Chapter 47: Chapter 47

Kai POV

The news was so shocking that I rose to my feet abruptly. The room fell silent as everyone turned to stare at me in surprise and confusion.

“Alpha?” Liam rose and came to stand next to me “Is everything alright?”

I barely heard him. My mind was focused on the news I had just been told now. If Lily was going to shift, it would mean a ton of things for me. I needed to be there... she would need me once she finally took her wolf form. I must be there.

“My apologies,” I said quietly “An urgent matter just came up that requires my attention now. I need to leave but, in my place, my Beta – Liam would continue the meeting.”

Liam was surprised but quickly masked his surprise by nodding in agreement while Gregory was staring at me suspiciously. Without waiting for their response or refusal, I strode to the door, fighting the urge not to run because of the stares on my back.

I slammed the door behind me, gritting my teeth against the pouring rain but that wasn’t going to stop me now, not when I had the highest chance of finally uniting with my mate before the end of today.

Taking a deep breath, I shifted into my wolf form, ignoring the surprised looks on the guards outside the cottage, taking shade. I flexed my muscles, readying myself... the run from the cottage to Celeste’s house was quite far but hell... I would run to the end of the earth if Lily was there.

I jumped into the raging storm. At that moment, everything else ceased to matter. All the plans about cornering Alpha Gregory and finding out the truth about Lily’s inability to shift, including why he wanted her killed were nothing more than a distant memory. As I pounded into the soft ground, my large paws marking its footprint in the soft earth, all I could think of was Lily finally shifting.

Thunder and lightning clapped above me but I barely noticed as I continued running. I could feel my wolf – Hud, urging me on, howling with excitement.

“Our mate!” he chanted “She’s awakening. I can feel her!”

The words seemed to spur me on. Desire, warmth, and the need to be near, to be loved, filled my heart as I pushed myself harder, the fastest I’d ever run before. Trees blurred past me, I leapt over wide ditches, and adrenaline was pumping into every single cell of my body. At that moment, I felt like I could fly if I tried.

Usually, a wet fur meant going slow, but mine felt like a propeller. I continued running until the roof of Celeste’s house came into view. My heart pounded with excitement and anxiety as I neared the house. I was finally, going to be with my mate. I wondered if she would recognize me now if we would finally consummate our bond. The thought of that alone sent warm thrills through me and made the lower part of my body move with excitement.

Finally, I arrived at the house.

Every inch of my body was soaked. I shifted as soon as I walked through the patio and I wasn’t surprised when I saw my sister, pacing. She didn’t say anything to me as she handed me dry clothes and a towel. I nodded to her, immediately shedding the wet ones as I walked through the house.

I finally got rid of the wet clothes and proceeded to dry my hair while taking the stairs three at a time as I walked up to Lily’s room. I could feel her presence... her sweet scent filling up my nostrils exciting me and my wolf.

All the irritation and anger her father had caused quickly dissipated and was replaced instead with warmth. When I reached the door, I paused for a second, smoothening my wet hair, adjusting my clothes and checking my breath. I didn’t want to startle my mate, all because I was excited.

Satisfied that I was okay, I pushed open the door, a smile on my face but the scene that greeted me as I looked inside the bedroom made me stop in my tracks.

There, sitting on the bed, with her eyes filled with emotions that I couldn’t place... But that wasn’t the problem, leaning over Lily, with his lips hovering over her, just a second away from kissing her... his hands were cupping her cheek, his thumb grazed her lips as he stared at her tenderly.

Lily closed her eyes, tilting her face to him, to give him better or maybe quicker access...

Something snapped inside me and all I could see at that point was red.

The room became smaller, all I could see at that moment was the man. I roared, the sound tearing from my throat... it was so powerful that the windows crackled and it echoed through the entire pack. Fury, rage, anger... were milder words compared to what was coursing inside of me. All I wanted to do at this moment was to tear the man apart.

The man, hearing my growl turned around, his eyes locking with mine first with shock and then with a hardened resolve. I saw his eyes flicker around my form as he planted his feet firmly, his hands shot out in front of him. He was getting ready to fight.

The stranger moved first, lunging at me, fists raised and balled into a blow as he lunged at me swinging wildly, his fist caught me on my shoulder, stunning me momentarily. I hadn’t anticipated that.

The stranger moved again, but I was quicker, I connected with his lower jaw driving my hand until I felt his bone snap. In retaliation, the stranger swung his leg wildly, catching me in my midriff, and knocking the air out of my lungs for a moment.

He swung again, his blows connecting with my jaws and rib but I barely registered pain as I grabbed him, driving another blow, in his stomach. He doubled, as blood spurted out of his mouth. The stranger managed to land another punch that split my lips.

My hands immediately went to my mouth. I saw blood and it only fueled my rage. I retaliated again, landing up an uppercut as I slammed my knees into his groin again quickly regaining the upper hand. I hurled him from the ground, grabbing him by his shirt, and his legs, making it impossible for him to swing wildly at me.

Without a moment’s hesitation, I flung him towards the bedroom window. His body shattered the glass as he flew out. I moved to follow him, every instinct in my body screaming for me to finish him. I was halfway out when a small sound caught my attention.

I turned in the direction of the sound, my chest heaving, my knuckles bloodied and my lips seeping blood. It was Lily.

She sat on the bed, her eyes wide and frightened, her knuckles had turned wild as she grabbed the sheets, looking helpless. The sight of her looking so small and fragile made the fight in my body disappear.

I took a deep calming breath before picking myself through the chaos to her bed. I sank into the space next to her, my eyes still on her. Now that the anger had cleared, I gauged her expression.

She was looking at me with what seemed to be shock or was it fear?
