Chapter 103: Chapter 103: Baffling and Bewildering

A shiver ran down Caleb Lockwood’s spine when he heard Connor Quinn’s counter-question and met his icy gaze.

Something slowly began to dawn on him, but the thought vanished in a flash. It was too quick to grasp, leaving him thoroughly confused.

Caleb Lockwood stammered, "So, was I right, or... or not?"

Connor Quinn nonchalantly dropped his gaze, took the cigarette from the corner of his mouth, and extinguished it. "Caleb Lockwood, do you have a girlfriend?"

Caleb Lockwood’s mouth worked faster than his brain. "Eldest Brother, you absolutely cannot set me up with Moira."

Connor Quinn raised an eyebrow.

Rowan Churchill’s inner thoughts: ’Oh, for heaven’s sake, just strike this fool with a bolt of lightning and end his misery.’

In the end, Connor Quinn said nothing. As he got up to leave, he walked over to Caleb Lockwood and clapped him hard on the shoulder twice.

Caleb Lockwood was completely baffled.

After Connor Quinn left, Caleb Lockwood looked at Rowan Churchill in a daze. "What did Eldest Brother mean by patting me like that?"

Rowan Churchill asked, "Did he hit you hard?"

"He did," Caleb Lockwood answered truthfully.

"So, do you get it now?" Rowan Churchill asked.

Caleb Lockwood slapped his forehead, a look of sudden realization on his face. "I get it! Eldest Brother is entrusting me with a great responsibility!"

Rowan Churchill: "..."

Human evolution has always been a mystery.

Intelligence, emotional and otherwise, is a very mixed bag.

Unlike Caleb Lockwood, who was always a beat behind, Rowan Churchill had already pieced it all together and was lost in thought.

’Just when did those two get together?’

’I’d never heard of them interacting before.’

Leaving the private club, Connor Quinn took a cab to Lillian Kidd’s place.

When Lillian Kidd saw him, she became quite emotional, her eyes red as she constantly wiped away tears.

Connor Quinn first offered three sticks of incense for Kain Alden, then went to the living room to sit with Lillian Kidd for a while.

Connor Quinn had always been a man of few words, so Lillian Kidd did most of the talking.

She asked if he was doing well and why he had left so suddenly all those years ago.

Connor Quinn’s answers were evasive, brushing her questions aside.

Lillian Kidd could tell he didn’t want to talk about it. Dabbing the corners of her eyes with a handkerchief, she said, "Your master was asking for you constantly before he passed. I know he wanted to see you one last time..."

Hearing Lillian Kidd’s words, Connor Quinn’s eyes snapped up.

Lillian Kidd didn’t notice anything amiss and continued, "Oh, by the way, have you heard about what happened with your junior sister?"

Connor Quinn’s expression remained unchanged. "I have."

Lillian Kidd sighed. "That girl was spoiled rotten by your master. This whole affair... sigh. Regardless, I hope you can help her. You two are from the same school, after all."

Connor Quinn gave a noncommittal reply. "I need to investigate."

After leaving Lillian Kidd’s residential complex, Connor Quinn took out his phone and made a call.

When the call connected, Connor Quinn said to the person on the other end, "Investigate my master’s wife."

The person on the other end was taken aback. "Huh? Investigate your master’s wife?"

Connor Quinn said, "Yes, but be discreet."

After confirming, the person didn’t ask any more questions and agreed, "Understood."

Hanging up, Connor Quinn stood by the roadside, cupping his hand against the wind to light a cigarette.

As he smoked, he replayed what Lillian Kidd had just told him.

Lillian Kidd said Kain Alden had been asking for him constantly as he was dying, wanting to see him one last time. 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎

But before Kain Alden died, he had clearly sent a message via a trusted confidant, telling him not to show his face no matter what happened.

And then there was Lillian Kidd’s attitude when she mentioned Moira Sloan.

She seemed to be defending her, but between the lines, she was painting Moira as spoiled and domineering.

Putting it all together...

’Am I overthinking this?’

’Or is there really something wrong with Lillian Kidd?’

By the time he finished his cigarette, Connor Quinn had collected his thoughts. He was about to hail a cab when the phone in his pocket suddenly rang.

He pulled out his phone, saw it was Miles Murray calling, and answered.

"Speak."

Miles Murray asked, "Where are you?"

Connor Quinn said coolly, "Just finished paying respects to my master."

Miles Murray teased, "Do you know that your junior sister is planning to go after Rachel Yates?"

Instead of answering, Connor Quinn shot back, "What do you think?"

Miles Murray ribbed him, "Your junior sister really holds a grudge. The scheme she’s set up will completely ruin that Rachel Yates."

Connor Quinn was fiercely protective. "She deserves it."

Miles Murray, enjoying the drama, added, "But I heard that Rachel Yates is someone Shane Jennings protects. Do you think Shane Jennings will..."

Connor Quinn said coldly, "Then he can be ruined right along with her."
