After Rebirth, I Married the Great Demon King-Chapter 376 Innocent
Yun Shifei asked Cheng Lie, "Feeling better now?"
Cheng Lie nodded.
Yun Shifei studied him for a moment and noticed that his complexion indeed looked much better than before. She let out a sigh of relief.
Then she asked him again, "Do you want to go downstairs for a walk? You’ve been cooped up here for days. You must be feeling stifled, right?"
Since Cheng Lie’s illness was psychological, taking a walk downstairs and enjoying the scenery was actually a kind of relief.
"Okay." Cheng Lie agreed.
But after a while, the nurse came in to change his dressing. Yun Shifei stood by, watching.
The only wounds on Cheng Lie’s body were on his hands.
But just the sight of the cuts on his hands made Yun Shifei’s heart ache deeply.
Before, she’d only seen Cheng Lie’s hands tightly wrapped in layers of gauze. Now, as the gauze was removed, the scars became visible.
Fine, densely packed cuts, varying in size and depth, were etched across his hands. Just looking at them was startling and painful—it must have hurt terribly.
These were hands gifted with exceptional talent in painting, capable of creating masterpieces. Yet, now they bore these countless scars.
Yun Shifei didn’t know how Cheng Lie had ended up like this. Her face was full of worry.
Noticing her expression, Cheng Lie smiled faintly, "Don’t worry, it doesn’t hurt anymore."
"How could it not hurt?"
If she had just one small cut on her hand, she would find it excruciating. How could Cheng Lie not feel pain?
Thinking of this, Yun Shifei felt a wave of frustration sweep over her. She was angry that Cheng Lie had been hurt like this—even if the wounds were self-inflicted, wasn’t it those people who provoked him? Just the thought of it made her furious.
After the nurse re-dressed Cheng Lie’s wounds and bandaged his hands again, Yun Shifei kept staring at them.
Seeing her fixated gaze, Cheng Lie held his hand out to her. "It really doesn’t hurt. I’m not afraid of pain."
Looking into his deep, dark eyes, Yun Shifei sighed, "From now on, no matter what happens, you’re not allowed to hurt yourself, understand?"
She knew Cheng Lie had bipolar disorder. When an episode hit, there was a chance he would harm himself repeatedly. But this was something that could be controlled.
Cheng Lie met her worried gaze and, after a long moment, nodded. "Okay."
Hearing his promise, Yun Shifei finally allowed herself to relax a little.
She knew Cheng Lie always kept his word. If he said he wouldn’t hurt himself, he definitely wouldn’t.
"Let’s go downstairs for that walk," she said.
Yun Shifei accompanied Cheng Lie for a stroll around the hospital grounds.
The hospital was large, with beautiful scenery. It really was a good place to recover.
Finally, the two sat on a bench nearby. Yun Shifei leaned on Cheng Lie’s shoulder and said, "When you get better, let’s go back to the amusement park."
That was where they had first created some of their fondest memories, so, of course, they needed to revisit it.
Cheng Lie gave a soft hum of agreement.
He turned his head. A gentle breeze carried the subtle fragrance from her hair to his nose.
It was a scent that calmed him.
He couldn’t help but lower his head and press a kiss to the crown of Yun Shifei’s hair.
He hoped this moment could last a little longer.
But unfortunately...
After learning the truth of everything, there were some things he must do. And once he did them, wouldn’t she become afraid of him?
She was so kind and pure. She would undoubtedly be terrified of the person he truly was.
Yun Shifei, completely oblivious at the moment, was still making plans. A couple of days after Cheng Lie was discharged, she wanted to take him out and help him relax.
She wasn’t afraid of his illness at all. After knowing Cheng Lie for so many years, she was convinced that the side of him she had seen was his truest self.
That evening, back at her apartment complex, Yun Shifei was about to open the door when Mu Chengzhu appeared out of nowhere and called out to her.
Yun Shifei turned and saw a visibly angry Mu Chengzhu.
It was rare for her to see him lose his temper, especially after he had learned about his past life. Since then, he had become more reserved, shrouded in layers of hidden emotions.
So to see Mu Chengzhu like this was a bit surprising for Yun Shifei.
"Are you playing me?"
In his hand, Mu Chengzhu was holding a plastic bag, which contained the sachet she had given him earlier.
Yun Shifei immediately understood what he meant, but she feigned ignorance. "What’s wrong? You don’t like it? If you don’t like it, just give it back to me."
She reached out to take it, but Mu Chengzhu pulled it away.
Looking at her innocent expression, Mu Chengzhu felt conflicted. Honestly, if he didn’t know how much Yun Shifei hated him, he might have been fooled by her act.
"I’m allergic." Mu Chengzhu emphasized the words deliberately.
Yun Shifei still wore a puzzled look. "You’re allergic? You look fine to me."
Mu Chengzhu thought back to his earlier allergic reaction. If he hadn’t gone to the hospital for treatment, how could he have recovered so quickly?
Yet this heartless woman still pretended to be innocent, as if she hadn’t instigated the whole thing.
"I got this from you, and I had an allergic reaction immediately."
Yun Shifei laughed upon hearing that and said, "Oh, I forgot—you’re allergic to peaches. I put a little dried peach in it."
The dried peach was mixed with various floral scents, masking its distinct peach aroma. So Mu Chengzhu had fallen into the trap without a hint of suspicion.
She could even argue that she had just thought peaches smelled nice and that adding a little was no big deal.
Mu Chengzhu realized that Yun Shifei was adamantly refusing to admit anything.
She was truly becoming more cunning.
However, this made him aware of one thing: in their past life, she had loved him so intensely that she understood him thoroughly. She remembered everything he liked and disliked with painstaking detail.
While there was little she could do to him in major matters, she could easily manipulate the finer details.
Mu Chengzhu understood that if Yun Shifei truly decided to strike, there would be endless opportunities for her to do so.
She was relying on one thing: the fact that he liked her.
Just like now, even though he was allergic to the sachet, he couldn’t bring himself to return it to her.
At this moment, Mu Chengzhu felt pathetic. The person who liked him, he didn’t care for. And the one he liked, he was desperate for her to care about him.
Did Yun Shifei have a point? Was his so-called "love" for her merely a desire to see her love him the way she did in their past life, rather than genuine affection?
Mu Chengzhu wasn’t sure himself anymore. But what he did know was that his attention toward Yun Shifei was growing.
Wasn’t this what love felt like?
Yun Shifei was waiting for Mu Chengzhu to lose his temper, waiting for him to walk away disappointed.
But unexpectedly, though Mu Chengzhu was indeed angry, his temper came and went just as quickly, as if he’d suddenly reined it back in.
"Yun Shifei, do you really want to make a move against me?" He leaned in close, his voice low.
Yun Shifei instinctively took two steps back and looked at Mu Chengzhu. "What are you talking about?"
She was determined to maintain the air of someone who had done everything yet dared him to do anything about it.
What she didn’t expect, however, was that Mu Chengzhu seemed to no longer fall for her tricks.
He reached out, gripping her chin with such force that it made Yun Shifei wince in pain.
"Go ahead and try whatever tricks you have left. I want to see just how much chaos you can stir up."
