After Being Betrayed I Married the Glamorous CEO-Chapter 146: You Dare to Ask Me for Face?!
HISS!
The stomp straightened Liao Wei’s back, and beads of cold sweat broke out across his forehead. The pain was agonizing. His body, ravaged by years of hedonism, was strong on the outside but weak on the inside. When Shen Fanyun suddenly made his move, he could count himself lucky he didn’t faint on the spot.
"Where did this bastard come from? Let President Liao go!" a middle-aged man shouted, leaping to his feet and pointing at Shen Fanyun.
Shen Fanyun remained calm, his gaze fixed on the badge pinned to the man’s chest. Is he a member of the Charity Association? Or perhaps one of the gang who holds a part-time position at the association—doesn’t have to donate a penny, yet draws a high salary?
"President Liao is a renowned philanthropist, deeply respected not only by us, his friends, but by the public as well," the man declared with conviction. "By bullying him like this, you are making an enemy of all the people of Hangcheng City! President Liao is highly esteemed and revered. Harming him is not a wise move."
He was actually reminding Shen Fanyun that his actions were tantamount to declaring war on everyone present.
Shen Fanyun chuckled, his toe still pressing into Liao Wei’s spine. "Is your influence really that great? Funny, I’ve heard that most people in Hangcheng City don’t have a very good impression of you. In fact, they call you a sanctimonious hypocrite!"
HISS! Liao Wei wailed in pain.
The so-called successful individuals sitting below all stared with wide eyes, their expressions shifting rapidly. They were clearly terrified. After all, they were civilized people, and such violent scenes always filled them with apprehension and fear.
"I advise you, it’s not too late to mend your ways. Otherwise, if something really happens to President Liao, you will not escape the blame," the man from Liao Wei’s group, who had been blustering earlier, warned Shen Fanyun again.
Meanwhile, someone had already made a call, and the police stated they were on their way.
"Kid, do you really think just anyone can set up a charity association with both scale and fame?" Liao Wei threatened through gritted teeth. "My background is far beyond what you can imagine. Don’t worry, you’ll be regretting this soon enough!" Once he caught his breath, he would make damn sure Shen Fanyun saw just how cruel he, Liao Wei, could be.
"Is that so?" Shen Fanyun released Liao Wei, his calm demeanor unshaken. He added a reminder, "Mr. President, do you really think I’m an ordinary person?"
SNAP!
Shen Fanyun reached out and flicked the check nearby. He pulled out a lighter, set the check ablaze, and, in front of Liao Wei and the crowd of dignitaries, used it to light a cigarette. A cigarette lit with a ten-million-yuan check... doesn’t seem to be anything special, does it?
Liao Wei was speechless.
The crowd was speechless.
It was a display of sheer, arrogant dominance.
"This guy can casually write a cash check for ten million. That kind of financial power is something ordinary people can’t even imagine, let alone achieve," someone murmured.
"Did President Liao pick a fight with the wrong person this time?"
The crowd whispered amongst themselves. The middle-aged man who had stood up for Liao Wei also grew grim. For years, following Liao Wei, he had been lining his pockets. That endless stream of donations from the foolish public flowed in year after year. During peak periods, they had so much money they started to worry about how to even spend it all.
Over time, they began to freeload recklessly, indulging in all sorts of extravagant waste. If this were to be exposed, their careers in Hangcheng City would be over. Even their families would be implicated. After all, this was no different from fraud, and to make it worse, they had cloaked themselves in the guise of "caring philanthropists"!
"Young man, you should forgive and forget when you can. We all move in the upper echelons of society; we’re bound to cross paths again. How about we each take a step back?" the middle-aged man, Xu Feng, suggested. After careful consideration, he realized how thorny the situation was and feared their scheme would be uncovered. He switched tactics, trying to negotiate with Shen Fanyun amicably.
Liao Wei took the opportunity to fall silent. Earlier, his greed for the ten-million-yuan cash check had made him reckless, and he’d forgotten the most crucial point: someone who could produce ten million in cash was no ordinary individual. It was true that he, Liao Wei, had status and position, but how could Shen Fanyun be a pushover?
This young man is too reckless; it’s not a good personality trait, Liao Wei thought, also wanting to de-escalate the situation. He wouldn’t give an ordinary person a second thought, but Shen Fanyun was different. He wasn’t an ordinary person!
THUD, THUD, THUD!
Just then, a group of police officers arrived on the scene.
Liao Wei and Xu Feng breathed a sigh of relief. The man in charge was someone they knew, an old acquaintance.
Shen Fanyun turned his gaze and was also slightly startled. He recognized this person, too. It was Chen Lie! He had the exact same name as the so-called "big shot" Chen Lie from Capital City, whom Shen Fanyun had met at the Hong Family’s estate just yesterday. No wonder the name felt vaguely familiar. As for this Chen Lie, he had met him before during the incident involving Su Ziye. This man seemed to be a relative of Su Ziye’s boyfriend, Chen Feng.
"Mr Chen, this young man is causing trouble. Why don’t you... why don’t you take him away for now? I’m afraid if he keeps this up, it will reflect badly on all of us," Xu Feng whispered as he approached Chen Lie.
Chen Lie looked up and saw Shen Fanyun’s face. For a moment, his expression went blank before turning extremely grave.
"Shen..." Chen Lie’s lips parted. If he had a choice, he would never want to meet Shen Fanyun again. It would be best if they never crossed paths for the rest of his life.
"Mr Shen, this matter..." Chen Lie trailed off, clearly in a difficult position.
Everyone was bewildered. Even Liao Wei and Xu Feng hadn’t expected Shen Fanyun to be acquainted with Chen Lie.
Wait a minute! If they know each other, isn’t that a good thing? Couldn’t they just have Chen Lie mediate and make this whole crisis blow over?
"Well, talk about failing to recognize one of your own. It turns out we have this underlying connection," Xu Feng said, trying to diffuse the tense atmosphere.
However, Chen Lie’s expression hadn’t changed since he first saw Shen Fanyun. It remained heavy with caution and fear, and he dared not speak carelessly.
"Since you know Mr Chen, how about you give him some face?" Liao Wei blurted out.
Shen Fanyun took a drag from his cigarette and said nonchalantly, "Why don’t you ask him? Even if I were to give him that face, would he dare to accept it?"
"I wouldn’t dare!" Chen Lie stated firmly.
Liao Wei was speechless.
Everyone was speechless.
What kind of joke is this? This man can bring unprecedented pressure on the entire city government with a single word. Even the Secretary-General doesn’t dare to slight this godlike figure. What am I, Chen Lie, in comparison? How could I dare to ask Shen Fanyun to give me face?
"Mr Chen..." Liao Wei started to panic. Judging from Chen Lie’s attitude, he clearly didn’t dare to provoke Shen Fanyun. Could it be? Have we really been targeted by some major figure?
"Your relevant departments in Hangcheng City have been seriously negligent," Shen Fanyun said, his voice cold. "How could you allow this kind of Charity Association to operate as a flagrant scam? Detain them. Tomorrow, I’ll have leaders from the provincial government come down to investigate this personally."
