Alpha's Hidden Precious Luna-Chapter 77
Kai POV
After meeting with Lily this morning, a tradition that was fast becoming a habit, I was sure that I was going to have a good day when I got a call from Celeste.
Our mother has just left her house and in her own words, she ferreted information from her. If there was something my mom was good at, it was getting information from anyone and Celeste because of her beliefs doesn’t know how to lie.
She had sounded so frantic and was begging me to forgive her. To an extent, I was glad that the cat had been let out of the bag and I was surprised that my mom was not acting how I thought she would If anything she didn’t call or send several messages like she would in normal circumstances like this.
So, when I got home and saw her sitting in the living room – she rarely comes to this side of the pack house – I didn’t need to be told twice. As I turned to go to my room, she grabbed my arm pulling me back to her.
“Fine, give Briella a chance. Go out with her on multiple dates, if you still feel that way after a month, then I’ll approve of your relationship.”
I sighed and turned to her. “Mom... I am not confused. I’m old enough to understand my feelings and know when it’s just lust or love. Lily is my mate and I know you’re worried about her family and all that, I cannot go into a lot of details yet because it’s not in my position yet to talk about her past but her father is an Alpha. She comes from a respectable family and pack.” 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶
“So you would not listen to me?” her voice cracked as she stared at me with disbelief.
“Mom... anything but this.”
She scoffed “Everything I’ve done, all the sacrifices I’ve made, you won’t even do this one thing I’m asking and pleading. Do you want me to go down on my knees? Tell me, what do you want?”
“Mom, please,” I sighed. “You don’t have to go to that extreme. I don’t love Briella... I’m not sure I like her that much either. It’s a waste of time. I wish you had consulted me before you accepted any marriage proposition on my behalf.”
We stared at each other for the longest time. I stood at the base of the staircase watching my mother’s ridged back as she went back to retrieve all the things she came with into her bag. I could tell she was angry.
“Mom,” I started with a placating tone but she raised her hand to silence me.
“Save it,” she said coldly. “I’ve heard enough.”
I knew the look in her eyes. It wasn’t just anger – it was a deep, protective pain. I recognized the same look she’d worn years ago when my father had made choices that nearly destroyed our family.
She finished gathering her things and turned to me with pain in her voice. “I won’t force you again, Kai but I don’t want to see you going down the same road twice,” she said softly, her voice breaking slightly on the last word. “Getting your heart shattered. Losing everything you’ve worked for.”
Her words hung between us and I knew she wasn’t just talking about Lily or the pack politics. It was something else. I remember how broken she had been after my father had left and was left to pick up the pieces.
“This is different Mom,” I insisted.
She huffed, turning to me again. “Is it? A mate who hasn’t fully committed. A potential alliance was destroyed. Chosing emotion over responsibility?”
She wasn’t asking a question. She was outlining a similar scenario.
“I’m not my father,” I said quietly.
“No,” she agreed. “But love–mate bond can make Werewolves do foolish things. I’ve seen it destroy men stronger than you.”
“Mom, Lily is different. Maybe if you meet her, you’d be able to understand.” I insisted again.
She laughed bitterly. “They’re always different until they’re not.”
She picked up her coat and her bag. “Think carefully, Kia. The pack comes first. Always.”
She came closer and cupped my face, her eyes glassy with tenderness as she sighed. “My baby boy... I don’t like seeing you get hurt like before.”
Like before? I wondered.
I wanted to ask but I didn’t. So, I watched the door click shut with a finality that echoed through the silence of the room. I stood frozen, staring at the place she had just vacated My chest felt tight with guilt and frustration not to mention helplessness.
I sighed dragging a hand through my hair as I dropped on the chair, she was sitting a while ago. The fire in the hearth crackled softly, its warmth doing little to ease the chill that had settled over me. I knew why she was upset but what did she mean about me hurting before.
When was that? I shook my head to clear the thoughts, making a mental note to text Lily that I’d arrived home. Maybe my mother needs time or perhaps, I’ll need to introduce her to Lily. That way, she’d see she has no reason to worry about anything.
I stood abruptly, needing to move, to do something. The room felt stifling, the walls were closing in around me. Grabbing my coat, I stepped outside into the cool night air. The stars above were bright like scattered diamonds and I wondered if I should bring up the matter about Lily finally letting go of Lucas and choosing me.
The last time I had brought it up, she had asked for time but how much time was too much time with the conversation I just had with my mom now, I knew the doubts would begin to filter in more than it was before. I needed to take care of it as soon as possible. To at least know my stand in her life.
I stopped by the fountain at the centre of the garden, the sound of water trickling soothing some of the tension in my chest. I leaned against the edge, staring into the rippling surface. The reflection that stared back at me looked as conflicted as I felt.
“Why does everything have to be so damn complicated?” I muttered under my breath.
