After His Sweetheart Moved In, He Came Home Every Night-Chapter 99: Wyatt Sterling Only Meddles in Alice York’s Business
Sometimes, Alice York really thought Wyatt Sterling was baffling.
All Nathan Sterling had done was hide behind her in fear, cautiously grabbing her sleeve. And yet, Wyatt couldn’t even stand the sight of it, scaring Nathan into a stupor.
"I... I... Sister, I..." Nathan Sterling sounded utterly wronged.
Alice York gently patted Nathan’s arm, comforting him. "He’s not going to eat you. You don’t have to be afraid of him."
Nathan asked, "Then will he eat you?"
"He will. Eat me up until not a single crumb is left." The moment Alice said it, she noticed Wyatt Sterling descending the steps and walking toward them.
Nathan ducked further behind Alice, whispering, "But you were holding his hand. Why would he still want to eat you?"
Alice was speechless. ’This brat really needs something to shut him up.’
Wyatt Sterling drew near, happening to overhear Nathan’s question. He asked the boy, "Want to know why?"
Nathan still didn’t dare to look Wyatt directly in the eye. "Wh-what reason?"
A brilliant smile touched Wyatt Sterling’s lips. "Delicious."
"..."
Alice wished she could reach across the distance and clamp a hand over Wyatt Sterling’s mouth.
Fortunately, Nathan was still young and didn’t understand the other meaning behind the word "delicious" coming from Wyatt’s lips.
He shook his head frantically at Wyatt Sterling. "I stink! I’m not delicious at all."
Wyatt Sterling scoffed lightly and beckoned for Nathan to come over. Nathan was afraid of him and refused to move. Alice knew Wyatt’s limits when it came to his patience and temper and was sure he wouldn’t actually do anything to Nathan, so she personally led the boy to him.
"Nathan Sterling, look at me."
Wyatt Sterling began to speak slowly, his voice laced with a mesmerizing quality that compelled Nathan to overcome his fear and look at him.
Wyatt said, "When you see Grandfather later, you tell him that you were the one who came to beg me for help."
Nathan didn’t react, as if he hadn’t understood.
Alice opened her mouth to say something, but Wyatt stopped her with a raised hand. "He understands."
Alice turned her head to look at Nathan. His expression wasn’t one of confusion, but rather, hesitation.
After a moment, Nathan finally nodded. "I know what to say."
Wyatt Sterling gestured with his eyes for Mason Cheney to take Nathan inside.
It was quiet now, with no one else around.
Alice thanked the man candidly. "I know you’re doing this to give us a legitimate reason to see my mother, Third Uncle. I’m very grateful."
"You’re thanking me too soon," he said.
Alice pressed her lips together. "I still have to say it. Your intentions are good, Third Uncle."
"Good intentions..." Wyatt Sterling looked at Alice, his gaze tracing her face. "And what if my intentions aren’t good?" 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮
Alice froze for a second. "What do you mean by that, Third Uncle?"
Wyatt Sterling just laughed it off. "Exactly what it sounds like."
’Literal...’
Alice’s expression gradually darkened.
The incident had been sudden, without any warning. All she knew was that her mother’s situation was most likely related to that ugly scandal she was aware of.
That day, she had happened to walk in on Victor Vance with her mother, both of them disheveled. So she had naturally assumed that this time, too, someone had caught them red-handed and reported it to Old Master Sterling.
But what if it wasn’t a matter of being caught, but of being reported?
’What if someone had deliberately leaked it...’
Alice was so lost in thought that she didn’t notice Wyatt Sterling was now standing right in front of her. It wasn’t until she felt a warm touch on her cheek that she snapped back to reality, taking a large, startled step back to put distance between them.
Wyatt Sterling’s hand froze in mid-air. Seeing her pull away, a flash of displeasure crossed his eyes. "Looks like your face has healed?"
Alice raised a hand to her own cheek, still a bit on edge. "It has. Thank you for the medicine, Third Uncle."
