After His Sweetheart Moved In, He Came Home Every Night-Chapter 36: His Words Last Night Were All Lies
"Miss York, you’ve kept me waiting."
Kyle Churchill strode toward them with his hands in his pockets.
Seeing Kyle Churchill, Alice York remembered why she was here. She was supposed to ask Wyatt Sterling if he had agreed to let Kyle take her out today!
Just as she was thinking about it, she heard Kyle Churchill shouting, "Did you ask your Third Uncle? What did he say?"
The color drained from Alice York’s face.
Owen Sterling noticed Alice York’s sudden nervousness and asked in a low voice, "What did Kyle ask you to run by Third Uncle?"
Alice York opened her mouth to say something, but Kyle Churchill beat her to it. "I was planning to ask Miss York out today. However, Miss York has very strict family rules and said she had to ask her Third Uncle’s opinion first. She would only go out with me if her elder consented."
Kyle Churchill wore a wild, arrogant smile.
By then, he had reached Alice York. His gaze swept over her face as he said suggestively, "Don’t tell me you haven’t asked yet, Miss York?"
Alice York’s fingers, hanging at her sides, curled into fists, and her breathing grew ragged.
It was a clear sign of her growing anxiety.
Owen Sterling placed a hand on Alice York’s shoulder to comfort her. "If you don’t want to go, you don’t have to. It’s okay. I’ll turn him down for you."
With that, Owen Sterling looked at Kyle Churchill, his tone polite but distant. "I’m sorry, but today probably isn’t a good day. Alice isn’t feeling well."
"Eldest Young Master Sterling, it’s not really your place to say whether it’s a good day or not, is it?"
Although Kyle Churchill addressed Owen Sterling by his title, he clearly didn’t take him seriously.
They were of the same generation, so neither could pull rank on the other.
Owen Sterling’s expression soured. "I already told you Alice isn’t feeling well. What more do you want?"
Owen Sterling didn’t know Kyle Churchill well, but based on this interaction, he could tell the man was, more than likely, bad news.
Alice York was beautiful and often attracted unwanted attention when she was out. Usually, when they encountered someone difficult, revealing their connection to the Sterlings was enough to resolve the issue. But right now, they were in Washington, on the Churchill family’s turf. Owen Sterling couldn’t afford to make an open enemy of them. So, despite his annoyance, he maintained a gentlemanly demeanor and tried to reason with him.
Kyle Churchill clicked his tongue. His gaze bypassed Alice York and landed on Wyatt Sterling’s back in the distance. He called out, "Third Uncle, I’d like to take Alice York out today. Do I have your permission?"
"You—" Alice York glared at Kyle Churchill.
Kyle Churchill smiled. "If you didn’t ask, then I will. Don’t worry, if your Third Uncle says no, I’ll turn around and leave immediately. I won’t pester you."
Alice York’s heart sank with uncertainty.
Wyatt Sterling’s words from last night were still vivid in her mind. But now, with Kyle Churchill publicly asking for her, would Wyatt agree to let him take her away?
"Alice, don’t be scared. Come with me." Owen Sterling pulled Alice York directly in front of Wyatt Sterling.
He spoke first. "Third Uncle."
Wyatt Sterling glanced over, his expression so cold it was unapproachable.
Alice York clung to a sliver of hope. ’I hope what he said last night was true—that with him here, I have nothing to fear.’
Owen Sterling spoke up. "Third Uncle, it’s not a good day for Alice to go out. Could you please turn him down for her?"
Seeing his chance, William Churchill chimed in with a grin. "The Sterlings’ family rules are what they are, and we certainly can’t ignore them. Why don’t you make your position clear, Third Master?"
Wyatt Sterling lowered his gaze.
Alice York watched him, a mix of anxiety and anticipation churning inside her. Her curled fingertips dug into her palms, leaving a series of crescent-shaped marks.
But all she got was the man’s casual reply: "Since Young Mr. Churchill has extended such a sincere invitation, you shouldn’t slight him."
Alice York froze.
