After Being Betrayed I Married the Glamorous CEO-Chapter 195: The Viper Woman, Deserving of Death!
Chen Su was first taken aback, then snorted disdainfully. "Wow, you scared me to death."
"What kind of riff-raff is this, snapping at me? Are you looking to die?" she sneered. "And what can you expect from someone who hangs out with a total loser like Zhao Jian? You want me to remember your name? Why don’t you just say you’re the Retired Emperor?"
"Honestly, every frog at the bottom of a well thinks they’re some kind of local tyrant, reigning majestically over all. Hahaha, you’re nothing but a posturing buffoon."
Chen Su’s passionate mockery drew hearty laughter from her followers. They marveled at her sharp tongue and her endless repertoire of insults.
Shen Fanyun had no energy to waste on Chen Su. With his hands clasped behind his back, he walked slowly into the hospital room.
"This Yu Lan sure is tough," Chen Su muttered to herself as she turned to leave. "Her family’s fallen so far, yet she’s still hanging on by a thread. I should visit more often. Maybe I can piss the old hag to death."
"Mom." The moment Zhao Jian saw his mother’s pale face and vacant eyes, he could no longer hold back his emotions.
The thirty-year-old man nearly burst into tears.
"COUGH, COUGH." Yu Lan coughed twice, regaining her senses. She took the initiative to comfort her son. "Don’t worry, I’m fine. I’m perfectly fine."
"I have to hold on. I need to see that woman, Chen Su, get what she deserves."
Zhao Jian gritted his teeth and nodded vehemently. "Okay. As long as you’re okay."
"And who is this?" Yu Lan’s gaze shifted to Shen Fanyun.
Shen Fanyun smiled and spoke gently. "Auntie, you don’t recognize me?"
Yu Lan stared at Shen Fanyun, unblinking. After a long moment, recognition seemed to dawn, yet she hesitated to speak.
"Is... is it Fanyun?" Yu Lan looked to Zhao Jian, seeking an answer.
Zhao Jian nodded, his voice filled with excitement. "It’s Brother Yun."
"Good boy, you’ve finally come back. I haven’t seen you in so many years. It’s good that you’re back, so good," Yu Lan said, her voice thick with emotion.
Shen Fanyun stepped forward and took Yu Lan’s withered right hand.
Barely in her early fifties, Yu Lan looked like an old woman ravaged by a serious illness. Her eyes were sunken, her cheeks gaunt, and her spirit was at an all-time low. She was like a candle flickering in the wind, liable to be extinguished at any moment.
"Auntie, please get well soon. I’ve been craving your cooking for years," Shen Fanyun said. As a genuine food lover, he wasn’t just being polite.
"Ah..." Yu Lan sighed, uncertain if her body would allow her to grant his wish.
"Zhao Jian and I are great friends; we practically grew up in the same pair of pants. His problems are my problems. Don’t worry, Auntie," Shen Fanyun declared, then gestured to Zhao Jian. "Auntie needs to rest. Let’s go for a walk."
"Okay, okay," Zhao Jian said, hesitating.
"Go on," Yu Lan urged with a wave of her hand.
In the first-floor garden, Zhao Jian looked conflicted. Even though Shen Fanyun was quite capable now, the mess he was in was incredibly complex.
"Brother Yun, I... I’m afraid of getting you involved," Zhao Jian said, reluctant to explain the full story.
Shen Fanyun passed him a cigarette. Zhao Jian took it, drew a long drag, and finally began to speak.
Chen Su and Zhao Jian were university classmates who officially got together in their senior year. They had known each other for years and knew each other well. Zhao Jian’s parents were very fond of the local Hangcheng City girl, and since Chen Su’s family was also well-off, it seemed like a perfect match. If things had gone according to plan, Zhao Jian would have been married this year.
However, not long ago, Chen Su rekindled her romance with an old flame, someone she had maintained a lingering connection with over the years. Because she was so secretive, Zhao Jian didn’t notice at first. On top of that, Chen Su was a shrewd businesswoman with a talent that far surpassed the average person.
"She transferred all our family company’s assets. Now, there’s nothing left but an empty shell."
"And it’s also saddled with massive debt. Those loans, taken out in twenty installments over three years, went straight into Chen Su’s personal account."
"She didn’t just clean out my parents’ company—now we have to pay back her loans!"
"My mother couldn’t handle the shock and collapsed. My father is currently busy leveraging old connections to try and revive the company."
Zhao Jian shook his head. The company’s books were a complete disaster. The probability of reviving it was lower than winning a five-million-dollar lottery prize.
The situation was hopeless.
"It’s all because of that vicious, heartless woman, Chen Su! Isn’t she trying to drive my entire family to their deaths?"
"For years, I poured my heart and soul into our relationship. I treated her so delicately, as if she’d melt in my mouth or shatter if I held her too tight. And in the end, I’m left with a fate worse than death."
"She and her first love secretly gutted my family."
Zhao Jian gritted his teeth, his hatred for the woman palpable. If he didn’t have to care for his parents, Zhao Jian would have considered taking Chen Su down with him by jumping off a building.
In fact, Zhao Jian was somewhat puzzled. Chen Su’s family wasn’t struggling by any means; they were even more powerful than the Zhao Family. The Chen Family was considered one of the most prominent families in Hangcheng City. If they had married, it would have created a powerful alliance.
However... now that woman couldn’t wait for him to die.
It was as if the woman he once loved so deeply had changed overnight.
"The Chen Family is very powerful," Zhao Jian sighed. "Now that we’re on the losing end, with their influence, they’ll never admit to anything." He even suspected the Chen Family had set him up from the start with the goal of swallowing the Zhao Family whole. His love affair with Chen Su had been a lie from the very beginning.
"The Chen Family?" Shen Fanyun pondered.
"Yes. I heard Chen Su has a powerful aunt... I think she’s called Chen Wen?" Zhao Jian didn’t know the details. He had only heard the name once and wasn’t sure if it was correct.
"Chen Wen?" Shen Fanyun mused. Why does that name sound so familiar?
Then, it hit him. Isn’t that Su Ziye’s damn mother? I’ve dealt with her more than once. That makes her Su Xiyang’s actual aunt. So Zhao Jian really didn’t know his girlfriend’s aunt was a Su Family daughter-in-law? Then again, if Chen Wen was setting him up from the start, she would have obviously hidden that information, not volunteered it. Besides, Hangcheng City is a big place, and the relationships between the major families are a tangled mess. It’s impossible to know everything.
"This just got a lot easier. I know this woman," Shen Fanyun said, patting Zhao Jian’s shoulder.
"What?" Zhao Jian was stunned. Then his eyes lit up as if he’d just been thrown a lifeline, and he grabbed Shen Fanyun’s arm.
Shen Fanyun reassured him, "Don’t worry. I’ll help you."
"Brother Yun..." Zhao Jian was on the verge of tears.
"You’re over thirty, what are you crying for? Get your head straight and stop thinking with your heart. Learn from this mistake and be wiser for it. Got it?"
