After Rebirth: The Alpha Ex-Husband Is Addicted to Me-Chapter 205: I’m Pregnant (Part 9)
The police were under immense pressure, and at this time, news broke of the perpetrator’s confession.
It was a man in his forties who claimed to be a patient of Lucy’s. He had gone to the neurosurgery department due to brain cancer, and after reviewing his test results, Lucy told him he couldn’t undergo surgery and rejected him, advising him to go home for conservative treatment. To him, it felt like a death sentence. Harboring resentment, he learned that due to maintenance work that day, the traffic lights on that street had the entire power supply shut off. He secretly went to the hospital, turned off the surveillance above Lucy’s car, picked the lock, hid in the back seat, and damaged the car’s auto-recording equipment.
Then he shot her multiple times in the legs. Once she was incapacitated and unconscious, he wrapped her up and took her to the seaside in a van.
The gun was a relic from his great-grandfather’s wartime days, which he had modified himself into a silenced gun.
The investigation into this case was very transparent. Nathaniel Green worked with the police to retrieve the hospital’s surveillance footage and record files. They found that this man in his forties had indeed been to the consultation and had been rejected for surgery by Lucy. According to Michael Paxton, his condition truly couldn’t be operated on; skipping surgery would allow him to live longer, while surgery carried an eighty percent chance of death on the table, with poor outcomes otherwise.
Later, the police investigated the man’s van route on the night of the incident and found that he indeed went to Earshore.
Various pieces of evidence indicated he was indeed the perpetrator.
The police submitted the case to the prosecutor’s office, which issued an announcement urging acceleration of the case due to its egregious nature.
Thus, within just a week, the perpetrator was sentenced to death, with no suspension, executed immediately.
Though it seemed like the matter had passed, for those who loved Lucy, it would never be over.
Her car was still there, her phone was still there, the jade pendant bracelet she often wore was left behind, and her Fire Meteor Blade wasn’t taken. She left without a word, cleanly and completely, taking nothing but herself.
John Green and Mia Townsend had returned to the country since the incident with Lucy and had stayed for a month. Now that there was a resolution, they were supposed to return to Country M.
Before leaving, John Green was still worried about his brother.
It’s been seven days, Jacob Green locked himself in his bedroom and hasn’t taken a step outside, barely eating.
Watching him grow thinner by the day, John Green sighed and went to sit next to Jacob squatting by the bed, "If Lucy were here, she wouldn’t want to see you like this. She’s gone, and you must live well. You need to honor her parents in her stead. The Prime Minister only has her as his biological daughter, right? Her parents still need your comfort. If you continue like this, what will happen to them? Whom can they rely on?"
This struck a chord with Jacob, and he raised his head, his voice hoarse, "Brother, I’ll pull myself together."
Hearing this, John Green breathed a sigh of relief, "Your sister-in-law and I will return to Country M tomorrow. She’s been emotionally unstable, crying every other day, and hasn’t eaten much, causing malnutrition for the baby. We need to return and properly care for her pregnancy."
"Okay, I’ll ask Nathaniel to arrange a flight for tomorrow."
No more words were needed between brothers. After John Green left, Jacob got up and went to the bathroom.
He showered, shaved, changed clothes, and took a flight out.
Nathaniel sat next to him, watching him gaze out the window, lost in thought.
"Young Master... there’s something I need to tell you."
"Speak." 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶
"The police department’s household registration office called, saying we should bring the household registration booklet to the office to register her death and cancel Young Madam’s household file."
"What if we don’t cancel it?"
"It’s illegal. If only we internally knew about Young Madam’s absence, not canceling it would keep it undisclosed. However, now that everyone knows, the police department’s household registration office and the news media will inevitably pay attention."
"If it’s canceled, what happens to the marital status section?"
"The marital status..." Nathaniel hesitated, "It will be changed to ’widowed’, and the marital relationship will be automatically terminated due to one party’s death, with no formalities required. Your and Young Madam’s marital relationship will no longer exist."
"Nathaniel, we have so many people at Blossom Haven, yet I didn’t assign her a bodyguard just because she didn’t like anyone following her everywhere. Do you think I was very foolish?"
Nathaniel’s eyes turned red, "Young Master, you weren’t foolish. You just loved Young Madam too much and therefore complied with her in everything."
"I believed too much in her self-defense skills, but she’s also human, and humans are bound to have lapses." Jacob choked up, "Getting hit by so many bullets in the legs must have been very painful."
Nathaniel lowered his eyes, feeling deeply distressed.
When they arrived at the Prime Minister’s Mansion, they learned that Liora Hughes had been unwell for several days and had been on an IV drip. Jacob went with his father-in-law to visit her; she looked very unwell, devoid of the vitality she once had.
"Mom, how’s your health?"
"You’re here, I’m fine." Liora Hughes slowly sat up, "No need to worry."
Jacob didn’t know how to comfort her, "Even though Lucy is gone, you still have me. From now on, I’ll be your son."
Tears welled up in Liora’s eyes as she nodded, "Good child, it was our Lucy who was unfortunate, leaving us so young."
——
"Truly heaven-sent." Stellan Quinn repeated this phrase dozens of times yet never tired of it, "Her death was rather timely, Lucy really died remarkably well."
Grace Hughes chuckled as she sliced an orange, "Alright, she’s dead, what’s the point of bringing her up."
"We had thought of leveraging my growing belly and using the child as a bargaining chip with Your Highness, but now it’s unnecessary." Stellan Quinn glanced at the single line on the pregnancy test, "Not being pregnant suits me perfectly. If I had been, I would have had to abort it, and it would’ve been my suffering."
Hearing this, Grace Hughes frowned and asked, "You don’t love Your Highness, do you? I thought you were completely infatuated."
"What I love is his power, if anything." Stellan Quinn didn’t hide her true thoughts, "I approached him with a purpose from the beginning. How could I possibly love him?"
"Then you wouldn’t..." Grace Hughes was unsure, "Still like Jacob Green, would you?"
Stellan Quinn didn’t deny or confirm, "We can’t be together, I’ve long accepted that fact. Now that Lucy is dead, there’s no need for further schemes. I plan to expatriate next."
"What are you going abroad for?"
"Of course, to find a reliable, wealthy man to marry, raise children, and live a good life."
Grace Hughes was taken aback by her plan, "You intend to settle down, but wouldn’t foreign wealthy men know about your past from the news back home?"
"Fool, I’ll surely assume a new identity, tweak my face, and fix it up. You see, the cleaner a woman’s private life, the more chances she has to marry into a prestigious family." Stellan Quinn smiled wryly, "If I settle abroad, how often would I return? Netizens have short memories; over time, who would still follow me? Nobody will care where Stellan Quinn has gone."
