After Being Betrayed I Married the Glamorous CEO-Chapter 143: You’re Just Plain, Loose-Lipped!
Gu Feng’s seemingly conventional remark was, in fact, an insinuation. He was implying that Shen Fanyun didn’t dare allow a public search because he had a guilty conscience. As for whether Shen Fanyun had actually taken the watch or was being wrongly accused, it didn’t matter. The point was that Gu Feng couldn’t stand Shen Fanyun. He was eager to witness the man’s utter humiliation.
Shen Fanyun showed no significant emotional reaction to Gu Feng’s comments. This kid is just jealous that I’m so close to Su Xiyang. It’s only natural he’d seize this chance to target me.
Hu Yue was completely surprised that Gu Feng would cooperate with her so readily. With just a few words, he had backed Shen Fanyun into a corner. Shen Fanyun now had to either prove his innocence—and make a fool of himself in the process—or be confirmed as a thief. Either way, Hu Yue, Zhang Lifeng, and even Gu Feng stood to lose nothing.
Shen Fanyun, however, was not so lucky. He was bound to lose face no matter what, and by extension, this would also reflect poorly on Su Xiyang.
"What are you waiting for? Get up. I’m going to search you," Hu Yue commanded, crossing her arms.
Su Xiyang shot Gu Feng a meaningful look.
Gu Feng pretended not to notice. From his perspective, Su Xiyang wouldn’t turn on him over someone as insignificant as Shen Fanyun. All I did was irk the guy a little; it’s hardly worth her getting angry over.
"How much did you say your watch was worth?" Shen Fanyun suddenly asked Hu Yue.
Hu Yue replied arrogantly, "800,000."
"Do you even know how much 800,000 is? That’s more than half a lifetime’s salary for you!"
This was true. For an ordinary person, 800,000 was an astronomical sum.
Shen Fanyun just hummed in response. He made a call to Zhan Feng, who was outside on a security detail. Although with Shen Fanyun’s skills, he didn’t actually need a personal bodyguard. After hearing Shen Fanyun’s request, Zhan Feng entered in less than five minutes, carrying a stack of cashier’s checks.
The crowd exchanged puzzled glances, looking from one person to another.
"What’s he up to?" Hu Yue asked, bewildered.
Zhang Lifeng, however, craned his large head forward, squeezing into a closer position.
Shen Fanyun took the gold fountain pen Zhan Feng handed him, scribbled his signature, and dismissed Zhan Feng midway through.
"It’s 9:50 AM. The banks are open," he said. "Here is a cashier’s check for 10,000,000."
Shen Fanyun held the signed check between two fingers, gesturing for Hu Yue to take it. "My rank and authorization will let you cash this at any bank, as long as my name is on it."
The crowd was speechless.
Hu Yue was stunned.
"Let’s just say I took the watch. Here’s 10,000,000 as compensation," Shen Fanyun declared.
At that, the entire room fell silent, completely stunned.
Even Gu Feng’s mouth twitched. Though his family was well-off and he had his own business, casually writing a check for 10,000,000 was a feat beyond his means. His status simply didn’t allow for such a grandiose gesture! This Shen Fanyun... is he some kind of hidden powerhouse? Did I just screw up and offend someone important?
"Well, since you know your place... heheh, in that case, I’ll drop the matter," Hu Yue said, her eyes lighting up at the sight of the money, completely oblivious to the deeper implications.
Trembling, Zhang Lifeng smacked her hand away. "You fool!" he hissed. He then turned back to Shen Fanyun, bowing and scraping with an obsequious smile. "Sir, my apologies. This was all a misunderstanding, a complete misunderstanding. We’re certain the missing watch has nothing to do with you. I’m so sorry for the disturbance, very sorry."
Hu Yue still looked reluctant. A watch worth 800,000 for 10,000,000 in compensation? That’s a massive profit! Why wouldn’t I take it? It’s like a pie falling from the sky!
"Are you an idiot?" Zhang Lifeng continued in a low, furious whisper. "Does someone who can casually pull out a ten-million check seem like an ordinary person to you? You slander a man like that and you still want to take his money? Do you think that money won’t burn a hole right through your hand? Believe it or not, he could make one phone call and you’d disappear by tomorrow morning!"
The realization hit Hu Yue belatedly, and the color drained from her face. Did I just provoke someone I absolutely shouldn’t have? This man isn’t just one of Su Xiyang’s lackeys or subordinates... He’s a genuine powerhouse, isn’t he?
"Ah, right, right! We don’t want the money, we don’t want it!" Hu Yue stammered with a forced smile, instinctively hiding behind Zhang Lifeng.
Shen Fanyun played dumb, a smirk dancing on his lips. "You don’t want it? Why not? Weren’t you just so certain that I, Mr. Shen, stole your watch? Now that I’m offering you compensation, on what grounds could you possibly refuse?"
Hu Yue’s face fell. She didn’t dare utter another word or even meet Shen Fanyun’s eyes. Her heart began to pound wildly in her chest.
Gu Feng also sensed that something was wrong. Sitting this close to Shen Fanyun was definitely not a good sign.
"Ahem, I need to take a call," Gu Feng muttered, making an excuse to stand up.
THUMP.
A hand landed lightly on Gu Feng’s shoulder. It was Shen Fanyun. Gu Feng, who was halfway out of his seat, was forcefully pressed back down.
"Weren’t you the one who suggested searching me?" Shen Fanyun said calmly. "I’m giving you the chance. Go ahead and search me." It’s no skin off my back, anyway.
Gu Feng froze. "Uh, no, I... I trust your character! You would never steal something!"
Shen Fanyun shrugged. "We don’t know each other. Where is this supposed trust in my character coming from?"
Gu Feng fell silent.
"I..." he trailed off. Shen Fanyun was exuding a powerful, oppressive aura that made him feel as if he were sitting on pins and needles, the hair on his body standing on end.
After a long moment, Gu Feng forced a pained laugh. "I’m sorry, truly sorry. If my suggestion upset you, please forgive me. I was only trying to clear up the misunderstanding for everyone... I thought a quick search would be the fastest way to resolve it..."
Gu Feng raised his head, looking pleadingly at Su Xiyang. "President Su, please, put in a good word for me with this gentleman. I... I really meant no harm."
"No harm? Yet you called for a man you don’t even know to be publicly searched?" Su Xiyang said coolly. "I don’t get it. What did this have to do with you in the first place? Everyone else was content to just watch the show, but you had to jump out like an idiot and run your mouth. You see the trouble you’re in now?"
Gu Feng had no reply.
"You made this mess, you can get yourself out of it. I don’t have time for this." Su Xiyang had no deep connection with Gu Feng to begin with.
"I’m... I’m really sorry. It was my mistake, I was rash. My apologies," Gu Feng stammered, his face contorted into a smile that looked worse than if he were crying.
"Xi Yan was right about one thing," Shen Fanyun said. "You’re just plain contemptible."
SMACK!
Shen Fanyun’s hand whipped across Gu Feng’s face, instantly leaving five clear, red finger marks on his cheek.
This scene terrified Hu Yue and Zhang Lifeng. They knew they were the original instigators. Now that things had spiraled out of control, they, as the primary culprits, wouldn’t be getting off any lighter than Gu Feng.
