After Rebirth, I Married the Great Demon King-Chapter 468: Feeding the Dog
Yun Shifei thought, Xu Yuejiao truly sacrificed so much for her love.
To be so devoted to someone she cherished—luckily, she had heard that Zhou Li was a relatively reliable person, someone who held himself accountable to Xu Yuejiao. Otherwise, she’d be worried that Xu Yuejiao might endure the same hardships Yun Shifei had in her previous life.
Xu Yuejiao wanted to accompany Zhou Li here, and Yun Shifei couldn’t stop her. She gave her a bit of allowance, fearing Xu Yuejiao might not have enough money to spend. With a wave goodbye, Yun Shifei boarded the plane back to South City.
Xu Yuejiao sniffled. She missed home too—this place was cold, and she’d certainly be exhausted when she started working at the factory in a few days.
The factory was just an ordinary food production plant, but she had gone to great lengths to find out that Zhou Li was working there, so without hesitation, she followed him.
However, she didn’t dare tell Zhou Li. If he found out she was there too, he would surely be angry.
Although their relationship wasn’t as tense as it used to be, every time she tried to talk to Zhou Li, he would greet her with a cold expression.
Shi Fei had told her that he wouldn’t appreciate her discovering his financial struggles.
So she decided to keep herself hidden. If Zhou Li saw her working in the factory alongside him, he’d surely feel embarrassed.
This food factory produced canned fruits, operating like an assembly line.
In fact, such factories were very popular. Normally, Xu Yuejiao wouldn’t even have gotten a chance to do a winter break job here. It was only because the factory needed to rush production for the New Year that they temporarily hired a batch of workers. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞
Moreover, the factory specifically hired university students on break, which was how it all aligned perfectly.
Another of Xu Yuejiao’s roommates also got the job, saying it was a way to earn some money to take home for the New Year.
They stayed directly in the factory’s dormitory—an eight-person accommodation that felt far more cramped compared to their university housing.
Initially, Xu Yuejiao wasn’t used to it at all and even considered staying elsewhere. But thinking of Zhou Li, she decided to stay.
She reassured herself—enduring a bit of hardship could make her love appear even more genuine.
Unexpectedly, Xu Yuejiao hadn’t encountered Zhou Li yet but bumped into Ming Jingru.
Ming Jingru was stunned to see her: "You’re here?"
"You’re here?" Xu Yuejiao retorted.
Ming Jingru had always competed with her for Zhou Li’s affection, and unfortunately, Zhou Li seemed to treat Ming Jingru better than he did her.
So while Xu Yuejiao kept her eyes on Zhou Li, she had also become very familiar with Ming Jingru.
Seeing Ming Jingru there genuinely surprised Xu Yuejiao.
In her impression, Ming Jingru dressed elegantly and carried herself with grace, resembling a genteel young lady. How could someone like her end up working here?
Could it be...?
Caught under Xu Yuejiao’s blatant gaze, Ming Jingru blushed slightly before speaking after a moment’s pause: "I’m here to experience life."
"Experience life?" Xu Yuejiao thought that was quite a convenient excuse, so she replied, "I’m here to experience life too."
"Looks like we’re the same." Ming Jingru muttered awkwardly, still slightly unsettled. After all, she hadn’t expected to run into someone familiar here.
She even felt that Xu Yuejiao repeating her words was mocking her.
Clenching her teeth, she shot an angry glance at Xu Yuejiao but couldn’t think of a retort, opting instead to turn and leave.
Watching Ming Jingru’s departing figure, Xu Yuejiao frowned. She didn’t believe Ming Jingru’s excuse at all. Of course, she was here because she knew Zhou Li was working here!
With that thought, Xu Yuejiao resolved to work hard—Ming Jingru didn’t seem nearly as capable as she did.
Since she couldn’t surpass Ming Jingru in terms of appearance, she decided to rely on her abilities!
Yet, after just one day, Xu Yuejiao began doubting herself. Why did she seem so incapable of handling the work?
Her task on the production line was to package the canned goods.
She had to place lids onto the cans—these metal lids felt rather difficult to open even when she ate canned food normally, let alone trying to seal them shut.
If the lid wasn’t sealed properly, she had to redo it, requiring significant effort. By the end of the day, her hands were unbearably sore.
And this was just the first day—every following day would consist of the same repetitive task.
Just the thought of it left Xu Yuejiao feeling miserable.
As she put down her aching arms, Ming Jingru approached, smiling as she looked at her: "Can’t handle it already? You might as well go home and rest early."
Her task was much simpler—she merely had to pour syrup into the fruit cans, place them onto the machine, and add water.
Xu Yuejiao frowned and bit her lip before replying firmly, "I can do this."
Counting the days, it would only be just over half a month. Since she was determined to experience life, there was no reason to give up so easily. Her cousin would surely mock her if she did.
But Yun Shifei felt unfairly implicated—she couldn’t bear to see Xu Yuejiao suffer and wished she’d just go back home.
Still, Xu Yuejiao gritted her teeth and persevered for three days.
During these three days, she secretly searched for Zhou Li.
The factory wasn’t too big nor too small; eventually, she managed to find him at the cafeteria.
He was chatting and laughing with someone about his age, his handsome and bright demeanor enough to captivate anyone’s heart.
Hiding in the corner, Xu Yuejiao watched him silently. When Zhou Li noticed someone staring at him and turned to follow their gaze, Xu Yuejiao immediately turned away.
Wearing the same uniform as every other worker, there was no chance Zhou Li would recognize her.
Xu Yuejiao feared she’d anger Zhou Li again.
Zhou Li caught sight of her retreating figure and frowned slightly—this silhouette seemed familiar.
"Zhou Li, finish your meal quickly. We need to get back to work soon."
"Alright." Zhou Li nodded.
The factory food was decent, but Zhou Li remembered his chronically ill father at home and couldn’t bring himself to eat the meat. Quietly, he saved it, planning to bike home after each shift to bring it back for his parents.
This continued for several days in a row.
Soon, Xu Yuejiao noticed it too.
Sitting some distance away, she observed Zhou Li during mealtime.
She saw that despite the meat on his plate, he never touched it, eating only vegetables and steamed buns instead.
This habit explained his thin frame.
After finishing his meal, he would stash the meat into a bag. Xu Yuejiao found it perplexing but couldn’t figure out where Zhou Li was taking it, as they worked in separate workshops.
Xu Yuejiao was an intensely curious person, especially when it came to her heart’s desire.
Unable to follow him herself, she asked Ming Jingru about it, knowing they worked in the same workshop.
Hearing her question, Ming Jingru chuckled: "Oh, that meat? Zhou Li uses it to feed the dogs."
"Feed the dogs?" Xu Yuejiao frowned.
"Yes, there’s a small dog in the backyard, and Zhou Li likes it very much. So, he saves his meat to feed the dog."
