Chapter 72: Chapter 72: Wyatt Sterling Says, "With Me Here, He Can’t Get Close to You

The matters Wyatt Sterling and William Churchill were discussing in the study were far too secret. Eavesdropping would come at a price.

This was the only thing Alice York could think of, so when Wyatt Sterling demanded to know if she had heard anything outside the study, she denied it at once. "I saw the study door was closed, so I turned to leave. I didn’t linger. I heard nothing."

Wyatt Sterling pressed down on her shoulder. "Is that so?"

"Yes." She didn’t even blink.

She appeared completely candid, without the slightest hint of a guilty conscience.

Wyatt Sterling stared at her for a long moment before suddenly losing interest. He let go and allowed her to sit back down. "What did you want from me?"

Alice York, freed from his grip, hadn’t even had a chance to readjust her posture when he spoke. She answered, "I wanted to ask when you’ll be leaving, Third Uncle."

Wyatt Sterling asked, "Afraid I’ll just leave suddenly?"

Alice York’s expression turned serious. "Yes. After everything that’s happened, I’m afraid the Churchill Family will target me once you’re gone. It’s better to be mentally prepared if I’m going to be left without support, don’t you think?"

"Support..." Wyatt Sterling let out a laugh.

Alice York didn’t know what he was laughing about, so she said nothing more.

She looked down, stroking the phone she had just gotten back. Most of the gloom in her heart lifted, but a part of it remained. She hadn’t boarded the plane yet, and anything could go wrong before it was a done deal.

The thought of things going wrong made her anxious. She could only hope that everything would go smoothly, that there would be no more mistakes.

"Mason Cheney told me you saved someone at the club last night."

Wyatt Sterling’s unexpected words pulled Alice York from her thoughts.

She remembered the unconscious man from the previous night. She had no idea what had happened to him at the club. He had no obvious external injuries, but he had been at death’s door.

She had just been passing by; it must not have been his time to die.

"Yes, that’s right." Alice York gave him the short version, not going into the details of the rescue. "The ambulance siren you heard last night, Third Uncle, was for him."

Wyatt Sterling asked, "Do you know him?"

The question left Alice York looking baffled. "I was just passing by the door to the private room, so I helped him. How could I possibly know him?"

Droplets of water landed on the half-open window, growing more frequent. It had started to rain.

There hadn’t been a sunny day lately. It was always gloomy, just like...Wyatt Sterling’s temperament.

"Why do you ask, Third Uncle?" she prompted when he said nothing more.

Wyatt Sterling pressed a button, and the window slid up, shutting out the noise from outside. "Just asking."

’She didn’t believe he was ’just asking.’’

Thinking it over, she felt there was a hidden meaning in his words. "Don’t tell me you know him, Third Uncle?"

Wyatt Sterling neither confirmed nor denied it. Instead, he asked her, "Have you heard of the Hawthorne Family from Arden?"

"I’ve heard of them."

But she’d never had occasion to cross paths with them.

They were one of the top families in Arden. The Hawthorne Family had been entrenched there for nearly a century, possessing high status, immense influence, and a famous name.

After a few seconds of silence, it suddenly dawned on Alice York. "No way... The man I saved last night, he’s one of the Hawthornes from Arden?"

Wyatt Sterling’s lips curled. "Smart."

"...I saved someone from the Hawthorne Family!" Alice York was astonished. Overcome with curiosity, she pressed him, "What’s his status in the family? Do you know, Third Uncle?"

At the time, he hadn’t had a single person with him, and it seemed like no one there knew who he was.

Wyatt Sterling said coolly, "When you have the chance to see him again, you’ll naturally find out who he is."

Alice York mentally dismissed his words. ’As if there would be such a coincidence for them to meet again.’

Back at the Churchill residence, Alice York immediately finished packing her luggage. She didn’t dare contact anyone before boarding the plane, terrified that Wyatt Sterling might change his mind. She planned to just sit and wait for the three o’clock flight.

