Chapter 15: A little worried

At first, the two males didn’t dare eat freely. They waited until Nina was almost finished before finally digging in, devouring the food with abandon.

After half an hour, there was barely anything left in the pot—it was practically wiped clean. Even the green peppers were almost completely gone.

Nina was full as well. Satisfied, she rubbed her belly, the curve of it standing out quite clearly.

Aji felt a flicker of confusion. Did the little female really eat that much? Why is her belly so round?

Mino, on the other hand, stared wide-eyed in disbelief. "L-little female... you—you’re pregnant?"

Aji froze, then quickly looked at Nina’s belly.

Nina was speechless. How slow can these two be? They’re only realizing it now.

Of course, it also had something to do with her dress. It was a loose, doll-style dress, and her upper body was rather full, so her belly didn’t stand out much unless one looked closely. It wasn’t strange that they hadn’t noticed at first.

"Yes," Nina replied simply.

Mino and Aji instantly wore expressions as if they’d been struck by lightning.

Oh gods! They had actually let a pregnant female cook for them. Someone should just strike them dead with thunder already!

"Little female, I’m so sorry," Mino said, filled with guilt. "I didn’t realize you were carrying a baby—and I even let you cook."

"I’m sorry too," Aji hurried to apologize.

"It’s fine," Nina said indifferently. "I’ve always cooked for myself anyway. It’s no big deal."

But Mino and Aji felt that Nina was terribly pitiful—pregnant, yet still having to cook for herself.

In the beast world, which female wasn’t pampered and waited on hand and foot? Most never lifted a finger, let alone during pregnancy.

Their hearts filled with tenderness and sympathy for Nina.

"Since you’re pregnant, where are your mates?" Mino asked, puzzled. "Why aren’t they with you?"

A female as beautiful as Nina should have plenty of mates. How could not a single one be by her side?

Aji immediately looked indignant. "Those mates of hers all ran off. They’re not fit to be called males—abandoning their female while she’s carrying a baby!"

"What? They ran away?" Mino slammed the table in anger. "A bunch of irresponsible bastards. If I ever run into them, I’ll beat them to death."

Those males were truly brainless idiots—to abandon such a wonderful little female.

Hmph. One day, those scumbags would regret it for the rest of their lives!

"Little female, them leaving just proves how stupid and rotten they are," Mino continued. Then he paused, brows knitting slightly before saying firmly, "From now on, if you ever need anything, come find me. I’ll help you with whatever I can."

What Mino had originally wanted to say was, From now on, let me take care of you.

But he still had a marriage contract hanging over him, so he couldn’t bring himself to say something like that.

In the past, he had always looked down on females. It wasn’t that he had never seen lonely, unpaired females, or pitiful yet beautiful ones—but he had never felt anything for them. At most, there had been a trace of distant sympathy.

Yet for some reason, Nina was different.

He felt sorry for her. He wanted to treat her well, even wanted to please her.

And they had known each other for less than a day.

He was a noble member of the Spirit Cat clan. All his life, others had fawned over him—he had never been the one to curry favor with anyone.

Aji hurried to add, "I’ll help too. From now on, after I finish hunting, I’ll come over to cook for you. I’ll also bring you extra food."

Nina raised a hand to cover her mouth and gave a light cough. "It’s really fine. I can manage on my own."

Sorry to my unseen, irresponsible ex-fiancés—please help take the blame.

But the way she spoke only looked like forced bravery in Mino and Aji’s eyes, making them feel even more tender and protective toward her.

After the meal, Mino and Aji cleaned the table and went to wash the bowls and pots.

Nina handed them a wooden bottle of plant-based dish soap and showed them how to use it. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

After trying it, they couldn’t stop marveling at how magical it was—not only did it remove grease effortlessly, it even left behind a faint, pleasant fragrance.

Recently, Nina had been making a nest for her babies.

Why a nest?

Because in the beast world, cubs were oviparous—they were born as eggs and usually needed seven days to a month to hatch on their own.

Thankfully, she didn’t need to incubate the eggs herself. Otherwise, she truly wouldn’t know how.

Although nests could be bought, she had nothing urgent to do lately, so she decided to make one herself to pass the time.

With nothing better to do, she sat on the bed, continuing to stitch the base of the nest.

After finishing the chores, Mino and the others came over to help.

Aji didn’t need to hunt today, so he stayed as well.

"Little female, be careful not to prick yourself with the bone needle," Mino said anxiously. "If that happens, stop right away—I’ll do it for you!"

At this point, he didn’t want Nina doing any work at all.

"It’s fine," Nina said. "I’m okay. This is just something to pass the time."

"Then I’ll help you build the nest together."

"Alright."

Nina didn’t refuse again.

"What kind of nest do you want?" Mino asked.

Nina roughly described the style she had in mind.

She had already bought the animal hides, so they began making the nest using the materials she’d prepared.

The atmosphere grew a little quiet, and Mino looked for something to talk about. "Little female, what race are your babies?"

The question caught Nina off guard.

She didn’t know either.

After a brief pause, she said, "I don’t know."

In the beast world, females usually had multiple beast husbands, so it wasn’t unusual not to know. Some ancient races, however, possessed bloodline resonance—like the Divine Deer clan Nina belonged to.

So her answer wouldn’t arouse suspicion.

Mino had only asked because he wanted to know what kind of meat to bring her in the future. Different races’ cubs had different preferences, and those preferences could influence the mother as well.

Since Nina didn’t know, and he didn’t want to ask about her beast husbands’ races, he changed the subject. "Then... how long until the cubs are born?"

Seeing how large Nina’s belly already was, he guessed it wouldn’t be many days.

"About twenty days or so," Nina replied.

She didn’t intend to hide this. She might need their help later on anyway.

Even though she had only just met Mino, he gave her a clean, sincere impression, and she was willing to try being friends with him.

She was alone now, and having more friends could only be a good thing.

Mino and Aji blinked, then looked at her belly again. Only twenty days left, and it was already this big?

They were both young, unmarried males and didn’t know much, but they couldn’t help feeling a little worried. They seemed to recall hearing that if a cub grew too large, there could be risks during birth.

In the beast world, pregnancies usually resulted in a single cub, so compared to normal cases, Nina’s belly did seem somewhat large.

Nina herself, however, lacked knowledge in this area and didn’t feel there was anything unusual at all.
