After His Sweetheart Moved In, He Came Home Every Night-Chapter 78: Seen Holding Hands with Third Uncle
"Mom, I wasn’t talking about Third Uncle."
Alice York was impressed by Mindy Vaughn’s imagination. What she was trying to say was that she didn’t want to be involved with the Sterlings anymore and might find someone else in the future.
But to Mindy Vaughn’s ears, it sounded like she was trying to make a move on Wyatt Sterling.
"Oh, is that so."
Mindy Vaughn glanced at her. "That’s what I thought. You don’t seem like the type to have that kind of nerve." 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶
Alice York said nothing more. Just as she was about to get up from her seat, Nathan Sterling, who was sitting opposite them, suddenly blurted out, "Mom, she’s lying to you! She’s got tons of nerve! She even held hands with Third Uncle! I saw it!"
...
Mindy Vaughn immediately turned her head to stare at Alice York, her gaze shifting from confusion to scrutiny, intense enough to burn a hole through her.
The air grew still.
Alice York wished she could vanish on the spot.
"What Nathan said... is it true? Alice, did you and Wyatt Sterling..."
Before Mindy Vaughn could finish, Alice York suddenly cut her off. "Mom..."
She steadied herself, feigning complete composure. "Nathan’s always spouting nonsense, but you’re not actually going to believe him, are you? Besides, shouldn’t your first reaction be to find it ridiculous? Holding hands with Third Uncle? Why didn’t he just say I was holding hands with Grandpa!"
After speaking, Alice York even forced a few laughs.
Watching Alice York’s reaction, Mindy Vaughn suppressed her doubts and turned to scold Nathan Sterling with a stern face. "You little brat, you’re looking for a spanking, aren’t you? If you spout any more nonsense, I’ll make sure you leave this house crying after you finish your meal with a smile."
Nathan Sterling spat the meat from his mouth, looking disgusted. "Mom, I’m not talking nonsense! I really saw it! She just won’t admit it."
Alice York’s fingers, which had been resting flat on the table, curled into tight fists. She held back, saying nothing.
If she rushed to explain herself, it would only make her look guilty. So, she put on a detached expression and let out a dry laugh.
Seeing her nonchalant attitude, Mindy Vaughn naturally didn’t suspect anything further. She raised her chopsticks threateningly, and Nathan Sterling, terrified, began shoveling rice into his mouth. "I won’t say any more, I won’t say any more..."
He was just a child, after all, and knew enough not to pick a losing fight.
Mindy Vaughn put a piece of meat on Nathan Sterling’s plate. "Just eat."
Nathan Sterling fell silent.
After giving meat to Nathan, Mindy Vaughn placed a piece on Alice York’s plate as well. Seeing that she wasn’t moving, she asked, "You’ve barely eaten anything. Are you done already?"
Alice York: "I was living in constant fear at the Churchill Family’s place, and it made my stomach problems act up. I don’t have much of an appetite. I can’t eat."
Mindy Vaughn said sympathetically, "You have to nurse your stomach back to health slowly. In any case, you’re back now. Just focus on getting well."
Alice York nodded.
Mindy Vaughn waved over a servant. "Go prepare a bowl of fish maw and bird’s nest soup for Alice."
After dinner, Mindy Vaughn insisted Alice York stay, refusing to let her leave. When Alice said she needed to go back to West River, Mindy was even more adamant. "You’re staying at the old house tonight. You should always think of this place as your home, not always be thinking about living outside. This way, you and Owen can see each other more often."
Without waiting for Alice York’s agreement, she directly ordered a servant to prepare an extra set of pajamas and told Alice to sleep with her that night.
Alice York was stunned.
She couldn’t remember the last time she had slept next to Mindy Vaughn. Was it five years ago? Ten? She really couldn’t recall...
While Mindy Vaughn was taking a bath, Alice York stepped outside to call Zoe Jenson back. "Zoe."
"Alice, you finally called me back." On the other end of the line, Zoe Jenson, who had been worried all afternoon, could finally relax.
