Chapter 165: Chapter 165: A Big Misunderstanding

Huh?

Her baby?

Confused, she turned to look at the sales associate.

Sales associates in a high-end mall like this were just like those at luxury brand counters—they all had incredibly sharp eyes. They were especially skilled at reading customers’ moods with remarkable precision.

The moment Jessie Sterling looked over with that bewildered expression, the sales associate immediately realized something was off.

’This doesn’t seem like the reaction of an expectant mother being complimented, does it?’

"You two are..." The sales associate was now confused as well.

Jessie Sterling burst out laughing. "My husband and I are buying things for my goddaughter."

Realization dawned on the sales associate. When she looked at Jessie again, her gaze seemed to grow even more fervent.

’If they’re this generous with a child who isn’t even their own, who knows how eye-opening their spending will be when they have their own baby!’

’If I can make a good impression on this young lady now, maybe she’ll remember me when she has some good news of her own soon.’

’How could the annual sales champion title possibly escape me then?’

Victor Morgan had heard the sales associate’s misunderstanding. It was just that Jessie had already explained before he could say anything.

Initially, Victor Morgan hadn’t thought much of this shopping trip. He disliked shopping, but since his wife wanted to go, he would naturally accompany Jessie. Now, however, Victor felt that coming out had been a good idea after all.

At the very least, he noticed that Jessie was completely captivated by all the little things for children.

Victor couldn’t help but wonder. ’Even if Jessie doesn’t like kids right now, she seems to love all the cute little clothes, utensils, and accessories for them. Could she be persuaded to want a child just for the sake of these tiny outfits and spoons?’

That evening, Jessie Sterling brought Victor Morgan along to Lynn Jennings’s current residence. The person who opened the door was Cyrus Sheridan.

Cyrus must have already heard from Lynn that they would be visiting, as he showed no surprise. Still wearing an apron, he welcomed them inside.

"Stay for a simple dinner tonight," Cyrus offered.

The fragrance of simmering soup filled the room, smelling wonderful.

Jessie had wanted to chat more with Lynn anyway, so she naturally agreed.

Lynn Jennings was sitting in the living room wearing loose loungewear, and she waved Jessie over.

"So, Mr. Sheridan can cook? I never would have guessed," Jessie said as she sat down next to Lynn.

As for Victor Morgan, he followed Cyrus into the kitchen.

Lynn looked at her friend with a half-smile. "Don’t tell me your President Morgan doesn’t know how to cook?"

She gestured with her chin toward the kitchen, where Victor was washing his hands and getting ready to help. Her meaning was clear.

Jessie cupped her face in her hands. "Well, if he didn’t go into the kitchen, he couldn’t just sit here and eavesdrop on our private conversation, could he?"

Lynn was speechless. "..."

’That’s an explanation only Jessie could come up with.’

"How long are you planning to stay this time?" Lynn asked. If Jessie was going to be in Southaven, Lynn would definitely rearrange her schedule to spend time with her.

Jessie shook her head. "I was planning to take a week off, but you already know, don’t you? I have a collaboration with Cheryl Stuart’s team that can quickly solve my company’s current problem, so I’ll probably head straight back to Aethelburg tomorrow or the day after."

Lynn was a little surprised. The Jessie of the past was nothing like the workaholic she was now.

"Aren’t you tired?" Lynn asked.

She knew that Victor had bought Apex Films for Jessie in the first place because he was aware of the conflict between her and Arya Thorne. He bought it for Jessie to play around with, to clash with Arya, not necessarily expecting her to win—just to give her a way to annoy her rival.

But now, Jessie was clearly getting really into it.

"Not at all." Jessie hugged a throw pillow and leaned back on the sofa. "It’s actually pretty fun! And having something to do is so much better than being cooped up at home."

Wasn’t that the same reason she’d signed with that comics publisher before?

If you don’t have work, how can you truly appreciate the joy of going out and having fun?

Everything needs a point of comparison. It’s like sugar—it tastes even sweeter when you have salt to contrast it with.

Life also needs rich and varied layers.

Seeing Jessie’s eyes light up as she talked about work, Lynn felt relieved.

"Maybe you’ll even want to go back to your family’s bank eventually," Lynn said.

Jessie immediately shook her head. "No way, no way." She frowned, her expression one of utter resistance. "That would be so boring. At Apex Films, I can go hang out on set. At a bank, all you do is sit in an office or meet with clients. It’s too dull."

Even though it was all work, the nature of it was completely different, wasn’t it?

Lynn couldn’t help but chuckle.

Today’s dinner was the combined effort of two men who didn’t know each other well, Cyrus Sheridan and Victor Morgan.

Cyrus first served Lynn her meal—the special "pregnancy meal" he prepared for her daily, based on a strict nutritional plan.

Throughout the meal, Jessie kept raising her eyebrows suggestively at Lynn.

’A persistent man really can win over even the most resistant woman!’

’Of course, Lynn isn’t exactly a resistant woman—she’s a "Queen of the Sea"—but even a queen like her would find it hard to resist a man as vast and accommodating as the ocean, right?’

’And one who’s so attentive and thoughtful, too.’

"I don’t think it’ll be long before Cyrus becomes official," Jessie commented after they had eaten their fill at Lynn’s place. She didn’t stay long, having heard that pregnant women get very sleepy.

Victor felt a pang of mixed emotions. ’Look at Cyrus,’ he thought. ’He isn’t even official yet and he’s already having a kid. Meanwhile, I’m fully licensed and certified, but I still don’t have any ’paternal rights.’’

’Well, the right to be a father.’

Of course, Jessie had no idea about Victor’s inner monologue. After a long and busy day, she was feeling a bit tired herself.

Who knew that once they got home, Victor would be so full of energy? The moment they entered the third-floor bedroom, he swept Jessie up into his arms and carried her toward the bathroom.

When Jessie woke up the next day, the space beside her was empty.

Remembering Victor’s indulgence the previous night, Jessie’s face flushed.

She had no idea when Victor had restocked the empty little boxes on the nightstand. Last night, they had tried nearly every flavor.

Victor had even gotten up in the middle of the night to secretly change and wash the bedsheets himself. He was probably too embarrassed to have the housekeeper constantly cleaning up after them.

After returning to Aethelburg from Southaven, Jessie felt like time was flying by.

It felt like in the blink of an eye, the longest holiday of the first half of the year had come and gone in a blur.

She hadn’t rested much during the May Day holiday, either.

During the holiday, Cheryl Stuart, riding her recent wave of popularity, managed to overshadow all the trending topics about tourist crowds and claim the number one spot on the social media charts.
