Chapter 57: Chapter 57

Briella POV

I pulled my car out of the parking lot of the Pack’s Central building easing the sleek black car into the street. I gripped the steering wheel, my mind replaying the scene that had just happened a few minutes ago in Kai’s office.

My perfectly manicured fingers drummed against the leather steering wheel, with a mix of satisfaction and frustration coursing through my veins.

I’d finally done it – I finally kissed Kai, the most eligible Alpha in the region, something I’d been trying to make happen for months. Ever since his mother had practically handpicked me as his fiancée and Luna-to-be, I’d been doing everything I could to make him see me as more an just a pack obligation.

The memory of his lips against mine made me sigh with longing. It was unexpected, I didn’t think he would give in but even as my lips pressed against his, even as my hands had grazed his neck, I could feel that he was ... distracted.

Distant. Like he was miles away and was not really interested in the kiss.

“What was missing?” I murmured to myself stopping at a red light. The kiss had been technically perfect – I have enough experience to ensure that at least. But there had been no spark, no burning desire from Kai. He had participated, yes, but it had felt like I was taking too much.

Just the thought of it provoked me more. I mean, I was the perfect match for him: strong, respected and as everyone in the pack would agree, beautiful. I have trained to become a Luna from the first day I took my first steps, I was everything anyone could dream of but Kai doesn’t see it that way.

I came from one of the most prestigious Werewolf bloodlines and Pack in the region. My marriage to Kai would unite two powerful packs and would strengthen both their positions in the region.

So why wasn’t it enough?

And then there was that girl, Lily.

My lips curved into a scowl. The way Kai had reacted when she walked in – pushing me aside as if he was worried about Lily finding us in that position – made my blood boil. I was the future Luna, but Kai seemed preoccupied with her.

What was so special about her? She was a nobody, a girl who didn’t have a wolf. A poor, wolfless girl with a troubled past who couldn’t possibly have anything of value to offer Kai or the pack.

My knuckles tightened around the steering, turning white as my chest heaved with malice. What did he see in Lily?

The light turned green and I pressed down on the accelerator, harder than was necessary.

“She’s just a wolfless girl,” I scoffed. “That’s all she is. So why does Kai look at her like she hung the moon?”

From the first day I’d caught him staring at her with nothing but pure lust, I’d been suspicious, but with what happened earlier... I knew there was something I didn’t know... at least not yet.

I needed to uncover whatever she had on my mate. I needed information and knowing who Kai was, he would never tell me anything directly but I knew someone who might.

A while later, I arrived at The Howling Moon Bar and smoothly pulled into a parking space. I parked and stepped out, straightening my coat and taking a deep breath to hide my irritation. I hated places like this – the loud music, the stench of alcohol and vomit, the sweating bodies dancing with reckless abandon – but if anyone could help me figure out what was going on between Kai and Lily, it was Kai’s cousin, Kevin.

Kevin was... different. He was a salient, notorious troublemaker, and with his wild behaviour although he recently got his act together he was loyal to Kai. To him, Kai was a god and he didn’t hide it.

I made my way towards the entrance, ignoring the appreciative eyes of the people drinking outside. Stepping into the bar, the interior was exactly what I expected – loud, crowded, reeking of cheap alcohol and desperate perfume. I wrinkled my nose squinting through the low lights, scanning the room.

It didn’t take long to spot Kevin. He was lounging in a corner booth near the back, his arms slung around two giggling girls who looked at him as if he was the most entertaining man on earth as he poured them a shot and the others with him too.

His reputation as a playboy was not a new thing but more importantly, he was one of the few people who truly knew Kai.

As I approached the booth, Kevin glanced up as I neared, his eyes lit up with recognition as a mischievous smile crept onto his face.

“Well, well,” he drawled. “If it isn’t my future sister-in-law. To what do I owe the honour, dearest Luna? Did Kai send you?”

“You wish!’ I scoffed, crossing my arms as I arched a brow towards him. “Is this the study group you were telling Kai about?”

He chuckled, giving me a shameless wink. “I study life, Briella. Can’t put a price on that kind of education.”

The girls by him burst into laughter, clearly smitten by him but I wasn’t in the mood for laughs. I rolled my eyes, stopping myself from lashing out.

“I need to talk to you. Alone.”

I demanded my gaze flickering to the women on either side of him. Immediately, his expression shifted slightly, his smirk faltering.

“Ladies, if you’ll excuse us? Family business calls.” The women pouted but he gave them a nod and they reluctantly slid out of the booth, casting curious glances back at me as they left.

“Have a seat,” Kevin gestured to the now-empty space opposite him and waited until the girls were out of earshot before raising an eyebrow, leaning back casually.

“So, what’s got you all riled up? Don’t tell me it’s Kai. Again?”

Ignoring his smug tone, I reached for the bottle of unopened beer on the table and expertly opened it with my teeth, taking a big gulp.

“Can’t a girl visit her future family?” 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺

“A girl? Sure. You?” he snorted. “Don’t play with me, Briella, you’ve got that look in your eye. The one that says you’re hunting for something and everything is not alright.”

I took another gulp from the bottle of beer, surprised to find it tasted nice today. Maybe it was because of the rotten mood I was in.

“Well,” I started watching Kevin’s reaction. “Something strange happened today, with Kai and that new pack member, Lily.”

His brows furrowed. “Lily and Alpha Kai? What’s up with them?”

“I was in Kai’s office earlier and we were making out. Things were... progressing nicely between us.” I smirked at the memory. “But when she walked in, it was like the switch was flipped. Kai practically threw me aside to go to her.”

Kevin took a long drink from his drink. “So? You found that strange” he shrugged. “Why are you telling me?”

“Strange doesn’t begin to cover it,” I leaned forward. “I just want to know what’s going on with him and that girl. The way he looks at her... it’s not normal. Especially not for someone like her. A wolfless nobody.”

Kevin smirked. “Didn’t know you were keeping tabs on my uncle’s taste in women.”

I scowled. “She’s not his taste. I don’t know how she did it but she has caught his attention for some reason. I just don’t understand it. Kai has responsibilities. He has me. And yet, he’s been acting...strange around her.”

Kevin leaned forward, stroking his bare chin as his eyes gleamed with amusement. “Well, I don’t know what you want me to say, Bri. Maybe she’s got something that’s keeping him interested. Have you considered that maybe they’re... you know, mates?”
