After Rebirth, I Married the Great Demon King-Chapter 458 Are You Here Too?
As soon as the scream ended, Wen Lin knew she was finished.
She wasn’t far from the place she had just escaped, so it didn’t take long before she heard sounds from the thicket—rustling noises much louder than what small animals typically made.
They must have heard it. Now they’re coming in her direction, aren’t they? What should she do!
The more Wen Lin thought about it, the more terrified she became. Without even standing up properly, she frantically bolted downhill.
She understood that these people were ultimately after money. Even if she were caught again, they might release her as long as they got paid.
But still, Wen Lin wanted to make her own effort to escape—it would be such an awesome story to tell later.
Even at a time like this, Wen Lin couldn’t forget how to craft her image.
Unfortunately, despite having kicked off her high heels to run, the uneven terrain began taking its toll. Before long, her feet started hurting.
Her expertise was in business, where mental acuity mattered; physical endurance, however, was not her strong suit. Wen Lin admitted to herself that she was seriously lacking in this aspect.
Probably because she rarely exercised.
And so, in just a short while, she found herself surrounded by three men.
"Miss Wen, where do you think you’re running off to?" Brother Hai’s menacing face glared at Wen Lin.
A stark contrast to his demeanor moments earlier in front of Yun Shifei.
Just before, Yun Shifei had looked so obedient and pitiful that they only kidnapped her as a side note. Even Brother Hai felt somewhat guilty about it.
But Wen Lin? She was the real target of this operation, and yet she dared to try running away.
Brother Hai held a knife in his hand, letting it glint ominously in the moonlight as he waved it around.
Wen Lin’s face turned deathly pale.
"I’m the eldest daughter of the Wen Family—you can’t hurt me," Wen Lin said coldly.
Brother Hai sneered, "The eldest daughter of the Wen Family? So what? Even if I chop off one of your fingers, don’t you think the Wen Family would still pay the ransom to get you back?"
Wen Lin nearly fainted at his words.
Although she had always been tough and appeared the epitome of a strong woman, she had never experienced anything like this—a life-or-death ordeal. Her thoughts wandered to their neighbor’s child, who had been kidnapped in the past. The once bright and cheerful boy became withdrawn and taciturn, completely uninterested in taking over his father’s business.
Back then, Wen Lin thought it was exaggerated. After all, he hadn’t gone through much—he’d returned unharmed. Why the drastic change?
At that time, she even imagined that if she were kidnapped, she’d surely remain calm and negotiate with the criminals.
But now, she couldn’t help but think about that neighbor’s child. If it were her, could she really promise that after experiencing this, she wouldn’t undergo an attitude shift?
Right now, her legs were already weak from terror.
She knew her earlier attempt to escape had angered them.
"How much money do you want? I’ll have my grandfather pay you double," Wen Lin said.
Double—they should find this enticing enough, right?
Sure enough, the three men exchanged glances upon hearing Wen Lin’s offer, greed flashing in their eyes.
"Alright, Miss Wen, that’s very generous of you. Then make the call to your grandfather now."
They hadn’t yet had the chance to negotiate terms with the Wen Family, but that didn’t matter—the Wen Family would have been in a frenzy of confusion during Wen Lin’s disappearance over the past few hours.
Wen Lin gritted her teeth and reluctantly took the phone.
Fine. Money could be earned back later, but if she lost her life, everything would truly be over.
Wen Lin was definitely someone who cherished her life.
As she was about to dial, several figures suddenly sprang from the shadows, swiftly overpowering the three kidnappers and pressing them to the ground.
Brother Hai was shocked. They had picked a mountain that was highly secluded and supposedly safe—how had someone still tracked them down?
And it had only been a few hours since the abduction.
He struggled to resist, but the person restraining him was clearly well-trained and adept at combat. Though Brother Hai was burly and accustomed to physical exertion, he found himself utterly immobilized.
Moments later, he heard the sound of footsteps drawing nearer, stopping right in front of him.
"Are you the one who kidnapped her?"
Brother Hai didn’t grasp what was happening and replied, "What?"
Could it be someone from the Wen Family? Damn, the Wen Family’s speed was terrifying.
But as he questioned, the man before him remained silent, as if tacitly admitting it—indicating that everything done had indeed been Brother Hai’s responsibility.
The earlier question seemed merely a courtesy.
He forced himself to lift his eyes and took in the sight of the imperious man before him.
Bathed in cold moonlight, his back radiated an icy silver glow. Dressed entirely in black and with his face obscured by shadows, the man nonetheless exuded an air of sharp ruthlessness and murderous intent.
Brother Hai, who had grown accustomed to bloodshed, felt an involuntary wave of fear.
A man steeped in cruelty will inevitably fear someone even crueler.
Before he could say another word, the man stepped forward and stomped on Brother Hai’s hand, crushing it ruthlessly.
The excruciating sensation of shattering bones caused Brother Hai, a grown man, to cry out in pain.
"Boss, I know I was wrong! Please spare me! I was just after some money—I didn’t hurt them!"
Cheng Lie, however, pressed his lips into a thin line and crushed the kidnapper’s fingers completely.
If Zhao Pan hadn’t constantly signaled to him that Yun Shifei was nearby and unharmed, Cheng Lie might have torn the man apart in his uncontainable fury.
That said, Cheng Lie refrained from lingering on the matter. He didn’t want Yun Shifei to witness an overly brutal scene.
While she understood him, and wasn’t afraid of him, he didn’t want her to be haunted by nightmares.
So Cheng Lie merely shattered Brother Hai’s hand, rendering him unable to commit such crimes again, and instructed Zhao Pan to handle the trio accordingly.
Then, he made his way upward to find Yun Shifei.
Wen Lin stood aside in a daze. From the moment Cheng Lie appeared and dealt with the kidnappers, her heart had been pounding wildly.
She hadn’t expected the classic "hero rescuing the damsel in distress" scenario to play out before her—and the hero happened to be the man she liked.
Wen Lin had considered the possibility of her feelings for Cheng Lie fading with time.
But now, it seemed highly unlikely.
She liked Cheng Lie so much. In moments like now, it felt as though her heart was beating solely for him.
Yet Cheng Lie didn’t spare her a single glance as he strode purposefully uphill.
It was because of Yun Shifei—he was here to find Yun Shifei!
Wen Lin couldn’t help but follow after him.
As she walked, she called out to Cheng Lie, "Cheng Lie, I was scared to death. Thank goodness you showed up."
Hearing Wen Lin’s words, Cheng Lie seemed to come back to his senses. He glanced at her. "You’re here too?"
