Chapter 163: Go faster

The first two days went by on the island, and nothing had happened yet. With the supplies they had, they were able to survive without issue. Riven stood outside sparring with Noel when suddenly an announcement sounded around the island—it was Quin’s voice.

("The first stage of your examination has begun. Different beasts are going to begin roaming the forest. The monsters are ranked from A all the way to F, with A being the strongest and F being the weakest.

F-ranked beasts carry ten points, with an increment of ten points for every rank higher. Gather as many points as possible; you will be graded individually and as a class.

This exam will span two days. A certain threshold has been set, and if you are lower than it, you will fail. Best of luck.")

The announcement came to an end, and immediately, growls could be heard deep inside the forest.

Riven and Noel looked at the forest. They saw beasts running around inside, and then suddenly, goblins leaped out—more than ten of them. There was a letter shining above their heads: F, glowing bright.

"That’s their ranking?" Riven asked.

"Looks like it," Noel said before lunging forward at full speed. He cut down one goblin without issue. The golden light on the goblin shifted to him after he killed it and clung to the back of his hand, showing the number ten.

Noel looked at the number. "So this is how it works then," he muttered before attacking the next one. Riven charged in. He cut down the first goblin, and without stopping, he lunged at the next and killed it.

He killed a third one, while Noel had already killed the rest and had eighty points already. The rest of the class rushed out of the cabin and saw the bodies of the goblins turning into particles of light and vanishing.

"I guess it has started already," Robert said.

"So how do we go about this? Do we spread out, or do we stay together?" Jack asked.

"Let’s spread out," Riven said and started walking toward the forest. "This exam looks like a group project, but it’s also putting us against each other.

If one of us is unable to gather the points needed to pass because he was assisting someone else, it would cause hatred. So, everyone for themselves," Riven said and walked into the forest without saying another word. freёnovelkiss.com

And his words made sense. Everyone wanted to gather as many points as possible, so having to rely on someone else or having someone else take their kills would definitely piss them off.

Lance watched Riven as he entered the forest. It was impossible to kill someone on this island, but he had an idea that would help him get rid of Riven.

He clenched his fist and bit into his lip. He chose a direction and headed that way.

Mia, Sofia, and Liana glanced at each other, then they headed in their own directions. But before they did, they made sure to lock onto where Riven went in, and also made sure their path had an angle from which they could turn and head his way when they needed to.

Each of them had their reasons for wanting to meet up with Riven ahead.

Noel also walked into the forest. The moment he got in, he started running deeper, his sword in hand as he looked for more beasts.

Whoosh.

An arrow shot out of nowhere. He turned and blocked the attack, slashing the arrow in half. He looked up, his eyes locking on the goblin that attacked him.

He lunged forward at top speed. The goblin placed an arrow on the string and, as a last means of attack, shot it, but Noel dodged to the side easily and attacked the goblin, cutting its head clean off, making his points ninety.

He turned around when he felt more presence, and he saw three goblins behind him, their teeth and claws out already to bite into his body.

"Think again," he said, leaping back and slashing. A lightning arc struck the goblins and cut them into bits.

"Riven’s blade cuts faster than mine. I have to cut faster," Noel muttered, his eyes locked on another goblin. He lunged forward again. The goblin tried to run, but it was not fast enough as the blade cut through the air and decapitated the goblin.

"Still not fast enough," he muttered, and turned around. A hobgoblin had come out and was rushing at him. It had an E on its head, which made it worth twenty points.

In the hands of the hobgoblin was a worn-out sword. It attacked with an overhead slash, but Noel parried the attack and grabbed the hobgoblin by the neck. He pulled it in and headbutted it so hard it cracked the skull.

The hobgoblin’s head swung back like the ball of a bell, disoriented, filled with pain. Noel thrust his sword right through the heart and killed it. He allowed the body to fall to the ground and turn into light.

"It’s still not fast enough. Riven’s pure strength and speed are far higher than mine. If I want to be faster, I need to use mana," he said. He raised his sword up, passed mana through his arm and into the sword, then slashed, but still, he didn’t feel it was fast enough.

He pulled back into his stance, and this time he put the mana into his arm, then turned it into pure lightning in his arm. He slashed, and the sword cut through the air very quickly.

He smiled after seeing the speed of his cut, but that happiness was short-lived as a grey wolf charged at him. It had an E on its head, but Noel could tell that it was stronger than the hobgoblin.

And to make it worse, it was not alone—several F-ranked wolves also rushed behind the first one. Noel took his stance. He closed his eyes, took a deep breath.

"Go faster," he muttered and dashed.
