest.

Time seemed to blur as the fight dragged on, and slowly the sharp sounds of gunfire began to reduce, replaced by hollow clicks that echoed louder than any scream.

"I’m out of ammo!" someone shouted.

"Me too!"

Benjamin pulled the trigger again, but nothing came out. He froze for a split second, staring at his gun before letting out a curse. "Damn it!" He threw it aside and reached for the blade at his waist.

"Switch to close combat!" Scott ordered as he drew his weapon, stepping forward without hesitation.

The clash became immediate and brutal as blades sliced through the infected’s flesh, the soldiers swinging desperately while the infected lunged at them, their mouths snapping and hands clawing without fear or hesitation.

Benjamin slashed at one infected, severing its head from its body, before pushing it back, but another rushed at him from the side, its mouth wide open as it aimed straight for his neck.

His eyes widened as his body froze for a split second.

"Benjamin!" Scott shouted as he rushed forward, slamming his blade into the infected’s forehead and knocking it away before grabbing Benjamin’s arm and pulling him back.

"Are you trying to die?" Scott snapped, his breathing heavy as he pushed him aside.

Benjamin swallowed hard, his chest rising and falling rapidly. "I... I almost..." he muttered, his voice shaking as he gripped his blade tighter.

"There is no time to panic, keep moving!" Scott barked before turning back into the fight.

The situation quickly spiraled out of control as more infected swarmed in, surrounding them from all directions, forcing the remaining soldiers closer and closer to the gate.

One soldier was dragged down, his scream cutting through the chaos before it abruptly stopped.

Another stumbled, an infected biting into his arm as he cried out in pain before collapsing to the ground.

"Hold them back!" the captain shouted, but his voice was drowned out by the chaos and the growls of the infected.

Benjamin’s arms grew heavier with each swing, his breathing becoming more labored as exhaustion crept into his body.

"Scott!" he shouted, turning toward him just in time to see him being forced back, his steps unsteady as several infected lunged at him at once.

"Stay back!" Scott shouted, trying to push them away, but there were too many.

In the next second, he lost his footing and fell, his body disappearing beneath the swarm of infected as they piled over him.

"Scott!" Benjamin rushed forward, slashing wildly as he tried to reach him, but the infected blocked his path, their bodies pressing against him, forcing him back no matter how hard he tried.

"Move! Get away from him!" Benjamin shouted, his voice hoarse as desperation filled his chest.

But no matter how much he fought, he couldn’t reach him.

His movements slowed, his strength fading as the realization slowly sank in.

This was the end.

His eyes locked onto Scott’s for a brief moment through the swarm.

Neither of them spoke. But they understood...They were not getting out of this alive.

Just then, a loud sound echoed behind them as the gate began to open.

Benjamin’s eyes widened slightly as hope flickered for a split second, but before he could react, something slammed into him from the side, sending him crashing to the ground.

The infected swarmed over him immediately, their fists and bodies hitting him repeatedly as he struggled to push them away.

Pain shot through his body as his vision blurred, his strength leaving him with every passing second.

And then everything went dark.
