Chapter 106: Chapter 106

Lucas POV

I leaned back in my chair in the spacious Alpha office, which I was gradually claiming as my own.

Thankfully, Alpha Gregory preferred to womanize, wine and dine these days and was barely paying attention to any pack activities going on. I drummed my fingers against the polished oak desk staring at the intelligent reports spread out in front of me.

Some weeks back, I had decided that I would take charge over the security room. I had done it mainly to look out for Lily since I discovered that someone was supplying information about her to Alpha Gregory.

Now, the reports were scattered before me – evidence of how close disaster had come. My heart still raced when I thought about it. Lily. My Lily. Had come so close to losing her life all on Alpha Gregory’s orders.

I had acted on instinct. I had posed as Alpha Gregory, using the same means he uses to communicate with his contact from Royal Hunters pack. I immediately sent out a counter order.

Capture, don’t kill

Thankfully, the kidnapping had not gone through either and she was alive.

I had to protect Lily. I didn’t know what means Alpha Gregory might used next but I am determined to make sure Lily’s life would be intact at the end of the day.

And the only way to do that is to understand all of this. I need to be able to know the animosity, Alpha Gregory had against Lily to the extent that he insisted she should be killed. I wanted to understand the beef.

So, today, I was going to try again. Though these past few months, I’ve been able to coin Vanessa into giving me information about Lily. Although she was fond of giving me in bits, I decided I was going to try again today.

There was a small knock on the door of my office before it was opened slowly. When I looked up, it was Vanessa. She was dressed in a simple slip that  left nothing to one’s imagination.

“Hey babe!” I called out warmly. “Please come in.”

She nodded and crossed the room to my talbe where she sat on one of the chairs by the table.

“Coffee, Tea? Wine? Alcohol?’

“Wine!” she answered quietly.

I rose to my feet to get her wine and returned a while later with a bottle of wine and a glass. After pouring the wine, I returned to my seat. She was staring at me while her perfectly manicured nails tapped against the rim of the wine glass.

“Why have you asked me to come to your office in the middle of a working day? You never do that. Couldn’t whatever you wanted to tell me wait until evening?”

There was no need to pretend that I wanted to see her just because... she already knew something was up.

“So,” she continued, swirling the wine in her glass, took a sip before studying me over the rim. “You seem preoccupied.”

“I have a lot in my mind,” I replied leaning forward and resting my elbows on the desk. “The pack has been ... turbulent lately. Too many unanswered questions, too many threats.”

She arched a brow. “It has always been like this, you’ll be the Alpha someday, you should get used to it because it’s your job to keep everything under control.”

Her tone was light, but I knew she was edgy. I forced a smile. “True. And I’m doing that. But I need your help, Vanessa. There are things I still don’t know – things about the past that could affect the future of this pack.”

She tilted her head, feigning innocence. “And what makes you think I can help?”

“Because you know how these things work. Your father is the Alpha and you’ve seen things and heard things. So, you must know more about Lily than you let on.”

At the mention of Lily’s name, her demeanor changed. Her grip on the glass tightened, and her gaze darkened.

“What do you want to know about her again?” she asked, her voice was colder now.

“Everything,” I said simply.

She laughed, producing a humorless sound. “Why are you so obsessed with her? Even now, after all these months, you can’t stop thinking about her.”

“I am only obsessed with her because you and your father is. There is something you’re not telling me.”

“Something like what?” she was on the edge of hysterics. “I am your mate, Lucas. You offend me anytime you bring up the memory of your ex-mate. It hurts me so much.”

I sighed pinching the bridge of my nose. “Listen to me, Nessa. This is about the pack. There are just too many secrets surrounding Liuly, and they’re starting to unravel. I need to know the truth before it’s too late.”

For a moment, she didn’t respond. She stared at her glass as if she was searching for the answers in the swirling liquid. Finally, she set the glas gown and met my gaze.

“Fine,” she said. “You want to know the truth? Here it is: Lily is the reason my mother died.”

I blinked, taken aback. “What?”

Vanessa’s lips pressed into a thin line. “She’s from a cursed family and her presence brings misfortune to those around her.”

I felt a chill run down my spine. “Cursed?” I repeated, struggling to process her words.

“Yes,” Vanessa nodded but doesn’t provide any other information.

I leaned back in my chair, my mind racing. Could it be true? Was Lily really cursed? Or was this just another lie crafted by Alpha Gregory to justify his cruelty?

“And what about her father?” I pressed. “If Alpha Gregory isn’t her biological father, who is?”

Her eyes narrowed. “I don’t know.”

“C’mon, Nessa,” I tried to be sweet. “Tell me more.”

She shook her head. “I can’t. My father never told me. All is know is that, my father has always been determined to keep her under his control. That’s all I know.”

I studied Vanessa carefully, searching for any sign that she was lying. But her expression was a mix of bitterniess and something else – something that looked almost like fear.

“You’re holding back,” I said finally.

Her head snapped up. “What?”

“There’s more to this story, isn’t there?” I leaned forward. “You know more than you’re telling me, more than you’ve just told me.”

She rose to her feet. “I’ve told you everything, I know,” she said in a defensive tone.

“Have you?” I countered, standing as well. “Or are you still trying to protect your father’s secrets? Because if you are, Vanessa, you’re only putting yourself – and this pack – in danger.”

She clenched her fists at her sides. For a moment, it looked like she might say something more, but then she turned and walked to the door.

“You want to know the truth, Lucas?” she threw over her shoulder. “Figure it out yourself. But don’t come crying to me when you don’t like what you find.”

With that, she stormed out.

The only way to protect Lily as far as I could see right now is to become the Alpha as quickly and soon as possible.
