Chapter 432: The War for Antarctica (2)

Cass floated above the walls of Tolearth, a mid-sized city-state, containing 16 million residents.

Her long, purple hair, defying the winds, gently danced around the Succubus. Her dark purple bat-like wings beat the air, even though she could easily float without them.

Below her, the Antarctican forces stood on the tall walls. Thousands of Evolved, wearing full war-gear, ready for the upcoming battle.

Behind the walls, the regular soldiers prepared the heavy artilleries to bombard the enemy.

Cass could see the nervousness in the soldiers’ stance. None of them wanted to be there, fighting against their own species. However, they would happily give their lives to save their loved ones.

"Isn’t this the age-old story? One army goes to war, carrying the hopes and dreams of their people, the other marches to war for the exact same reason. Neither wants to kill each other, yet their own people tied their hands by placing their faith on the soldiers’ shoulders!"

The Succubus glanced to the man standing atop an illusory platform. He wasn’t the tallest, most muscular or particularly handsome, yet he somehow managed to steal Cass’s heart long ago.

"What do you think, my love? Is this war really necessary? Can’t we find a better solution to our problems than killing millions for no reason?"

David’s snake-like purple eyes scanned the horizon, waiting for the enemy to arrive. However, upon hearing his lover’s question, he glanced to the side.

His heart skipped a beat, just from gazing into her alluring pink eyes. Her entire body was perfect and desirable by any human, yet for David, only those bewitching eyes mattered. He couldn’t help but smile upon gazing into their depth.

However, as he understood the question, the smile instantly disappeared from his face. He turned back towards the horizon with a tiny frown and, after a sad sigh, he answered.

"Wars are never necessary. They happen because one side wants something that couldn’t be achieved through diplomacy. It’s the ultimate failure of humanity, when greed overpowers logic, rationality and morality!"

Another pair of wingbeats arrived as Leslie flew next to them. A scale-like pure black armor covered his body, while tongues of flames danced around his wings.

Sarah simply floated next to him, standing on hardened air. Her bluish-gray hair didn’t move, even though the wind could easily reach unbearable levels so high in the sky.

The storm-like woman gazed towards the empty, dark horizon with both anger and sadness. She barely spoken a word after hearing about her elder brothers’ betrayal.

Some people, mostly Henry and David, wanted to question her, but after seeing the obvious hatred in her stormy eyes, they didn’t need more convincing.

However, they still wanted to acquire more information, especially about Victor. For now, though, they stayed silent about their desires to know more. First, they needed to survive this battle.

"They’re here." Said Leslie in a growling, deep voice.

The others watched the horizon as well, so his warning wasn’t necessary. Lightning struck high in the sky, illuminating the approaching army. A moment later, the first of many raindrops fell, and the famous Antarctican storm finally arrived.

They were lucky enough to force the enemy into an attack before the delayed storm’s arrival. Sadly, now that the storm is here, all the electronic communication would stop working.

"We know the plan. Everyone take your positions, and let’s hope we will see the end of this eternal light... May the Goddess guide us!"

Cass grinned at her friends after saying those words. They just rolled their eyes and flew in different directions.

David was in control of the defensive forces, along with a few select generals.

Sarah was responsible for causing disturbance in the enemy forces. The stormy weather was perfect for her!

Leslie’s job was to hunt down any Evolved who’re too troublesome. He also led a small group of fast counter attackers.

The Succubus didn’t have any fancy job. Her entire purpose was keeping any and every Stellar occupied. She would preferably kill them, but that requires lots of effort and luck!

The Angelic Order’s lone Stellar flew closer to the enemy army. She didn’t try to hide herself, since that would defeat the purpose of her attack.

She barely got a kilometer away from the city-state, when suddenly a Stellar flew into the air.

Below them, the enemy army marched on. Their battle didn’t concern the Stellars. They even moved farther away, so they wouldn’t accidentally kill their own soldiers!

The Stellar looked old as he floated in the air, but his eyes also contained youthfulness. He wore the usual robe-like outfit of Asia’s culture, but he didn’t carry any weapons.

At this Rank, people only used weapons if their transformation empowered them. Otherwise, there was no use, since their claws, teeth or abilities would have more strength during combat.

The rain turned heavier around them. Every second lightning struck somewhere in the sky. The rumbling grew louder and constant, but the Stellars kept eye contact throughout the sensory overload.

A fight on their level wasn’t something people can begin without proper preparations. They needed to gauge their opponent, both their mentality and fighting prowess.

