Chapter 1112: The person behind the scenes is who?

The FBI building, Edgar Hoover’s office was brightly lit!

He knew that Donnie was attending President Coolidge’s party tonight, which made Edgar Hoover very worried, fearing that this was Donnie starting to target him.

He was waiting for a call from John Garner, hoping to hear something favorable from John Garner’s mouth that Donnie really believed in him again.

Ring ring!

The phone rang, making Edgar Hoover’s heart tremble, a sudden panic rising in his heart!

But he still answered the phone immediately.

"This is Edgar Hoover!"

"Chief, something big has happened!" On the other end of the phone wasn’t John Garner, but Trey Layman.

"What happened?" Edgar Hoover’s heart was a bit flustered!

"Donnie Block’s convoy was attacked by gunmen, and now Donnie Block has been taken to the hospital!"

"What?" Edgar Hoover was instantly thrown into chaos; he indeed found some gunmen but hadn’t decided whether to act against Donnie.

Because as long as there were any other options, Edgar Hoover didn’t want to confront Donnie with weapons, as Edgar Hoover understood too well that if Donnie actually died in an accident, it would be a massive problem.

So earlier, when he contacted Trey Layman, it was just to have gunmen ready, but he explicitly stated that no action could be taken without his orders!

But unexpectedly, tonight, Donnie was ambushed by gunmen?

"Didn’t I tell you? Without my orders, you must absolutely refrain from taking any action!" Edgar Hoover nearly shouted these words!

Trey Layman hurriedly explained: "It wasn’t my men, my men were just tailing him, without your orders, how could I dare to let anyone take action?"

Edgar Hoover, already extremely panicked, still issued the most correct instruction at this time: "Immediately have your people leave Washington, the farther the better, also, the two gunmen you found must leave Washington immediately!"

Trey Layman, however, did not have Edgar Hoover’s mindset, asking, "Mr. Hoover, since we didn’t do this, why so cautious!"

"Idiot!" Edgar Hoover had no time to explain: "Follow my orders, do not delay at all!"

Trey Layman could only obey!

After hanging up on Trey Layman, Edgar Hoover immediately called all FBI operatives in Washington and several deputy directors, instructing them to get to FBI headquarters at once.

Donnie Block being ambushed by gunmen was already a huge issue, the entire Washington would be thrown into panic and various law enforcement agencies would spring into action; if by then anyone caught Trey Layman’s men tailing or preparing gunmen, Edgar Hoover would be unable to explain!

At the same time, Edgar Hoover immediately gathered the on-duty staff at headquarters.

Fully armed!

Who exactly wanted to assassinate Donnie Block?

After all orders were given, Edgar Hoover sat in his office, feeling a bone-chilling cold.

He didn’t know who wanted Donnie Block dead, but one thing was certain, if something really happened to Donnie Block at this moment, all eyes would turn to him.

Which means he was being made the scapegoat!

After figuring all this out, Edgar Hoover immediately cast his suspicious gaze at John Garner, as John Garner had previously suggested that he get rid of Donnie Block!

Thinking of this, Edgar Hoover wrote down two terms on the paper on his desk.

Texas, radium radiation.

Behind John Garner were the farmers of Texas, and now Donnie Block’s Venus Bank was scrambling to acquire farms in Texas, which would inevitably create conflict with the local farmers!

Radium radiation, John Garner had once been the protector of many radium product merchants in Congress; although this matter had already come to a close, Donnie indeed had a list of backer investors of radium product merchants, this piece of information would certainly be something Donnie could use against these people in the future.

Even though John Garner’s name wasn’t on those lists, a thorough investigation could still find evidence.

For his political career, John Garner might indeed do something!

So, could this matter have been done by John Garner?

Edgar Hoover didn’t rush to a conclusion, for there were still things that didn’t make sense.

Meanwhile, all the on-duty personnel in the FBI building were ready.

Edgar Hoover didn’t wait for the deputy directors who were rushing over, leaving behind his assistant to inform them of the situation, while he himself led his men to the hospital!

No matter the current state of affairs, Edgar Hoover had to be at the hospital.

Also, as Edgar Hoover left, the phone in his office began to ring non-stop. His assistant stayed behind to answer the calls.

Calls from President Coolidge, calls from Treasurer Andrew Mellon, calls from Commerce Secretary Herbert Hoover...

In one night, almost all of Washington’s high-ranking officials had called the FBI.

Edgar Hoover’s assistant was now dripping with cold sweat....

When Edgar Hoover arrived at the hospital, his face turned increasingly grim.
