Chapter 63: Chapter 63: Propriety Is Just Protective Coloration

「The next day.」

Moira Sloan woke up at six o’clock, having set an alarm.

She showered, did her makeup—the only thing missing was the ceremonial incense.

The sheer ceremony of it all was comparable to her own wedding.

Lying on the sofa, Connor Quinn watched her, his brows knitted slightly.

A moment later, Moira Sloan appeared before Connor Quinn in a modified, strapless qipao. She arched a delicate brow and asked him, "Do I look good?"

"Mm-hmm," he rumbled, his voice low and deep.

Moira Sloan stared at him. A few seconds later, she went back into the bedroom. When she emerged again, she was wearing a white gauze shawl.

It was beautiful, to be sure.

But it lacked the alluring charm she’d had a moment ago.

Connor Quinn sat up on the sofa, his legs resting slightly apart. Reaching for his pack of cigarettes, he lit one. "It looks better with just the qipao."

Moira Sloan shot him a sidelong glance. "You think I don’t know it looks better with just the qipao?"

Connor Quinn arched an eyebrow. 𝓯𝙧𝓮𝓮𝒘𝓮𝙗𝙣𝒐𝒗𝒆𝓵.𝓬𝓸𝒎

Moira Sloan grew coy, clearly not wanting to tell the truth. "It’s none of your business."

Connor asked, "Afraid of upstaging the bride?"

He’d hit the nail on the head. Moira Sloan glared at him, then decided to just be blunt. "Aside from the day she’s born and the day she dies, a woman’s wedding is the most important day of her life. No woman wants to be outshone on her big day."

Connor Quinn lowered his gaze to flick the ash from his cigarette. There was a hint of a smile in his eyes, but he kept it well hidden. "Aren’t you going there to cause a scene?"

Moira replied, "I’m going to spite Shane Jennings. Besides, he’s the one who personally sent me an invitation. I have no beef with the bride, so why would I cause trouble for her?"

’Besides, the bride even gave me five million.’

"I see," Connor said.

Moira Sloan and Connor Quinn arrived at the wedding venue just before noon.

As she had wished, they were seated at the main table.

Thanks to her, Flora Rhodes was also seated at the main table.

She had arrived before Moira, and the moment she saw her, her eyes were practically glued to Connor Quinn.

Once Moira sat down, Flora Rhodes grabbed her hand, shaking it with excitement.

"Hot. He’s drop-dead gorgeous."

"How can anyone be that handsome?!"

Moira Sloan rolled her eyes at her. "Could you try not to be so embarrassing?"

Flora Rhodes, her hair in long, seductive waves, leaned close to Moira. "Is he really Shane Jennings’s cousin?"

The topic was a sore spot. The moment it was brought up, Moira’s mood soured. "Yeah."

Flora Rhodes gave her a suggestive look. "So, who’s better? The older cousin or the younger one?"

Moira Sloan shot her a look. "The next relative will be even better."

Flora feigned shock, but she couldn’t hide the laughter in her eyes. "What are you trying to do, wipe out all the men in the Jennings family?"

Flora had just finished speaking when, before Moira could respond, Connor Quinn, who was beside her, handed each of them a glass of water. In a deep voice, he said, "I’m afraid I’ll have to disappoint you. In this generation of the Jennings family, there’s only me and Shane."

Flora had initially pegged Connor Quinn as the cold, aloof type and hadn’t dared to speak to him. But now, hearing him say that, she found him quite interesting. She proactively held out her hand. "Hi, I’m Flora Rhodes. Moira’s bestie."

After she spoke, Flora didn’t forget to add, "A real bestie, not a frenemy."

Connor Quinn didn’t shake her hand. He simply gave her a slight nod and introduced himself. "Connor Quinn."

This reaction from Connor Quinn didn’t anger Flora in the slightest. In fact, it only made her more excited. She grabbed Moira’s arm. "This cousin is a keeper! He knows his boundaries."

Moira scoffed.

’Connor Quinn? Knows his boundaries?’

’That sense of propriety is just his camouflage.’

The Jennings Family was one of the most prominent families in Atheria. They had invited many guests, and many more had come uninvited.

Moira was actually uncomfortable in such a boisterous setting.

She was inherently lazy and hated having to navigate these kinds of events.

Flora Rhodes, sitting beside her, had been her best friend for years and could spot her impatience at a glance. Besides, she had a ton of girl talk she was dying to share. She leaned in and whispered, "Need to go to the ladies’ room?"

Moira’s eyes curved up at the corners as she immediately agreed. "Let’s go."

Flora linked arms with her, grinning.

Once the two of them were a good distance away, someone sat down next to Connor Quinn.

Despite the formal occasion, the newcomer was dressed very casually in a riot of colors, as if he were on vacation.

The next second, the man slung an arm around Connor Quinn’s shoulders and asked with a smirk, "I hear you’re selling your house to pay for Verdi’s medical bills?"

Connor shot him a sharp look, his expression impassive. "You buying?"

The man jested, "I’ll buy it. But where would you live after I do?"

Connor replied nonchalantly, "At my girlfriend’s place."

The man teased, "And does your ’girlfriend’ know that she’s your girlfriend now?"

Connor looked down and toyed with the teacup in front of him. When he glanced up, his expression was casual, but his voice was chillingly stern. "Miles Murray, what exactly has made you so tired of living?"

The man said, "What?"

Connor stated with a straight face, "You’re just asking to die."
