Alpha's Hidden Precious Luna-Chapter 51
Kai POV
I could sense her hesitation... I could feel it deep within our mate bond.
She shook her head. “I don’t know,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “It’s just... too much.”
My grip tightened slightly, afraid that she might slip away from me. But then, seeing the exhaustion in her eyes, I softened. Gently, I brought her hand to my lips, kissing her knuckle.
“I’m sorry, it’s my fault. I’m pushing too hard. You’ve only just awakened and there’s so much you don’t know yet. I’m just excited... I’m sorry!” I said again.
“Maybe!” she gave me a thin smile.
“Don’t worry,” I said taking my hands away from her waist, Hud whined within me but I cut off his voice. He had to learn how to be patient. “We take it one day at a time. I’m not asking for everything all at once, Lily. But if you give me a chance, you’ll know we are meant to be together.”
“Okay!’ she said softly, a tentative smile forming on her lips. “One day at a time.”
“Good! Rest now!” I murmured. “We’ll talk more when you’re ready and...”
She staggered and fell face flat on my chest.
At first, I thought she was just leaning in, trying to embrace me but after a few minutes, there was no movement, that was when I noticed that her arms had gone limp.
Panic swept through me – it was something I’d never felt before. Immediately I sent a general mindlink to everyone in the house at that moment.
“Please, somebody help me! something’s wrong with Lily again!” I sent it immediately.
A few seconds later, I heard footsteps hurrying towards her bedroom before the door was flung open. My grandfather loomed at the entrance, his eyes scanning the situation.
“What happened to her?” he asked entering the room.
“I don’t know!” I bellowed still holding on to Lily “We were just talking one minute, the next she lay limp in my hands. Please, we have to call for the best healer in the pack. Could you send a word, already? Please!” I begged.
“Kai!” my grandfather called my name sharply, making me look at his face “Can you stop panicking? She’s still breathing, everything would be alright. Why don’t you lay her on the bed, and I’ll check her for you. If there’s any need for her to go to the Pack Hospital then...”
“Or we should call the pack healer at once!” I bellowed, laying her gently on the bed. I paced the room as my grandfather checked her, taking in her pulse, and her temperature and listening for her heart breath.
Every second felt like a torture to me. I didn’t trust my grandfather and I didn’t want to waste time anymore. I moved towards the door, to rush towards the pack clinic when my grandfather placed a firm hand on my shoulder, stopping me.
“Calm yourself, Kai. There’s no need to overreact. I’ve checked her and she’s fine, she’s just exhausted, all that shifting took a toll on her. So, let her rest. She’ll be fine.”
“Are you sure?” I asked staring at her sleeping form, a bit relieved.
“Yes!” my grandfather nodded “I’ll go downstairs and tell everyone not to bother. You alarmed us all.”
He tapped my back one last time before walking out of the room. I stood there, watching her sleep, Liam arrived shortly after, from the meeting and came to stand beside me.
“How did it go?” I asked without preamble.
“It went well. I told her father that she wouldn’t be a problem,” he said.
I nodded, grateful that Liam had handled the situation. I trusted him and it was a bit reassuring to know Lily’s family wasn’t pressing for any action against her. “Good!” I nodded. “And make sure no one in the pack finds out that she was declared a rogue before coming here. As far as anyone here is concerned, she’s under our protection, end of story.”
Liam gave a brief nod, his eyes flicking over to Lily’s still figure. “I’ll make sure of it,”.
I relaxed slightly, grateful for my Beta’s support. But there was one more thing nagging at me. “There’s something else,” I said lowering my voice further. “When I came up to Lily’s room, there was someone else there. He was a man and he seemed mysterious. I didn’t get a good look at him; I was just so angry...” I trailed off.
“You want me to look into it?” he arched his brow.
“Yes!” I nodded. “Look into him for me. I want to know everything about him. Who he is, where’s he from and why was he in Lily’s room? There was a sense of familiarity between him and Lily too. That might help in finding him quickly,” I added.