A satisfied smile spread across William Churchill’s face, as if he had expected this all along. "Miss York, your Third Uncle has given his consent. Don’t overthink it. Just relax and have a good time with Kyle. He feels terrible about what happened last night and genuinely wants to make it up to you."
Alice York bit her lip so hard the color drained from it, nearly drawing blood.
’So his words last night were a lie...’
’All of it was a lie...’
"Third Uncle, Alice doesn’t want to go. Why are you making things difficult for her?" Owen Sterling couldn’t stand by and watch any longer. He was determined to stand up for Alice York.
Wyatt Sterling’s gaze swept over Alice York’s face, turning sharp. "Has she said she’s unwilling to go?"
"Alice, she..." Owen Sterling trailed off. He turned, grabbed Alice York’s wrist, and encouraged her in a gentle voice, "Just tell Third Uncle. Tell him you don’t want to go out with Kyle Churchill."
Alice York’s eyes instantly turned red.
She suppressed her emotions with all her might to keep from losing control, but the stifling frustration welling up in her chest made her want to cry.
"Alice?" Owen Sterling urged her.
Alice York stiffly pulled her hand away from Owen Sterling’s, her face ashen. "Third Uncle is right. Young Mr. Churchill invited me sincerely, so I shouldn’t slight him."
Owen Sterling was bewildered. "Alice, you... you really want to go?"
Alice York looked up at the concerned Owen Sterling and forced a smile. "Yes. I should go."
After saying that, she didn’t look at Wyatt Sterling’s expression. She walked directly toward Kyle Churchill, who was waiting for her in the distance.
Owen Sterling didn’t believe Alice York was going willingly, but in the end, he didn’t stop her.
"Miss York, you really did keep me waiting a long time." Kyle Churchill smiled at her, his eyes glinting with the certainty of victory.
Alice York took a breath to steady herself. "My apologies for the wait, Young Mr. Churchill. It can’t be helped; the Sterlings’ family rules are strict."
Kyle Churchill tilted his head as he looked at her. "So, you can relax and come out with me now?"
Alice York smiled. "Anywhere Young Mr. Churchill wants to go is fine. I’m at your disposal for the entire day."
"I like that!" 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢
Kyle Churchill was extremely satisfied with Alice York’s attitude and reached out to take her hand. Alice York neither dodged nor avoided him. ’Wyatt Sterling handed me over to Kyle in front of everyone. Isn’t that a tacit approval for Kyle to do whatever he wants with me?!’
But unexpectedly, Kyle Churchill pulled his hand back. He gave her a meaningful smile and said, "We should take it slow. Don’t want to frighten Miss York."
Then, like a gentleman, he made way for her. "After you, Miss York."
Without looking at him, Alice York walked straight ahead.
Kyle Churchill turned and waved to the group behind him. "We’re heading out! We won’t be back for lunch or dinner, so don’t save us anything."
William Churchill was all smiles. "Remember to show Miss York a good time."
"Of course," Kyle Churchill replied, turning away.
In high spirits, William Churchill personally went over to grab a fish from the foam box to feed his two arapaimas.
Owen Sterling watched Alice York leave with Kyle Churchill, feeling both anxious and angry. When he looked at the man beside him, he saw only a cold, indifferent expression.
"Third Uncle, are you really just going to let Kyle Churchill take Alice away like that?"
Wyatt Sterling’s face was grim. "What else?"
"That Kyle Churchill is obviously up to no good—" Owen Sterling cut himself off, lowering his voice.
Although William Churchill wasn’t right there, he wasn’t far. Even a whisper could be overheard.
Wyatt Sterling warned Owen Sterling in a cold voice, "Just mind your own business. Stay out of other people’s affairs."
With that, Wyatt Sterling turned and left, his dark, gloomy expression terrifying to behold. Mason Cheney quickened his pace to keep up.
"Owen, actually, there’s something we didn’t tell you..."
Silas Sterling, who had been standing nearby, suddenly spoke up.
Owen Sterling’s ugly expression softened slightly as he turned to face Silas Sterling. "Second Uncle, what exactly have you been hiding from me?"
Silas Sterling looked pained. "Your grandfather gave Alice to the Churchill family."
