Chapter 66: From Chosen Bride to Rejected She-wolf

She opened her eyes in an enormous chamber, surrounded by four healers. She did not need to be told that she was in a royal healing den. She just didn’t know what happened to her. The last thing she remembered was staring at Brandon’s picture in military regalia and his name written in full. Prince Brandon Oliver Frostbane. Tears began to stream down her wolf. She knew it was her fault, but he should have forgiven her. He shouldn’t go on without explaining some certain things to her.

She never knew a wolf was also holding her palm until she felt a gentle squeeze. She looked up and saw Princess Elara sitting beside the bed.

"How do you feel now?" One of the healers asked. She was short of words, so she nodded slowly.

"You are okay, right?" He asked again. She nodded again. The healer examined her again, nodded his head, and removed the stethoscope from his ear. They assembled their medical equipment and left the chamber. Their departure was followed by dead silence. None of them were saying anything.

She looked behind her. Brandon was not at her back. She lifted her head and saw him sitting on a sofa, staring at her. His face was quite expressionless. She dropped her head back on the bed.

"Emma, I’m very sorry. I wanted to tell you everything, but it was not my responsibility." Princess Elara said, giving her a gentle squeeze on her palm.

"I will never in my life get mad at you. You saved me. I’m mad at him," she lifted her face and gave Brandon an unpleasant look. He maintained the expressionless look he had on his face. There was another round of silence in the chamber.

"Elara, please give me a little space; I want to talk to him."

"Sure," she grinned and stood up.

"Thank you," she whimpered.

"For what?" Elara asked.

"Telling him about the howling union." Princess Elara looked at her sibling and smiled.

"I can’t believe he told you about the union but couldn’t tell you his real identity. I’m leaving, just do whatever you like to him. You have my full support.

"He also did not tell me anything about the howling union. My eyes are open now and I can read the handwriting on the wall. I’m not naive anymore," she said, keeping her eyes straight.

"Alright, I will be right back," she said and left the chamber. She kept staring out the window and couldn’t say anything to Brandon. He did not say anything to her either. He just sat there and continued staring at her.

"You fell in love with her the first day you set your eyes on her. I asked you and you denied it. You taught her how to play the games we were playing and kept allowing her to win while you challenged me. I saw the way you were pampering her that day. I asked you, and you said it was nothing. You came behind me and invited her for dinner!

I was blinded by my love for you. Your innocent appearance deceived me. Your fake kindness made ....oh.... Zoe was right. She tried to warn me."

"I’m not in love with Lunara."

"Why did you sleep with her?" She shouted at him.

"Do not shout at me."

"Why?" she said, sitting up to see his face. She wanted to look at him eyeball to eyeball.

"I counted years, months, hours, minutes, and seconds. I did not lose weight because of the stress I went through while I was in academy trying to get A’s, but emotional stress I went through. When I came back, you were the first person I wanted to see.

Emma, what did you do? You hit and rejected me after kissing a he-wolf in my presence! If you had done it behind me, I wouldn’t mind. But kissing him in my presence was like shooting me in the head! Emma, you killed me that day!"

"It was just a kiss!"

"To you, it was just a kiss! But to me, it felt like a bullet in the brain. I lost my mind. I suffered from depression and I couldn’t eat for days. I felt like someone who was withdrawing from cocaine. Lunara was always in my chamber trying so hard to take advantage of my low moment. After some months, I decided to forget you and move on.

I painted your picture on her, hoping to get on with her. When I looked at her, I felt I was looking at you. The next day, the picture I painted wore off and I couldn’t stand her presence again. I went after you and vowed never to give up because I am useless without you!"

Tears covered her eyes. She looked at him, his eyes were also covered with tears.

"It’s my fault."

"No, it’s mine and I’m sorry," he muttered, wiping his tears. She sniffed and wiped hers with her palm.

"The pack scholarship; it was from you, right?" She asked with a flat tone, trying to avoid his stare.

"The Princess and I own the scholarship program. I gave her instructions before leaving and I trust her."

She licked her lower lip and continued looking outside. The ensuing darkness and the fancy lights outside the palace made the whole place look like a wonderland.

"Oh my moon goddess!" She whimpered with a low tone and fixed her eyes on him. His expressionless face changed and she could see worries written on his face.

"The box!"

"What about it?"

"It contained the house documents, right?"

"Yes, the house is in your name."

She grabbed one of the pillows that were on the bed and threw it at him. He dodged and the pillow landed on a wall behind him.

"You sat there and watched her throw me out of my own den!"

"I hated her and had not been talking to her since that one-day mating happened, but I spoke to her again the day I found out she pushed you out of your comfort zone. She and her maids noticed I was excited. I woke up that morning and greeted everybody. She said it on the last program we watched together."

She fixed her eyes on the wall and her tears flew uncontrollably. He stood up from his seat and joined her on the bed. He tried to wipe her tears, she quickly pushed him away and got down from the bed. He halted her before she could reach the door handle.

"Leave me alone."

"Moonblessed, I’m sorry."

She kept quiet as she began to read another piece of handwriting on the wall. Her eyes faded slowly.

"Oh my moon goddess! Oh my moon goddess!!"

"What is it?" Brandon asked anxiously, shaking her shoulders and looking into her eyes.

"I know why the King wanted you to marry her."

"I told you before. He had you investigated and didn’t like the fact that you were adopted. He introduced your sibling to me as the future Luna when I came back from academy and insisted I must mate her. I was surprised because Elara and I accepted her as a sibling before I left for academy."

"I thought I was naive, but I just found out you are more naive."

"Emma!"

She quickly lowered her head. "I’m sorry. I grew up with her and I know her very well. You are not naive, but you just don’t know who you are messing with. Your father did not reject me because I was adopted. It was just a silly excuse."

"I don’t get you."

"Did he say anything about my being adopted before sending you to school?"

"No, he did not have a problem with that. I was surprised when it became an issue. What do you think is the reason why they want me to mate with her?"

She looked at him, his curiosity was quite apparent. It was her opportunity to pay him back for what he did to her.

"You are going to figure everything out by yourself. If I were you, I would start training healers that would put my broken wolf together when the truth unfolds."

"My moonblessed mate, what is it?"

"Why did you invite her for dinner behind me?"

"I asked you a question; please do not change the topic."

"Answer my question first. I might tell you why the king wants you to mate her if your reason for inviting her for dinner behind me is reasonable enough."

"Alright, I invited her because of what transpired between my father and me."

"What happened between you two?"

"The pull I felt toward you was overwhelming—I was terrified I might lose you. No matter what I did, my wolf kept reaching for you. Even when I tried to deny it... even when I hurt you... even when I lost you—it was always you, Emma. Always you."

"Then tell me—why did you invite Lunara?"

"It’s a long story." 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚

"Summarize it."
