Chapter 39: Chapter 39: The Second Day of the Apocalypse

"What did you say? She ran off?"

Renee Strong asked in disbelief.

Ivan Lawson had returned looking disheveled, bringing news that Shannon Renner had escaped on her own.

"Was she reborn or not?"

This was what Liam Grant cared about most.

If Shannon Renner was also reborn, then what about Nina Jacobs?

"I don’t know either. From the looks of it, she’s probably gone crazy."

Ivan Lawson wasn’t sure if Shannon Renner had been reborn either.

It was impossible to be certain based on that one word.

"Where did she go after getting out of the car?"

Simon Abbott’s brow furrowed. He had planned for every contingency, but he’d never expected a problem to arise with Shannon Renner.

"Don’t know. But I doubt she’s doing well. She probably went to join her son and husband in death."

Ivan Lawson suddenly realized something was wrong. "Why is Wyatt Jacobs here? Didn’t you go to Nina Jacobs’s place?"

"..."

A silence fell over the room.

"She’s gone," Liam Grant said.

He didn’t know why, but with Nina Jacobs gone, he felt a strange sense of loss.

"All this work for nothing."

Ivan Lawson cursed under his breath. It seemed the lead on Ian Chandler was completely cold now.

"Not necessarily. I think I might know where they went."

Wyatt Jacobs ate a few pieces of fruit from the platter.

’He wasn’t actually nervous. Recalling his chat with Vera Coleman and Daniel Hale, there was only one place Nina Jacobs and the others could be going.’

...

An SUV was speeding down a main road in City D.

Chelsea Walsh hadn’t slept all night, and the journey had left her unbearably tense.

Her heart felt like it was about to leap out of her chest.

It was because they were hitting a zombie almost every few minutes.

Sometimes, it was even a whole group of them.

Nina Jacobs was the one driving, and she looked remarkably calm every time they hit a zombie.

It was as if she were just running over heads of cabbage.

Daniel Hale covered Vera Coleman’s eyes, holding her close and comforting her.

Meanwhile, Leo Hale was on the verge of a breakdown.

The city he had lived in for over twenty years was just... destroyed.

"No one’s alive. There’s no one left alive."

He couldn’t help it. The immense shock had filled him with overwhelming sorrow.

Ian Chandler kept a broadcast running on the official Drakonia app, afraid of missing any information.

The broadcast mentioned that a very small portion of the human population had awakened Special Abilities.

That’s how they all learned there were so many different types of Superpowers that could be awakened.

Nina Jacobs was also listening intently to the broadcast. ’In this life, Drakonia’s reaction speed was much, much faster.’

’In her past life, they didn’t hear about Superpowers until the sixth day of the zombie virus outbreak.’

’But now, it was only the second day.’

’It seemed everything was developing in a better direction.’

"The road is blocked up ahead. Ian, get out of the car with me."

Nina Jacobs slowly pulled the car over to the side of the road.

A dozen or so cars had crashed into each other, completely blocking the only road forward.

Probably because this was a highway meant only for vehicles, there weren’t many zombies on the road.

A few zombies were stuck between the wrecked cars, roaring at them incessantly.

"I’ll get out and help, too."

Leo Hale grabbed the axe by his feet and followed without waiting for an argument.

The brief training from the previous night came in handy. Facing the zombies that could barely even walk straight, Leo Hale copied Nina Jacobs’s movements and swung the axe down decisively.

But when he got closer to the cars and saw the ghastly human remains, anger surged within him again.

Children had their limbs torn off, eaten before they could even turn into zombies...

"BLECH..."

Ian Chandler couldn’t help but retch for a moment before asking, "Miss Jacobs, what do you need me to do?"

Nina Jacobs surveyed their surroundings and pointed at the cars in the middle.

"Use your Space Superpower to pull these cars in, then toss them to the side of the road."

Nina Jacobs’s words were a great inspiration to Ian Chandler.

’So his Space Superpower wasn’t just for storing things.’

The sense of dejection he’d felt earlier when hearing about all the powerful Superpowers completely vanished.

’Miss Jacobs has a use for me! My Space Superpower is useful too!’

After clearing the road, the three of them quickly returned to the vehicle.

Nina Jacobs was holding a bag of food.

"Found it in one of the other cars," Nina Jacobs lied.

Vera Coleman and Daniel Hale hadn’t told her, but she already knew that their food and water supplies were almost gone.

Especially after the new members had joined in the past two days.

Everyone’s breakfast this morning had just been a few packs of crackers.

"Wow, there’s so much food! And milk and hard-boiled eggs?!"

Daniel Hale had been worried that scavenged food might not be clean, especially since Vera Coleman was pregnant. But everything in the bag was sealed, so it looked like there was nothing to worry about.

"Don’t worry about food and water for now. I stockpiled a lot back at the old house."

Nina Jacobs said, noticing that Vera Coleman seemed hesitant to eat.

’Food was the one thing she wasn’t short on.’

"Um... if we have to get out and fight zombies again later, I’ll help too," Chelsea Walsh said, a bit embarrassed.

’I’m eating their food and living with them, but I’m not doing any work at all. This is just not right.’

Nina Jacobs didn’t mind.

’City D will establish a shelter in the first month of the apocalypse, and a base in the third month.’

’The base will be relatively safe. Once she gets Leo Hale and the others settled there, her job will be done.’

’Especially Vera Coleman and Daniel Hale.’

’That gold will be enough for them to live in the base without worrying about food or shelter.’

According to the map, they were about 40 minutes away from their destination.

But soon, a truck parked horizontally across the road blocked their path.

"What do they want?"

Daniel Hale frowned as he saw two men jump down from the roof of the truck.

The two men had smug expressions and were holding baseball bats.

They definitely didn’t look like good people.

"You guys stay in the car. I’ll go down."

Daniel Hale said, about to get out.

"Dad, you don’t get it. At a time like this, it’s all about who has more people."

Leo Hale and the others got out of the car too, but Nina Jacobs noticed that the two men didn’t look intimidated at all.

"They might have weapons," Nina Jacobs reminded everyone.

Drakonia strictly prohibited the circulation of firearms, but during this period of chaos, finding one was relatively simple.

"What’s the meaning of this, fellas?" Leo Hale asked first.

"Don’t get us wrong, we just want to borrow some gas. Our car ran out of gas. How about you share some of yours? Or you could just leave the car. This one of yours looks pretty nice."

The taller of the two men, a man with stubble, said with a smile.

"Are you kidding me?"

Leo Hale wasn’t an idiot. Weren’t they just blatantly trying to rob them of their car?

Whether you were out of gas or out of a car, getting by in the apocalypse would be nearly impossible.

"Not willing to trade? Well, we can’t guarantee what happens next."

Sure enough, the stubbled man pulled a gun from behind his back and aimed it at them.

The other, shorter man extended his right hand, and loose gravel from the roadside began to float under his control.

"My buddy here is a Superpower User. You’d better hand over the car. Or else, I’ll blow your head off!"

"We’ll see who’s blowing whose head off."

The muzzle of the gun in Nina Jacobs’s hand was now also aimed at the stubbled man.

Without any hesitation, she pulled the trigger before the other man could even react.