As soon as she landed at Silvanus Airport, Alice York had messaged Zoe Jenson to explain the situation. Zoe, while happy for her, knew she had to go back and deal with the Sterlings, so she had been waiting, and now Alice had finally contacted her.
"Did it go smoothly? You’re okay, right? Did Old Master Sterling give you a hard time?" Zoe Jenson asked a series of questions.
Alice York answered in quick succession, "It was smooth. I’m fine. Grandpa didn’t give me a hard time."
Hearing that, Zoe Jenson felt even more relieved. "That’s good. I was originally stressing about how to help you escape, and then I suddenly got the news you were flying back to Silvanus. I was completely floored."
Alice York chuckled and said, "I have you to thank for that."
Zoe Jenson laughed too. "So, are you going back to work at the hospital tomorrow? Or do you have other plans?"
"I sent a message to Director Linden asking if I could resume my duties tomorrow, but he hasn’t replied yet. I’ll wait a bit, and if I still haven’t heard back, I’ll give him a call."
She had been gone for nearly a month, so the normal procedure for returning to work was to contact Director Linden. Of course, there were faster ways—asking Old Master Sterling or Wyatt Sterling—but she didn’t want to bother either of them. She would wait for Director Linden’s reply first.
After hanging up, Alice York turned around and saw a pair of eyes glaring at her with hatred.
"Nathan Sterling."
she called out.
Nathan Sterling glared at her and tried to run, but before he could turn, Alice York grabbed him by the scruff of his neck. He flailed his arms and legs. "Let me go! Let me go!"
Alice York tightened her grip, pushing down slightly. "Don’t move."
Mindy Vaughn wasn’t around, so Nathan Sterling, afraid Alice York would hit him again, obediently stopped moving. But his eyes, wide as saucers, were still fixed on her.
"Come with me. We need to talk."
Without waiting for Nathan Sterling’s consent, Alice York simply hooked an arm around his neck and dragged him off to the side.
There were no servants here, and it was far from the doorway. Alice York let go of Nathan Sterling’s neck and leaned against a red pillar. "Aren’t I your sister? Why do you always hate me so much?"
Nathan Sterling tilted his head up high. "My last name is Sterling. What’s yours? I’m an only son. You’re not my sister."
Alice York frowned. His words were truly hurtful.
"You didn’t drag me over here just to beat me up, did you? Let me tell you, if you hit me again, when I grow up and become a cop, the first person I’m going to execute is you!"
Nathan Sterling said viciously, trying to intimidate Alice York.
...
She raised a hand to rub her furrowed brow and got to the point. "Why did you tell Mom you saw me holding hands with Third Uncle?"
It was both a question and a test; she wanted to know if Nathan Sterling had really seen it.
Nathan Sterling crossed his arms. "I did see it. You’re just not admitting it. You’re guilty, and you’re scared."
Alice York pressed her lips together.
’The kid really saw it.’
"I’m not just going to tell Mom. I’m going to tell everyone in the family! I want all of them to know you held hands with Third Uncle! Hmph!"
With that, Nathan Sterling gave her a smug, triumphant smile, his eyes full of provocation.
Alice York smiled unhurriedly. "When did you see it?"
Nathan Sterling craned his neck back and forth with an obnoxious, punchable look on his face. "It was today! I saw you go to Grandpa’s place, and I saw Third Uncle come out and chase after you. Third Uncle took your hand and left with you. I saw everything, but Mom doesn’t believe me."
...
Alice York’s expression was exceptionally grim.
’Wyatt Sterling is such a cautious person. How could he not have noticed Nathan Sterling secretly following them?’
’Unless...’
"Are you done asking questions? If you’re done, I’m leaving." Nathan Sterling gave a cool toss of his head and turned to leave.
Alice York didn’t stop him, only saying faintly, "Go on and tell everyone, then. You might as well grab a megaphone and announce it to every single person in the old house, so they all know."
Nathan Sterling took her suggestion. "Good idea! I’ll go find a megaphone right now."
Alice York smiled. "I just wonder if Third Uncle will be angry. Nathan, you’ve lived in the old house your whole life. You must know better than I do how terrifying Third Uncle is when he’s angry."
