After Being Betrayed I Married the Glamorous CEO-Chapter 230: You’re Not Sorry, You’re Scared!
Xu Haicong was speechless. This is too absurd, too ridiculous, he thought after a moment of silence. I’m a titan of Hong Hai Capital, one of the most prominent figures in Capital City. How could I be facing a life-or-death situation in the prime of my life?
But Shen Fanyun’s gaze was firm, and his expression wasn’t a joke. Is this guy really going to kill me?
"Heh." Xu Haicong still couldn’t believe it. If I were a worthless ant, I’d have no way to resist. But I’m not.
Shen Fanyun reached out and patted Xu Haicong on the forehead. "Tell you what," he said on a whim. "I’ll give you a chance. Use all your connections and resources. Find the biggest backer you have and see if he can save you!"
Xu Haicong fell silent, then asked, "Are you joking with me?"
He was becoming more convinced that Shen Fanyun was just being arrogant and overconfident. He scoffed, "If I really call in my backup, I’m afraid it would scare you to death." 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦
"I’d love to hear all about it." Shen Fanyun took out Xu Haicong’s phone, placed it on the table, and gestured for him to call this supposed backer of his.
Xu Haicong and Yuan Chong exchanged a bewildered look. Is he serious, or is this just a bluff?
Every decision and move Shen Fanyun made was beyond Xu Haicong’s expectations. Considering how Shen Fanyun had suddenly cornered Hong Hai Capital, Xu Haicong realized he was probably not just all talk. Hong Hai Capital’s PR team rarely met its match, but this opponent was clearly well-prepared.
"Fine. Since you’re looking for death, I’ll grant your wish," Xu Haicong snarled, deciding to go all in. "I just hope you aren’t so terrified that you lose your mind and come crawling back to me, kowtowing and apologizing. You brought this upon yourself.
"I, Xu Haicong, will teach you a lesson: there are some people in this world you can never, ever afford to provoke!"
Since Shen Fanyun had asked for it, he immediately called for backup.
"Old Chen, hello. I’ve run into a bit of trouble here in Hangcheng City, uh..." Xu Haicong began, cutting right to the chase.
But before he could finish, the man on the other end cut him off, his tone harsh and overbearing. "Don’t contact me again." It was obvious he was avoiding Xu Haicong like the plague, terrified of getting dragged into his mess. "The matter you’re involved in this time is too big. No one dares to protect you."
"What do you mean?" Xu Haicong was dumbfounded, wondering for a moment if he’d dialed the wrong number. This is my close friend, a department head! In the past, one word from him was all it took to get things handled beautifully. Why is he so eager to cut ties now? We’ve known each other for years; our bond goes without saying. What’s gotten into him today? Did he take the wrong medicine?
"Who on earth did you provoke? Orders came down from the top: no one is to interfere in your affairs. Anyone who gets involved is done for!"
CLICK.
The line went dead.
Stunned, Xu Haicong held the phone motionlessly, his eyes wide as a bull’s. It took him a very long time to process what he had just heard. Orders from the top? Old Chen isn’t just some ordinary department head; he has a direct line to the highest echelons. Does ’the top’ mean the Supreme Assembly itself? A direct order from the core leadership? Isn’t that a massive overreaction?
He admitted he had some clout in Hangcheng City, but he was nothing in the eyes of those who held the power of life and death. What have I ever done to warrant their attention?
"Any other calls to make?" Shen Fanyun asked with a smile.
Xu Haicong couldn’t speak. The situation was getting stranger and stranger, and he felt a dreadful premonition creeping up on him.
"I... I..." Xu Haicong’s lips started to tremble, and his fingers shook uncontrollably.
Seeing this, Yuan Chong’s face paled.
Su Ke’s brow furrowed as he looked at Shen Fanyun with an incredibly complex expression. The power behind this man... it seems I’ve once again underestimated it. Not only was the boss of Hong Hai Capital unable to stand against Shen Fanyun’s pressure, but even Xu Haicong’s powerful backer was now scrambling to cut ties, not daring to get involved.
"Who... who exactly are you?" Xu Haicong asked with difficulty. Did I just kick a steel plate?
Shen Fanyun didn’t answer right away. Instead, he snapped his fingers at Xu Haicong. "Come on. Kneel."
Xu Haicong remained speechless. After a two-second pause, he obediently dropped to his knees before Shen Fanyun. Not daring to hesitate, Yuan Chong knelt beside him.
Although he was seething with resentment, Xu Haicong knew better than anyone that a wise man knows when to yield. Stubborn pride would only get him killed faster.
"What was the girl’s name?" Shen Fanyun asked.
Xu Haicong’s gaze flickered away. After a long pause, he finally choked out, "Zhou... Zhou Yun."
"Luscious?" Shen Fanyun sneered, twisting her name into a lewd pun.
Xu Haicong froze.
"Was she luscious?" Shen Fanyun asked again.
SLAP!
Knowing Xu Haicong would remain silent, Shen Fanyun simply slapped him across the face. The force was so great that one side of his cheek seemed to cave in.
"I... I was drunk! I made a mistake, I didn’t mean to!" Xu Haicong cried out. "I never meant to offend her at first, it was really an unintentional slip! I’m so, so sorry!"
Realizing that Shen Fanyun was not to be trifled with and wouldn’t let the matter drop, Xu Haicong didn’t dare to be complacent. He quickly became obedient and earnestly admitted his guilt. He tried to blame it all on being drunk, insisting that he had not subjectively intended to harm her.
"From what I heard you say earlier, you sounded pretty proud of yourself, didn’t you?" Shen Fanyun said. "When you mentioned her suicide, weren’t you mocking her, saying she deserved it? What’s this? Now you know how to apologize? Now you realize you were wrong?"
BOOM!
Shen Fanyun clenched his hand, grabbed Xu Haicong by the head, and slammed it down onto the coffee table. Blood instantly sprayed across the surface.
"Deserved it?" Shen Fanyun sneered. "You’re utterly depraved. Did you really think no one in this world could deal with you?"
BOOM!
Shen Fanyun yanked Xu Haicong’s head up and slammed it down again. A large pool of blood dripped from the edge of the coffee table onto the carpet.
"Ah—" Xu Haicong hissed, completely panicked now. He realized Shen Fanyun was really trying to kill him. "I’m sorry! I’m sorry! I shouldn’t have mocked her! How about this? I’ll find time to visit Zhou Yun’s parents, and... and I’ll give them some humanitarian compensation."
"Is... is that okay?" Xu Haicong stammered, looking up at Shen Fanyun as if he were staring at a demon.
"So now you know to compensate them?" Shen Fanyun scoffed. If he truly felt any remorse, he wouldn’t have waited until today. It was clear Xu Haicong didn’t actually realize his mistake. He was just afraid.
Su Ke was petrified by the scene unfolding before him. He was seriously reconsidering whether he should have come here at all.