Even the slightest knowledge could provide an immeasurable advantage and grant victory.

Lightning struck nearby, and using the loud noise, Cass finally moved. Her body broke into crystals and multiplied until seven of them appeared, clad in mesmerizing crystal armor, holding five meter long crystalline greatswords.

The old Stellar also summoned his gear. Lightning seemed to strike his body, and an electric blue metallic plate armor appeared around him.

Afterward, he reached out and caught a lightning strike, which soon turned into a seven meter lance.

The lightning in the sky slowed to a crawl as the Stellars moved. The moment of reality stretched as their physical speeds entered impossible levels.

Electricity danced across his body, and while the seven Cassandras surrounded him, the old Stellar attacked.

Thunder echoed in his movements as his lance cut through the sky. With an explosion of light, he stabbed through the Cass’s crystal illusion. She broke into fragments of light and fell into the darkness below.

Another thunder resounded, followed by the explosion of lightning. However, this time Cass reacted quick enough. She raised her overly long greatsword and deflected the lance.

The old Stellar didn’t slow and instead aimed for a different crystal warrior. This Cass raised her greatsword and used its wide blade as a shield.

The lance and the Stellar’s armor glowed brightly with electricity, and suddenly his speed increased. The lance broke through the greatsword, and stabbed the illusion, exploding it into pieces of glowing crystal.

Behind him, the other five Cassandras attacked. He tried moving up and to the side, however, two still intercepted him.

A greatsword stabbed towards his head, and another pushed his lance away. He couldn’t possibly defend against two weapons simultaneously, so he attacked instead!

The lance further electrified and overloaded. With a loud explosion, lightning arced from the weapon, hitting both Succubi. Both fell to their death, breaking into illusory fragments.

Three Cassandras remained, and they attacked together, with perfect coordination, like they were all the same person!

One attacked from the front, another from left-below, while the third from right-above.

On a three-dimensional battlefield, anticipating the enemy becomes much harder, and Cass used her advantage of numbers perfectly.

The old Stellar raised his lance and stabbed towards the one below. His quick movements and sharp reflexes let him react to the maneuver with great precision.

However, he fell right into Cass’s trap. With a wide smile behind her crystalline armor, the illusion flew upward fast, and used her greatsword to push the lance off course.

It still clipped her shoulder, but the illusion didn’t fall to pieces at least. Her sacrifice also gave time for the other two to close the distance.

With a curse, the Stellar increased the electricity in his weapon, killing the fifth illusion.

Behind him, the last two attacked simultaneously. A greatsword hit his backplate, while another cut into his left leg.

The plate armor carried away most of the damage, so the greatswords only left shallow cuts, instead of severing limbs.

The old Stellar growled with anger and annoyance. Electricity danced along his body, and the eye sockets of his helmet glowed brightly, full of intense energy.

Both crystal illusions attacked the man’s chest, with a moment’s difference. The first greatsword’s tip made a minor opening in the plate armor, so the second could easily penetrate and impale the Stellar.

He cursed under his breath, then suddenly exploded into electricity, destroying the last two illusions. As the tiny fragments of light fell towards the darkness, a small chuckle escaped Cass’s lips.

The old Stellar took a deep breath as his wounds and armor both regenerated. His eyes moved towards the alluring Succubus lying on empty air.

Around them, time began moving at normal speed. The lightning in the sky turned into a flash, and rain began pelting their bodies again.

However, the light breeze didn’t last long, since the moment they stopped fighting at incredible speeds, the air surrounding them seemingly exploded. The clouds cleared, lightning bent away and raindrops shot away like bullets.

For anyone on the ground, their brief fight just looked like a bright explosion of light. As if multiple lightning strikes hit the same spot.

The thunder-like explosive sound was barely bearable, even though their fight happened dozens of kilometers away in the sky.

"Did you enjoy the warmup, old man? Let’s take this a bit seriously. It’s supposed to be a war, after all!"

The Succubus looked utterly nonchalant about their fight to the death, which further annoyed the Asian Stellar. Especially when she talked about taking things seriously!

"My name is Hu and I’m only twenty-five... I’m not an old man! But I agree it’s time to take things a step further!"

Cass’s eyes widened with surprise, but before she could’ve made any ridiculing remark, Hu, the ’old’ Stellar, flew away further into the cloudy night sky.

Not long after they separated, a loud roar shook the skies, as the lightning illuminated two gigantic beasts fighting!
