Chapter 55: Chapter 55

Kai POV

It’s been days since I and Lily last spoke and the distance between us was slowly driving me to the brink of madness.

Each passing hour away from her felt like an eternity, Hud had refused to speak to me because I had refused to take him to see Lily.

I sat at my desk, staring blankly at the paperwork piled in front of me, my mind completely elsewhere. No matter how hard I tried to focus, my thoughts kept drifting back to Lily. How could she stand not seeing or hearing from me for so long? The thought alone twisted like a knife in my gut.

It was as if she didn’t care that we were mates. The thoughts infuriated me. I, on the other hand, found it nearly impossible to focus on anything but her. I couldn’t go a single hour without thinking of her, and yet she seemed completely unfazed.

A soft knock on the door startled me from my brooding. But before I could respond, the door swung open and Briella – my so-called assistant walked in. Though being my assistant, she was not able to do anything more except bring me paper or files and make me coffee.

The only reason I had reluctantly agreed was for the sake of silencing my mother. If I hadn’t, she would eventually wear me down with pressure and I would accept in the end, only that, my mental health would be in tatters by the time she was done.

She cat-walked towards my desk, a sultry smile on her face as she dropped the file she was holding.

“Good morning, Kia,” she said with a tone that grated on my nerves. She didn’t wait for an invitation as she walked around my desk, her eyes glinting with purpose. “You’ve been working so hard lately. I thought you could use a little break.”

I leaned back in my chair, my eyes narrowing slightly as she perched herself on the edge of my desk at first. I hadn’t wanted this too – wanted to be engaged to Briella but it was my mother. She finally clubbed me into doing this and the only reason I had agreed was to get her off my back. A decision I regretted more and more every day.

Briella however, didn’t seem to notice my growing frustration. Without asking, she moved to my lap, perching herself on it as her arms looped around my neck. I stiffened, my instincts screaming at me to push her away but instead my hands curled instinctively on the armrests of my chair.

Her fingers trailed down my collar, slipping beneath the fabric of my shirt. “You need to relax,” she whispered, her breath hot against my ear. “You’ve been so tense lately.”

My jaw tightened and for another moment, I wanted to push her off again because I wasn’t in the mood for her games. But then, thoughts of Lily crept back into my mind. “How could she be so cold? Even after discovering we were mates, she became distant – almost indifferent. The fact that she has not bothered to reach out to me only added fuel to the fire of my frustration.

A small, petty part of me whispered that maybe this was what I needed. Maybe this would make her realize what she was missing.

Briella leaned in, her scent enveloping me. It was pleasant enough but it lacked the intoxicating pull of Lily’s.

“We should be spending time together, Kai... getting to know each other. We would be married soon and this is the only time we can learn ourselves, hmm...” she murmured, her hand trailing along my arm.

I remained still, conflicted. Hud snarled with displeasure but the human part of me was tired of feeling rejected and alone. Lily had barely acknowledged our mate bond, perhaps it was time to show her that I had other options.

With a sudden movement, Briella rose and sat astride on my lap, I could feel the heat pooling from her woman core. The memory of Lily’s coldness teased into my mind. Briella must have sensed my hesitation because she took it as permission to press further. 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺

Her lips brushed against my neck and before I could stop her, she tilted my head toward hers, capturing my mouth in a kiss.

Initially, I felt so annoyed but that quickly shifted. In my frustration, I allowed it, even as my gut twisted in protest. With a low growl, I cupped her face pulling her closer to me, giving her permission to close the distance between us.

The kiss deepened as her lips met mine eager and insistent. Her tongue slid into my mouth and for a fleeting second, I tried to use it as a distraction – a way to push thoughts of Lily out of my mind. I forced myself to respond. Briella’s hand slipped into my collar, her nails scraping lightly against my skin as she deepened the kiss, her tongue swirling around mine.

For a moment, I wanted to lose myself in the sensation...

But it didn’t work.

With each passing second, the wrongness of it all grew stronger. Hud howled in protest and I felt a wave of revulsion wash over me. Despite promising myself not to think of Lily, her thoughts slipped into my mind.

How she was the only one I wanted, the only one whose touch could calm the storm inside me. This kiss, this attempt at distracting myself – it was nothing compared to what I felt with Lily. Regret washed over me and waves of shame, and just as I was about to pull away, there was another knock at the door.

Briella jumped slightly, startled by the sudden intrusion. I was already pushing her off my lap, my heart sinking as my secretary opened the door and stepped inside. I was struggling to button the few buttons on my shirt that had come undone from Briella’s hands.

“Alpha!” my secretary began her eyes flickering briefly to Briella. Her nose wrinkled with disapproval but she said nothing of it. “You have a visitor.”

I frowned, wiping my mouth with the back of my hand as if I was trying to erase what had just happened.

“Who is it?” I asked, noting with dismay that my hand had a smear of Briella’s lipstick from when I had wiped my mouth. I wondered if the stain was still there.

My secretary moved to one side and ushered my visitor...

It was Lily.
