After I Fully Prepared for the Apocalypse, the Ungrateful Cried with Regret-Chapter 44: We Have a Water Element Superpower User
Nina Jacobs was just as frustrated.
That was why she decided that after she got everyone settled at the base, she would strike out on her own.
Otherwise, it would be too inconvenient.
For the next two days, Nina Jacobs spent most of her time with Leo Hale and the others clearing out the zombies outside their gate and in the neighboring homes.
"Have you guys noticed it’s getting hotter and hotter?"
After washing up, Leo Hale couldn’t help but take off his shirt. For protection, they all wore heavy-duty jackets whenever they went out.
Having just returned from killing a few zombies, they could literally wring water from the clothes they took off.
"It’s definitely not normal. We still need to be careful about heatstroke."
Daniel Hale brought out a few basins of ice water for them to use to cool down.
It was already the end of October, but the temperature was nearing 104 degrees Fahrenheit.
On top of that, with the power and water out, their household water supply was running low.
"I can bear the heat, but the smell is just..."
Chelsea Walsh’s face was pale.
The corpses rotted especially fast in the high temperatures, and the stench had killed her appetite for the past two days.
"You get used to it."
Nina Jacobs wanted to say that this was the new normal.
’The next few months will be just as hot, which makes water all the more important.’
After much thought, Nina Jacobs decided to use a "First Superpower Card."
They needed a Water Element Superpower User among them; otherwise, the water reserves in the old house wouldn’t be enough.
Early this morning, she had already used the "First Superpower Card" on her mother, Vera Coleman.
But it seemed Vera Coleman hadn’t yet realized she had awakened a Superpower.
It wasn’t until after lunch, while Vera was washing dishes, that she suddenly cried out in surprise.
"I was just wondering how we could reuse this water, and I can’t believe it all ended up collected in this bucket over here."
Vera Coleman said excitedly.
"Miss Coleman, you must have awakened a Water Element Superpower,"
Ian Chandler said.
"Does that mean we won’t have to worry about running out of water?"
Vera Coleman tried to conjure water using the method Ian Chandler had heard on the radio, and before long, she had filled a cup.
"Does this mean we can take a proper shower?"
Leo Hale sniffed the cup of water. It was just like clean water, with no smell at all.
And it was crystal clear.
"This water is safe to use. Cooking or showering, it’s all fine,"
Nina Jacobs said.
’I chose Vera Coleman as the one to awaken a Superpower partly because Superpower Users have better physical constitutions than ordinary people.’
’Vera’s health had been so-so ever since she got pregnant. Becoming a Superpower User might be good for both her and the baby.’
’Besides, they really were short on water.’
Daniel Hale was also happy for Vera. "The radio said the chance of awakening a Superpower is one in three hundred. Honey, you’re amazing."
"Come on, come on, I’ll fill the tank for you all."
The old house still used an old-fashioned storage tank for its water supply. Normally, an electric pump was needed to draw tap water into the tank, which was now convenient for Vera Coleman.
As long as there was water in the tank, they would have a steady supply.
Although she only managed to fill less than a third of the tank, Vera Coleman was already very satisfied.
Knowing they had usable water made the scorching weather feel less unbearable for everyone.
But a new crisis was dawning.
A government broadcast announced that a very small number of zombies had been found to have awakened Superpowers.
’Zombies had Superpowers now.’
Chelsea Walsh never thought her earlier worries would become a reality.
But they had no choice but to accept it.
"We should clear out the neighboring houses as soon as possible.
If any of them evolve Superpowers, we won’t be safe,"
Nina Jacobs said.
Over the past few days, Daniel Hale had used materials collected by Ian Chandler to raise the height of the old house’s courtyard wall.
They were also extremely careful in their daily lives. Besides keeping the doors and windows shut to avoid making noise, Nina even used her Fire Element Superpower to burn all their household trash.
But even so, a few zombies still loitered outside their gate every morning.
Leo Hale used his Superpower to open the metal door of the house in front of them.
Nina Jacobs raised her guard as well.
For the past few days, she’d had the persistent feeling of being watched, and the gaze came from this very house.
But she had already used "Five Senses Enhancement" to listen, and there were no human voices coming from inside.
’Perhaps there was only one living person inside.’
ROAR!
A long-haired female zombie charged at them.
Leo Hale had learned to control a long blade. Although his strength was lacking, he still managed to slice off half the female zombie’s face.
"You’re getting better, Leo."
Chelsea Walsh was already quite skilled at paralyzing zombies with her Thunder Element Superpower.
Seeing the female zombie immobilized, Ian Chandler lopped off its head with one swing of his blade.
"Just one zombie in this house?"
Leo Hale entered the house and found it relatively tidy, with no signs of other zombie activity.
Just then, a sound came from upstairs.
"There’s more upstairs?"
Chelsea Walsh and the others went upstairs with their blades drawn, only to find a woman in a corner room who looked completely drained.
"Please, save me,"
the woman pleaded.
"There’s actually a survivor. Are you okay?"
Chelsea Walsh wanted to help the woman up, but she worried she might be infected.
’After all, she looked like she was on the verge of death.’
"I’m fine. I’m just so scared."
The woman looked up, her gaze landing on Nina Jacobs.
’Even though she was prepared for this, Nina was still puzzled.’
’The woman before her was actually Shannon Renner!’
’In her past life, she had met Shannon Renner near a supermarket. At the time, Shannon’s husband had clearly been bitten by a zombie, so Nina had pulled her away on a whim.’
’Later, Shannon and her group had indeed stayed at the old house for a few days.’
’So why had Shannon Renner suddenly appeared here in this life?’
"Do you know the zombie downstairs?"
Her expression didn’t change, as if she were casually asking a stranger.
’Could Shannon Renner, like Wyatt Jacobs, have been sent by Liam Grant and his people?’
’Her intuition told her that wasn’t it.’
’Recalling the conversation between two people she’d overheard a few days ago, she was now certain it had been between Shannon Renner and another woman.’
’And that other woman was very likely the female zombie from the yard downstairs.’
’Shannon Renner killed her and then hid here.’
"She was my best friend. She brought me to her home,
but I never imagined she’d get infected."
Tears streamed down her face like broken strings of pearls. Shannon Renner was a Water Element Superpower User, and crying was one of her most-used skills.
"I’m sorry for your loss."
Chelsea Walsh felt a pang of sympathy.
"Let’s go."
Nina Jacobs didn’t look at Shannon Renner again.
’No matter what Shannon Renner’s goal was, she wouldn’t believe a single word she said.’
"Wait, I’m a Water Element Superpower User.
Can you take me back with you?"
Shannon Renner asked.
She noticed that the other three all looked at Nina Jacobs in unison.
And Nina was looking at her as if she were a complete stranger.
"Sorry, we already have a Water Element Superpower User."
Nina Jacobs’s answer caught her completely off guard.
"How is that possible?!"
Shannon Renner regretted it the moment the words left her mouth.
She said awkwardly, "I mean, I want to kill zombies with you guys, too.
Zombies are just so detestable!"