“Sure, thing Alpha!” Liam nodded “I’ll get on it right away.”
Before leaving, Liam’s expression softened as he looked at me. “You should rest too, Kai. You’re no good to anyone if you run yourself into the ground.” But sleep was the last thing on my mind.
In the days that followed, I settled into a rhythm, I divided my time between my duties as an Alpha and Lily’s beside. I kept a constant vigil over her, stealing moments whenever I could to check on her. Each time I entered her room, I would hope that she would be awake only for that hope to be dashed when I saw her sleeping form. Although I tried to stay patient the worry gnawed at me every hour that passed.
One of the days, I decided to work in her room. I set up my work on her desk in her room when my mother’s voice suddenly echoed through my mind, making me jump.
“Kai, darling!” she started “Why haven’t I seen you in the office for the past several days? Is everything alright?”
I suppressed a groan, trying not to grimace. My mother’s ‘concern’ was rarely without ulterior motives.
“Everything is fine, Mother,” I replied through the mindlink. “I’ve just been handling some delicate pack matters.”
There was a pause from her end and I could almost see her sceptical expression. “I see,” she finally responded. Well, I need to see you in the office. There are some important matters we need to discuss.”
The finality in her tone made it clear this wasn’t a request. I sighed, casting a longing glance at Lily’s still form.
“Fine, I’ll be there shortly,” I promised, already dreading whatever my mother had in store.
Reluctantly, I gathered my things, casting one last glance at Lily before leaving the room. I told myself I’d be back soon. I just had to deal with my mother.
The trip to the pack’s main office building felt like a journey to the gallows. Hud paced restlessly within me, agitated at being away from our mate. But duty called and I’ve long learned the consequences of ignoring my mother’s sermon.
As I approached my mother’s office, a familiar scent made my steps falter. My suspicions were confirmed when I pushed open the door to find not only my mother but also Briella – the she-wolf my so-called fiancée.
She was sitting so comfortably, her posture relaxed as if she belonged there.
“Ah, Kai, there you are,” my mother said, rising from behind her desk with a smile that didn’t reach her eyes. “I was beginning to worry.”
My gaze flicked between my mother and Briella. “Mother,” I started “Briella. I wasn’t to be a ... group meeting.”
My mother waved a hand dismissively. “Oh, don’t be so formal, darling. Briella is practically family already.” 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝙬𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝒎
My jaw tightened and the desire to turn around and leave was almost overwhelming, but I forced myself to say put.
“Was there something specific you wanted to discuss?” I asked making no move to sit down. The sooner this was over, the sooner I could return to Lily.
“There is,” my mother said adopting her businesslike tone. “It has come to my attention that you’ve been somewhat...overwhelmed with your duties lately. So, I’ve arranged for Briella here to be your new personal assistant.”
My eyes narrowed. “What?”
“She needs an internship for her business degree,” my mother continued ignoring my annoyance “And you need someone to help you manage your so many duties. It’s a perfect match, don’t you think?”
“No I don’t” I replied flatly. “Mother, you don’t need to do these things without my permission. I’m sure Briella has better things to do than being cooped in the office all day waiting on me. Thank you, but I’ll pass.”.
“Come on, Kai!” Briella didn’t seem fazed by my cold response. She stood and sauntered over to me, her hand resting lightly on my arm. “We’ll be working together more closely. Not only would it help us know each other better, you’ll see how helpful I can be.”
Her words were laced with an underlying suggestion that I didn’t miss. Hud bristled at her contact and the memory of her kissing me a few days ago flashed in my mind – how I had let my anger and frustration with Lily push me into her arms – a situation I deeply regretted.
I shrugged her hand off and stepped back. “I’ll take care of my own work, thanks. You can find someone else to assist.”
“Oh!” my mother chuckled, her expression hardening. “It wasn’t a request, Kai... and certainly it’s not up for debate. Briella will work as your personal assistant and that’s settled.”
