After Betrayal - I Married a Handsome Tycoon-Chapter 112: Clues and Traces
Connor Quinn changed the subject so abruptly that Miles Murray couldn’t keep up.
When he finally processed it, the corner of his mouth twitched. "You really have to get a tattoo?"
Connor Quinn said, "It’s for wealth and protection."
Miles Murray said, "Cut the crap."
Connor Quinn lowered his head and lit a cigarette. "Murray, I’m thirty-two. If I want two kids in the next three years, I need to get a move on."
Miles Murray laughed in exasperation. "And so?"
Connor Quinn’s expression was deadpan as he spouted utter nonsense. "A Lord Grant tattoo would actually be pretty cool. Just think, if your future girlfriend saw Lord Grant on your back, she’d be completely captivated by your masculine charm."
Miles Murray retorted, "What kind of girlfriend is going to be doing it with me from behind?"
As he said this, a thought seemed to strike Miles Murray. A shiver ran through him. The usually suave and carefree man completely lost his composure and started swearing.
Meanwhile, Moira Sloan and Flora Rhodes had just reached the parking lot and were about to get in their car when Rachel Yates suddenly rushed out of nowhere, blocking their path.
Rachel Yates looked unhinged. Her makeup was a mess, and her eyes burned with undisguised fury.
"Moira Sloan, you ruined me today, and I’m not going to let you get away with it."
"I might as well tell you, I did sleep with Shane Jennings. He won’t sleep with you, but he’ll sleep with me. Any idea why?"
"Do you know what I hate most about you? You came from nothing, just like me. Your upbringing was absolute shit. But you still act like you’re so high and mighty."
"And another thing! We both tried to study under him, so why did Kain Alden accept you and not me? And Shane Jennings! Have you forgotten? I met him first!"
Rachel Yates was ranting like a woman possessed.
Moira Sloan watched her with cold eyes, neither answering nor refuting her claims.
Finally, Flora Rhodes couldn’t take it anymore and snapped, "Are you insane? If you want to talk about apprenticeships, I wanted to study under Mr. Alden too! It’s up to him who he accepts, isn’t it? What does that have to do with Moira?
"And as for Shane Jennings—lady, have you been playing the victim for so long you’ve started to believe your own lies? What do you mean, you met him first? The Jennings Group is our partner. By your logic, he knows Ms. Warren in the sales department best. Should he be with her, then?"
Stung into silence by Flora Rhodes’s rebuttal, Rachel Yates turned her vicious glare back to Moira Sloan. She suddenly let out a cold laugh. "You’re just like your master. You both deserve to die. They should have finished you off back when they killed him."
At Rachel’s words, the color drained from both Moira Sloan’s and Flora Rhodes’s faces.
Moira Sloan surged forward and grabbed Rachel Yates by the collar. "What did you just say?"
Rachel Yates sneered. Seeing Moira’s composure finally crack, she leaned in closer, her voice dripping with mockery. "You’ve always suspected your master’s death wasn’t an accident, haven’t you? Well, I can confirm it for you. It wasn’t. Your master was..."
Rachel let the word hang in the air, then broke into peals of laughter.
Moira’s grip on Rachel’s collar tightened, her normally alluring eyes turning sharp as daggers. Just as she was about to demand an answer, Rachel suddenly wrenched free. She stumbled back a few steps, putting distance between them. "Why should I tell you?"
Rachel added with a sneer, "Moira Sloan, if you’re so capable, why don’t you find out for yourself?"
Moira was furious. "Rachel Yates, what do you know?"
"Whatever I know," Rachel said, "I’m not telling you."
Rachel looked utterly deranged. After a moment, she stepped back toward Moira, lowering her voice to a whisper only the two of them could hear. "Moira Sloan, you have no idea how horribly your master died. Oh, and by the way, as he was dying, he begged his killer to spare you. Said you were innocent..."
Moira Sloan was speechless.
’What did that have to do with me?’
’Why would Kain Alden beg his killer to spare me?’
Moira had always assumed Kain Alden’s death was the result of a business rivalry. Now, after hearing what Rachel said, her thoughts were in turmoil.
Seeing Moira’s usually composed expression waver, Rachel knew she had hit her mark. She smirked and walked away.
When Flora saw her leaving, she moved to block her, but Moira stopped her with a single look.
Once Rachel was out of earshot, Flora asked in a low voice, "Why didn’t you let me stop her?"
Moira steadied herself and said, "We both know her limits. Even if she knows the truth, it’s useless. She’d never have the guts to actually say it."
Flora asked, "So what do we do?"
Moira forced herself to remain calm. "We’ll have to think this through carefully."
’This is exactly the kind of moment when I can’t afford to panic.’
’According to Rachel, the person who killed Kain Alden must be someone I know.’
’Someone in my circle.’
’But who?’
As a storm of thoughts raged in Moira’s mind, the phone in her pocket suddenly rang.
Moira took a shallow breath, pulled out her phone, and glanced at the screen.
When she saw the call was from the Jennings Estate, her expression turned cold. She answered the phone and asked, feigning ignorance, "Hello, who’s this?"