Wyatt Sterling walked toward her, step by step, getting closer and closer.
Alice appeared calm on the surface, but her heart was racing. This was the Sterlings’ estate, in the courtyard, in broad daylight. She was terrified Wyatt would do something reckless. If that happened, it wouldn’t just be Mindy Vaughn locked in the ancestral hall; she would be joining her.
His sudden touch to her face just now had already scared her badly enough.
"Don’t you take another step back," he said, his voice deep.
Alice’s body froze as if paralyzed. She didn’t dare to move. "Third Uncle..."
Wyatt Sterling didn’t make any more moves, stopping in front of her to ask, "Is the phone working well?"
Alice nodded quickly. "It’s working great."
"Let me see it," Wyatt said.
’Does he not believe I’d actually use the phone he gave me?’
Fortunately, she had listened to Zoe Jenson’s advice and decisively pulled the new, pink-cased phone out of her bag. "I started using it last night. It runs very smoothly."
Wyatt Sterling lowered his gaze, hiding the smile in his eyes. "You have a habit when you speak. Half truth, half lie."
"I do not," she denied.
"I called you in the middle of the night," Wyatt said. "The call didn’t go through."
"..." ’What kind of psycho calls someone in the middle of the night...?’
"It seems I should stick to giving you practical things. All that jewelry, the cash transfers... you haven’t touched a single cent. Just how afraid are you of owing me?"
"I haven’t reached the point of destitution yet." Her statement was clear, her attitude still unassuming yet dignified. "I can still provide for myself."
Wyatt Sterling stared at her for a long time. "So you’re saying these material possessions don’t belong to you, and you can’t accept them with a clear conscience?"
Alice paused. After a moment’s thought, she realized there was nothing wrong with that statement, so she nodded. "Yes."
"What if they were ours jointly?" Wyatt asked.
’Jointly owned?’
Alice blinked in confusion. ’Jointly owned what? Don’t tell me he means joint asse—’
"What are you thinking about?" There was a hint of a smile in his eyes.
Alice shook her head. "I wasn’t thinking about anything. And I don’t know what you’re talking about, Third Uncle."
Wyatt Sterling snorted coldly and started walking away. Alice knew where he was going and immediately trotted to keep up. Mason Cheney followed a step behind, leading Nathan Sterling.
「The Sterlings Ancestral Hall.」
Even from a great distance, Alice could hear Mindy Vaughn’s cries. They were heart-wrenching, making anyone who heard them feel uneasy.
As they drew closer, Alice wished she could run ahead.
But Wyatt Sterling was walking in front of her. She couldn’t run past him, so she followed obediently, praying he would walk a little faster, just a little bit faster.
When they reached the entrance of the ancestral hall, Alice immediately saw Mindy Vaughn slumped on the floor. Her usual poised, wealthy-madam demeanor was gone, replaced by disheveled clothes and unkempt hair.
She was covering her face with her hands, sobbing and whimpering. Upon suddenly hearing Alice’s voice, she looked up, her vision blurred with tears, and cried out, "Alice..."
Alice stood stunned for a few seconds. For as long as she could remember, this was the first time she had ever seen Mindy Vaughn in such a pathetic state. One side of her face was badly swollen, and her eyes were puffy from crying.
She started to walk over.
Just then, Wyatt Sterling’s voice rang out. "Stay put."
Alice turned her head. As she saw Wyatt Sterling, she also saw Old Master Sterling standing to the side. Realizing her breach of etiquette, she silently retreated.
Old Master Sterling let out a heavy snort. His gaze toward Alice held none of an elder’s kindness, only cold indifference. "Who allowed her to come here?"
"I did," Wyatt Sterling stated calmly.
Old Master Sterling shot Wyatt a sideways glance. "Wyatt, you’ve never been one to meddle in other people’s business."
Wyatt Sterling’s lips curved. "I didn’t used to meddle, no. But now... things are different."
