After my divorce, I started to have good luck-Chapter 814 - 439: Uncle’s Romantic Entanglements
Based on what Zhao Xiaolan said, Chen Feng clearly misjudged the situation concerning his uncle and Mao Xiaoling.
The main issue is that he underestimated his uncle's level of devotion, or rather subservience. He really didn't expect Mao Xiaoling to treat him this way, not seeing him as family, and to not even register their marriage, yet his uncle Zhao Guozhong is still so compliant.
Furthermore, he overestimated his uncle's personal charm and the allure of half the profits from the small supermarket for Mao Xiaoling.
Initially, he had agreed that as long as Mao Xiaoling registered her marriage with his uncle, the couple would receive half of the supermarket's profits as dividends. Usually, under such conditions, other single mothers from the countryside, as long as the person is acceptable, would surely accept it. After all, half of the profits from the small supermarket would amount to at least hundreds of thousands a year, perhaps even more.
In the town, a family earning more than a hundred thousand a year is already living well.
However, it's clear that Mao Xiaoling is not just satisfied with this amount of money; she wants more, which understandably shows that she actually looks down on Yang Guozhong in her heart.
Otherwise, there's no way things would've dragged on this long without her registering her marriage with Yang Guozhong.
"Mom, what do you think we should do? Should we just follow through with what I said last time and break them up?"
Chen Feng was angry, but when it came to his uncle's emotional entanglements, he internally preferred not to get involved. He was honestly too disappointed in his uncle.
As a man, he despised his uncle's subservient behavior the most. Moreover, he had already advised his uncle to toughen up last time. He even made him the manager of the small supermarket, the nominal second boss.
That way, the mother and daughter of Mao Xiaoling still nominally worked under his uncle.
But the result? Still, Mao Xiaoling had a tight grip on him.
It really seemed to Chen Feng that his uncle was like mud that couldn't stick to the wall.
"I've already told your uncle to tell Mao Xiaoling that they must register their marriage within two days. If not, they have to break up, and he needs to resign from the supermarket job."
"What did uncle say?" Chen Feng asked.
"Your uncle agreed. He also wants to register the marriage with Mao Xiaoling quickly, to at least solidify the name of being her husband. But Mao Xiaoling has always been dragging her feet, and there's nothing he can do. Now that I'm stepping in as his sister to push things, he can legitimately pressure Mao Xiaoling."
Chen Feng frowned and said, "A forced marriage isn't sweet. If uncle is so easily controlled by this woman, he'd never succeed in life."
Zhao Xiaolan sighed and said, "You know what your uncle is like, right? He's never been a steady person. Even if Mao Xiaoling isn't great, at least she can keep him in check. If she can register the marriage with your uncle this time, they can still live a good life together, and she can keep him under control, which is not bad. Some other women might not be able to manage your uncle."
That was true. His uncle was still immature, lazy, liked to boast, and wanted face without real achievements. At his age, not many women would want or manage him.
It was just because he had a bit of money now and was nominally a shareholder of a car wash and a small supermarket that Mao Xiaoling maintained the relationship with him.
"Alright, then. You handle this. As for uncle's matters, I'm honestly tired of dealing with them. He is an elder, and as his nephew, I've done what I could."
Chen Feng was indeed reluctant to further involve himself in his uncle's affairs. If it weren't for his mother, he wouldn't even bother listening to these trivial matters involving his uncle.
Zhao Xiaolan wasn't unreasonable; she knew her son had done a lot for his uncle and could only sigh, "As a nephew, you've done right by your uncle. Mom knows. But since your grandparents passed away early, and now your uncle is all alone, as his sister, I can't ignore his lifelong matters. In the future, just for the sake of your mom, help him if you can. Consider it as helping your mom." 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞
What more could Chen Feng say to that? He could ignore his uncle, but he couldn't ignore his own mother.
At the very least, his mother gave birth to him and raised him, a kindness that he could never repay.
Of course, foolish filial piety is unacceptable, but is helping your mom's brother when she asks considered foolish filial piety? Certainly not.
"It still depends on uncle himself. If he's not firm and willingly lets that woman walk all over him, he can't be helped. Of course, mom, you're right too. Uncle really does need a woman who can keep him in line. Let's see what that woman chooses this time. If she still delays and doesn't plan to register the marriage with uncle, then it's better for him to break up with her sooner."
Even if she keeps him in check, if she doesn't truly care for uncle, what's the use of registering a marriage? If she continues to treat uncle like a dog or a free servant, she'll surely despise him when he gets old, and his later years would be miserable."
"Right, right, you're absolutely right. I hadn't thought of that. We can't let this happen." Zhao Xiaolan immediately said, "Let's give her one last chance. If she registers her marriage with your uncle tomorrow and treats him well from now on, that would be the best. If she doesn't register the marriage tomorrow, then... then let's do what you said last time. Let them break up soon. I and your aunt can find someone better for your uncle, someone not much older, of good character, and ideally without children."
"Alright, you make the decision."
Chen Feng had no opinion on how to handle his uncle's matter and left it entirely to his mother. If not for wanting to keep his mother from worrying over these ridiculous issues of his uncle's, he honestly didn't want to get involved.
By the afternoon of the next day, Zhao Xiaolan started a video call with Chen Feng again. As soon as the call connected, Zhao Xiaolan angrily said, "Ah Feng, this woman, Mao Xiaoling, truly doesn't care about your uncle at all and doesn't respect what I say. Yesterday, I asked your uncle to pass on the message to her, and she responded by bringing up her mother, saying her mother doesn't agree to the marriage registration yet. Moreover, her mother told your uncle that they can get married, but they need a house first, with the property registered under Mao Xiaoling's name, along with a dowry of 180 thousand. We are not even bothered that she brings along two kids and her mother with a bad reputation, and yet they're looking down on us."
To be fair, her mother's demands might not be considered excessive, considering that even for remarriage, having no car, no house, and no dowry, who'd marry you?
But of course, having the house registered solely in Mao Xiaoling's name was a bit much. Down in the countryside, a house with renovation could cost four to five hundred thousand, which isn't small change. Not to mention the 180 thousand dowry.
Chen Feng said, "Since her mother brought up conditions, there's still room for negotiation. The question is whether she genuinely cares about uncle. If her plan is just to exploit uncle and our family for some money, then there's really no need to engage with them. Otherwise, she'd really think she has uncle and us under her thumb."
Still angry, Zhao Xiaolan said, "She should check her own situation, bringing along two kids with a bad reputation; she's only younger than your uncle and somewhat good-looking. Yet she demands a house and so much in dowry. She's doing this on purpose to make things difficult for your uncle. Where's the sincerity in that? I think she's doing it deliberately, with the aim to get us relatives to pay for a house for your uncle, then just gift it to her. Wishful thinking on her part."