After she had been waiting for nearly half an hour, there was a knock at the door.

Her nerves were stretched so taut that the sudden knock made her jump. She got up and tiptoed to the door. Seeing Mason Cheney, she felt a pang of anxiety. "Does Third Uncle have new instructions?"

Mason Cheney was just passing on a message. "Third Master sent me to call you for lunch."

Alice York had no appetite, but she had no choice but to go.

When she got downstairs, she didn’t see Wyatt Sterling. Instead, she saw Kyle Churchill... No, wait, this was Scott Churchill. The cast and bandages on his hand were gone, and he was bouncing around like a little kid, looking to be in great shape.

’So, William Churchill isn’t going to make Scott Churchill pretend to be hurt anymore?’

"Alice York, ha ha ha! Alice York, ha ha ha!" Scott Churchill waved at her. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞

"..."

The image of him choking her was still vivid in her mind, leaving Alice York with a bit of trauma. She forced the corners of her mouth into a semblance of a smile.

Scott Churchill came dashing toward her, chanting her name, "Alice York, Alice York."

Alice York instinctively tried to avoid him, but a cold voice barked from behind her, "Stand right there!"

She froze, not daring to move an inch.

Likewise, Scott Churchill, who had been rushing toward her, also stopped in his tracks. He stood in place, glancing over at her from time to time, obviously wanting to get closer but also afraid.

And what was he afraid of? Of Wyatt Sterling, who was standing behind her, of course!

Wyatt Sterling casually raised his hand and patted her on the back. "I’m here. He can’t get near you."

Alice York instinctively shuffled closer to Wyatt Sterling. Her movement greatly pleased his possessive nature, and the corners of his lips curled into a satisfied arc.

"Third Uncle," she asked in a low voice, "Is William Churchill done hiding this other son of his?"

Wyatt Sterling didn’t bother lowering his voice. "He can’t be hidden any longer, so what’s the point?"

Alice York asked, "Then what about Kyle Churchill?"

Wyatt Sterling answered dismissively, "He’s off getting high. Hasn’t found his way home yet."

A muscle in Alice York’s temple twitched. She asked no more questions.

The dining room was in a side hall. On the way there, Alice York realized that Scott Churchill was truly terrified of Wyatt Sterling, not daring to get anywhere near him.

"Scott."

William Churchill strode over, and Scott Churchill immediately ducked behind him.

William Churchill patted him reassuringly, then turned to Wyatt Sterling, smiling as he invited him to sit.

Wyatt Sterling pulled out a high-backed chair and nodded for Alice York to sit. Alice York was stunned by the gesture, but she couldn’t very well refuse and make him lose face, so she sat down in the chair he had pulled out for her.

William Churchill took in the entire scene.

Just then, Scott Churchill whispered from behind William Churchill, "Daddy, I want to sit with Alice York and eat."

William Churchill, who always indulged this son’s every whim, immediately looked to Wyatt Sterling and asked tentatively, "My Scott seems to have taken a real liking to Miss York. How about we let them sit a bit closer?"

Wyatt Sterling was magnanimous. "Your son may do as he pleases."

William Churchill smiled. He had known before he even asked that Wyatt Sterling wouldn’t object. After all, their cooperation had just been finalized, and there was a long road ahead of them.

He pulled out the chair on Alice York’s other side and had Scott Churchill sit there.

It was a large, round table, with each setting spaced about a person’s width apart. The moment Scott Churchill sat down, he immediately scooted his chair closer to Alice York’s.

Alice York was extremely uncomfortable, but Wyatt Sterling himself had permitted Scott to sit beside her. To ensure she could return to Silvanus, she decided to endure it.

However, just then, the chair beneath Alice York suddenly slid over toward Wyatt Sterling, coming to a stop right next to his.

It happened so suddenly that Alice York was stunned for a few seconds.

When she looked down, she realized the chair hadn’t slid on its own; Wyatt Sterling had grabbed the back and pulled it over.

A hush fell over the table.
