Chapter 583: Chapter 126: Please Donate Your Own Money

The American public was outraged. They didn’t care whether Murdoch was a Soviet spy or an admirer of Stalin, or even if he enjoyed slaughtering Australian dogs or British workers, but there was one thing they cared about very much.

That thing was what Tommy Hawk had told them: to watch the Hollywood movies they had to pay for in theaters, rent from video stores, and subscribe to paid channels to watch, that distant Eastern nation didn’t have to spend a dime, as they could watch them for free on television.

The damn Murdoch had treated countless classic movies, including the "Star Wars" series, as his gift to them, but now the fucking Americans still had to pay a dollar, even at the cheapest second-hand movie theaters, to relive the "Star Wars" films!

Americans are just that pragmatic—if you give them a bargain, you’re definitely a good guy. But if you’re making money off Americans, screwing America’s movie stars, and then packing up the movies Americans have to pay for and giving them away for free to America’s enemies, then that’s downright enforced communism. Murdoch was blatantly some Stalin from Australia!

This time, America’s various small-time scandal and gossip tabloids finally understood why Murdoch’s The Sun made money. Following The Sun’s style, they created sensational headlines for news, pasted a few photos of actresses with exposed nipples, and put a Murdoch’s face sticker on the actresses’ breasts. Newspaper sales soared.

As more and more followers gathered, more explosive stories about the Murdoch family surfaced, and some reporters even obtained photos of Murdoch’s Estonian father-in-law serving in the Soviet navy.

Murdoch’s mansion in America and his company’s headquarters were suddenly swarmed with protesters and journalists carrying cameras, who kept vigil around the clock, hoping to capture explosive stories about the Australian. Murdoch never showed up, but instead, they captured his young wife Anna, looking serious with the kids, bodyguards, and servants as they boarded a business car and went to the airport to fly to England on a private plane.

Only then did they realize that Murdoch, who claimed to settle in America as soon as he got American citizenship, was actually living in London, England, simply sending his wife and kids there to enjoy life.

Even as his reputation in America continued to deteriorate, Murdoch did not respond. He stayed in London not because he was unshakable but, on the contrary, because he was too busy to be anywhere else. The situation required him to be physically present in London to ensure the smooth launch of Sky Television Network, his most important business battle in forty years. If he won, his channels would not only reach Australia or just England but the whole of Europe.

By that time, any European family with a TV and a receiver would be able to watch exciting programs provided by the Murdoch Group, including fantastic Hollywood movies, thrilling European sports events, and various timely news reports—and all of it would be free of charge.

If Sky Television Network quickly became widespread in Europe, then he would be the undisputed king of European media. Every European politician in need of media propaganda to gain votes would prostrate themselves before him, just like former British Prime Minister Thatcher did before.

Murdoch was in London but was not unaware of the messages coming out in American newspapers and news. He recognized his father-in-law’s photos at a glance; those very pictures had been provided by the disgraced British Labour politicians he had dealt with in the past, since BBC had used them to attack him years ago.

Furthermore, providing ammunition to Americans and stabbing him in the back without confronting him directly was definitely the style of the British.

Of course, the BBC colluded with American mediators not out of altruism but to counter Murdoch. Murdoch’s main reason for establishing the Sky Television Network was to vie with the BBC for the European satellite TV market. Tension had been building up between them for nearly two years. British Satellite Broadcasting Company had three executives resign after being attacked by scandals from Murdoch’s The Sun and News of the World. In response, the BBC ruined Murdoch’s dream of obtaining a satellite broadcasting license in England forcing him to rent a more expensive foreign commercial satellite.

Murdoch, currently unable to spare himself in London, was busy lobbying the gentlemen of both the Upper and Lower Houses. That’s because the BBC, in collusion with several small satellite TV networks in England, had drafted a new policy bill on British satellite TV technology that was tailor-made for Murdoch or, in other words, anyone in England could run a satellite TV network except the Murdoch Group.
