Alpha's Hidden Precious Luna-Chapter 113
Lily POV
A few days later, I paced my dorm room. My mind was spinning with conflicting emotions. Every interaction with Kai over the last few days, plus what I have learnt some days ago through Celeste’s help, has left me feeling more alienated and uncertain.
The mysterious she-wolf had a hold on Kai for show and the revelation that she was being kept unconscious only made my curiosity grow. In reality, the chances of getting caught if I go to the hospital to give her the substance from the vial Celeste had given me was high, but the time for waiting was over—I needed answers.
After three hours of planning, I finally came up with a strategy. Picking up my phone, I my fingers trembled slightly as I dialed Kai’s number.
“Lily?” his voice was tense as he took the call, as if he was bracing himself for another confrontation.
“Hi, Kai,” I began, keeping my tone casual. “I know this sounds awkward and all, and you know me. I’m not the kind of person who will call you out of the blues and...”
“What’s wrong?” he cut me short.
“Well, the thing is, my period started a day earlier and I’m not prepared for it and I have cramps. I’ve reached out to all my friends, even to Celeste, but none of them is taking their calls and I was wondering if...”
“It’s fine,” he didn’t allow me to finish. “I’ll go to the store first and then come over to yours, okay?”
“Oh, really!” I feigned happiness. “Thank you so much, you’re a darling. I’ll be waiting for you.”
The moment the call ended, I sprang into action. I grabbed my bag, my car keys and the vial and dashed out of the dorm room. I had no time to waste. I went to where my car was parked. As soon as Kai reaches my house and realized I wasn’t there, I would text him to buy more time.
My heart pounded as I drove to the hospital, hands gripping the steering wheel so tight my knuckles turned white.
The afternoon sun cast long shadows across the parking lot of the hospital as I pulled in, trying to look as casual as possible while walking through the main entrance.
I kept my head down to avoid drawing attention. The familiar corridors of the hospital stretched before me, punctuated occasionally by the sound of beeping machines. I took the elevator to the VIP suite, praying that I won’t run into any doctor or nurse on duty.
When I arrived, the VIP Wing was surprisingly quiet. I had memorized the rotation schedules over the past few days. I knew the nurses would be having their afternoon meeting now. My footsteps echoed in the empty hallways as I approached the room meant for Kai.
Thankfully, there were no CCTV cameras on this floor, so I had no worries. I paused outside the door, my pulse racing. After a quick glance around to ensure no one was watching, I turned the handle and stepped inside.
The soft hum of medical equipment filled the air, and someone had drawn the curtains in the room. The she-wolf lay still on the hospital bed, various monitors beeping softly around her. Her face was pale, framed by tangled strands of hair. I quickly locked the door, my hands shaking as I pulled out Celeste’s vial. The liquid seemed to glow faintly in the fluorescent lightning.
Taking a deep breath, I approached the bed, trying to steady my hand. Carefully, I perched on the edge of the bed, removing the stopper from the vial. Her face was peaceful in unconsciousness and I couldn’t help but wonder what memories lay trapped behind those closed eyelids. Maybe memories of Kia, of their life together, of whatever had led to this desperate situation.
She was also beautiful. The kind of Vanessa’s beauty, fragile like a flower—the kind of women men go to war for. Shaking my head to expel the feeling, I steadied my hand.
“I need to know the truth,” I whispered, tilting the vial slightly towards her mouth. One drop, that’s all it would take to unravel everything.
With my free hand, I parted her lips... just as the liquid began to slide toward the edge, a voice cut through the silence.
“What are you doing here?”
I froze, the vial slipping slightly in my grasp as cold dread washed over me. My head whipped around to see Kai standing in the doorway. His expression was a mix of shock and anger.
“Kai!” I stammered, my mind racing to come up with an explanation. Quickly, I corked the vial and slipped it into my pocket, but I knew Kai had caught me.
“What is this?” Kai demanded, moving towards me. He had entered the room from an adjoining room on the side. His eyes narrowed, flicking between me and the unconscious she-wolf. “Why are you here, and what were you about to do? You said you had cramps...”
“I...” I struggled to find the right words. I had anticipated many outcomes for my plan. A nurse suddenly barging in or a doctor—that I could have handled easily. But being caught red-handed by Kai was not one of them.
“Aren’t you supposed to be at my house?” I asked, hoping I could flip the situation.
“I couldn’t come. Mia needs me here, so I sent an Omega from the pack house to you. Didn’t you get my text?” he queried.
I scoffed. “Is that how little I mean to you? You couldn’t spare a few minutes to come through for me...”
“That’s not what I am asking you, Lily!” he growled, stalking over to where I was. “Answer me, goddamit! What are you doing here?”
I lifted my chin. “I needed to know the truth,” I finally blurted out, my fists clenched at my sides. “You’ve been keeping a lot of secrets, Kai. Everyone has. I thought if I could wake her up, maybe I’d finally get some answers!”
Kai’s jaw tightened, and he ran a hand through his hair. “Do you have any idea what you’re messing with? She’s not just some puzzle you can solve, Lily.”
“Then tell me!” I shot back, my voice rising. “Because all I see is you obsessing over her while I’m left in the dark. Do you know how that feels?”
“For fuck’s sake!” he groaned out in frustration. “We’ve been over this again and again and again. I know it’s been hard, Lily, but I am trying to figure things out, too. Waking her up isn’t the answer. You could’ve endangered yourself or her by interfering.”
I took a step closer to him. “How can you ask me to trust you when you won’t trust me with the truth? You said you’d explain everything, but all you’ve done is push me further away.”
He sighed heavily, his gaze softening for the first time since he saw me in the room. “You’re right. I’ve been keeping things from you, and for that, I’m sorry. But some truths aren’t simple, Lily. This... this is complicated.”
My voice softened as my anger abated, giving way to a deep ache. “I can handle complicated, Kai. What I can’t handle is feeling like I’m not enough for you.”
“Not this again, Lily!” he snapped. “Not this again. How many times do I have to tell you I love and I choose you for you to understand it? Can’t you just make do with now? It’s not like I’m purposely...”
A faint groan interrupted us. We turned immediately toward the bed to see the she-wolf’s fingers twitching slightly.
“She’s waking up,” Kai muttered and immediately crossed over to the bed and pressed the dark red button.
