Chapter 60: Chapter 60

Kai POV

It was one of those days when I preferred to come to stare at my mate training than to attend to the growing pile of paperwork on my desk.

She was running laps around the training ground and I couldn’t help but wonder what it would feel like if she was utilizing that strength for something else. I sighed wistfully, trying to hide my bulge.

It was becoming harder to pretend I didn’t want her. I was driven by my loss each morning to come here and it was becoming incredibly difficult to suppress the burst of emotions I always felt whenever she was next to me.

I know I promised slow but... I wanted her to trust me quickly enough and fast... I wanted to consummate our bond so fast and become one with her. I’ve caught Jake’s gaze lingering on her more than once – more than he should and these days, I get panic attacks from thinking about someone else trying to woo my woman.

As she finished her final lap, I walked up to her handing her a bottle of water and towel.

“Well done!” I commented. “

“Thank you, Alpha Kai,” she murmured, keeping her tone neutral. “I wasn’t expecting you. You said you had a lot of things to do. Don’t you have the pack to run? Why are you here?”

I smiled, offering her a sheepish look. “I’m sure the pack can survive without me for an hour. I’ve missed you, Lily. I couldn’t concentrate on doing anything. I just knew I had to come and see you.”

She sighed. “I understand but people are beginning to grow suspicious of you always showing up here and helping only me. I don’t want them to get ideas. Can you please stop coming?” she gave me a pleading look.

I sucked in my teeth. “I don’t know, Lily. This distance is driving me crazy. I always need you to be by me, that’s the only thing that keeps me motivated and makes me function better. Haven’t you thought about it yet?”

She lowered her gaze, playing the hem of her workout blouse. “Not yet but I’ll give you a reply soon.”

I shook my head. “Still, that won’t do. Listen, I’ve given it a lot of thought and the only way to stop this yearning and all, is to have you next to me at all times. A position opened up in my office. Part-time, flexible hours that would work around your class schedule,” I moved closer. “You’d be working for me and me alone.”

“What’s the job all about?”

“To check and reply to my emails and of course inform me about them, to follow up with alliances, take my calls. That sort of thing. You’re perfect for the role.”

She shook her head. “I don’t think it’s wise to have both of us together in one place at the same time. It might be distracting. We need to think this through carefully.”

I raised an eyebrow. “What’s there to think about? You need a means of making small cash now and again to take care of yourself. This is a perfect fit.”

She took a deep breath, closing her eyes. “And what about Briella? It’s enough that you’re already acting suspicious around me whenever she’s around but how would you explain hiring me?”

I sighed, I didn’t think that far ahead. If Briella was to suspect something was going on between me and Lily, she would tell my mother and I didn’t want to imagine what her reaction would be.

Besides, I wanted to protect Lily at all costs.

“Still we can try to be careful,” I ran a hand through my dark hair, “I can control myself, Lily?”

“Can you?” she asked with a scoff. “Because offering me this job, finding excuses to always watch me train... that doesn’t feel like control, Kai. It feels like you’re trying to get the whole world to know both in words and action. So, the question is, can we be careful enough?”

My jaw tightened as I cursed under my breath, regretting for the thousandth time that I had let my mother rope me in with Briella.

“We can do it if we put our mind to it, Lily,” I said quietly. “Trust me....”

“No!” she shook her head. “I cannot take your word for it, Kai...”

“Lily...”

“Let me finish,” she interrupted gently. “You’ve been good to me so far, Kai. Aside from the fact that you’re my mate, I know you’re a good person and the situation with Briella is beyond your control at the moment but putting ourselves in a situation where we’d be together every day?” she shook her head. “That’s just asking for trouble.” 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞

“You don’t trust yourself?” I heard myself ask.

“Do you trust yourself?” she countered pursing her lips. “Briella goes on and on about your engagement to anyone who wants to hear. The only reason she hasn’t stormed the training ground yet is because the people here are younger. Else that... everyone knows Briella would be your Luna someday.”

“I’ll look for a way to...”

“I know that, Kai,” she said softly, placing a hand on my arm. “I want this more than anyone but you also have to consider my status. If this gets out, you won’t be able to protect me to a certain extent. I don’t want to be caught up in any kind of fight or whatever that would lead to being asked to leave...”

“No one would do that to you, Lily...” I grabbed her hands “Not while I’m alive and still Alpha.”

“Well, you do not rule the pack alone. A lot of people might protest and, in the end, you’ll have to give in to their request. But this is not me trying to say that we won’t still see each other. We can look for other ways...”

“I’m tired of hiding you, Lily,” I sighed pressing a kiss to her knuckle.

“I don’t mind being your little secret for a while. Don’t worry, our time will come, okay?”

“I care about Briella but not enough to want her as a mate.”

“I know, Kai,” she nodded “But we need to be serious about protecting what we have. I won’t take the job, you’ll have to stop showing up at my training sessions every day, with no special attention. We need to still remember our place.”

“It’s going to be hard.”

“I know but you have to try. In the public, we should remain as Alpha and pack members. Stop looking for ways to be near me in front of everyone. And I...” she took a deep breath, “I need to stop hoping you will.”

I sighed with a sullen expression. “Of course, you’re right. I just...” I trailed off, unable to finish the thought.

“I know,” she said softly. “Me too. Go back to your office Kai... we’ll think of something soon. I trust you.”
