...
Dongdong was locked up in the Public Security Bureau for most of the day, her stomach long empty, and she headed straight to the nearby night market after leaving the Ping'an Clinic.
The night market was bustling at this hour, with men and women sitting in pairs at snack stands, tables laden with artificial meat skewers and low-quality alcohol, interspersed with bursts of laughter from conversations.
Dongdong found a noodle stall and tossed the last few coins from her pocket to the owner: "Whatever noodles can fit, you decide."
Seeing the three 1 Moon Coin denominations on the table, the owner glanced at Dongdong with disdain, muttering to himself, "Poor ghost."
He picked up the coins and put them in his pocket, silently boiling the soup and noodles.
Soon, the noodles were done, without a hint of oil or side dishes, just some salt in the soup and barely enough noodles for one person.
Dongdong couldn't use chopsticks and held the bowl with one hand, slurping the soup loudly. After finishing most of the soup, she grabbed the noodles with her hand and stuffed them into her mouth.
As she ate, the diners at the next table glanced at her and mocked, "Can't even use chopsticks."
Without a word, Dongdong picked up an empty bottle lying on the ground, pointed it at the person, and said angrily, "Say that again? I'm eating here, how does it bother you?!"
The diner thought she was just a small, easily bullied girl, but was surprised by her fierceness, quickly moving aside with their bowl, muttering, "I don't want to argue with you..."
"If you're not brave enough to fight, don't spout garbage. Small fry." Dongdong snorted coldly, tossing the empty bottle aside and continuing her meal.
Order was chaotic in the Border District; it was common for people to draw guns and shoot each other at the slightest disagreement. Arguments like this didn't catch any eyes, and everyone kept eating their own food.
Halfway through her meal, someone sat down beside Dongdong.
She instinctively leaned forward, shielding her bowl with her only remaining arm.
This was a special habit developed from long stays in the Public Security Bureau.
If detained for a long time and if the sheriffs were in a bad mood, daily meal provisions would be scarce.
With little food and many prisoners, fights for it would inevitably occur, and a small girl was obviously a prime target.
In her previous detentions, Dongdong couldn't remember how many times the tall prisoners had grabbed her food.
Either getting beaten up and going hungry.
Or brawling with someone until bloody, swallowing food stained with blood.
Although she wasn't in custody now, those painful experiences were etched into her bones, making guarding food a habit.
Dongdong cautiously watched the newcomer, realizing they had no intention of snatching her bowl, only then did she quietly loosen her grip and continue snatching and eating noodles.
Su Mo sat next to Dongdong, handing the owner a 10 Moon Coin bill: "One bowl of your signature noodles, please."
"Sure thing." The owner accepted the money with a smile, added various side dishes and minced meat into the pot, and personally brought the dish over, "Enjoy your meal."
Su Mo broke apart the disposable chopsticks, picked up some noodles, blew on them, and ate them in big bites.
Dongdong and Su Mo sat side by side, each eating their own noodles.
While eating, Dongdong noticed Su Mo kept glancing at her from time to time and snapped, dissatisfied, "What are you looking at? Never seen the cutest pretty girl in the Border before?"
Su Mo laughed, speaking loudly, "Owner, give the cutest pretty girl in the Border a piece of meat, the biggest piece, on my tab."
"Alright!" The owner picked up a large piece of meat and placed it in Dongdong's bowl.
Seeing the meat in her bowl, Dongdong was momentarily stunned, looking suspiciously at Su Mo.
Su Mo didn't say anything, merely eating his noodles.
Dongdong couldn't figure out the situation, but someone was offering her meat, and there was no reason to refuse.
She grabbed the piece of meat, eating it quickly, fearing Su Mo might change his mind and take it back.
Even though it was artificial meat, it tasted infinitely better than plain noodles, and she ate with relish.
After finishing the meat, she ate up all the noodles, even licking the soup remnants clean from the bowl, before wiping her hands and mouth with the paper napkin on the table.
Just as she was about to leave, she suddenly noticed the bulge of Su Mo's wallet sticking out of his jacket pocket.
Looking at Su Mo again, he was busy eating his noodles, seemingly unaware.
A fox-like cunning gleamed in Dongdong's eyes as she deliberately dropped the unused chopsticks on the ground, pretending to bend down to pick them up, and deftly snatched Su Mo's wallet as she stood up.
Wallet in hand, Dongdong didn't linger, tucking it securely in her pocket and striding away quickly.
She didn't notice the faint smirk on Su Mo's face as he continued eating his noodles.
...
Dongdong ran several blocks before ducking into an empty alley.
Feeling the thickness of the wallet in her hand, she grinned from ear to ear, "Someone in the Border dares to wander around with such a big wallet? Aren't they afraid of getting robbed one day?"
She squatted down, placed the wallet on her leg, and opened it with one hand.
Seeing it packed with a stack of paper money, she nearly jumped for joy, "So much! Enough to buy me a new arm! Woohoo—"
Halfway through her cheer, she noticed something off about the bills.
Moon Currency Paper Money tended to be grayish and not very saturated, but these bills were overly colorful and vivid?
Feeling uneasy, she quickly dumped out all the bills from the wallet, picking them up one by one to inspect them carefully.
"Nether... Netherworld Currency??!!" Dongdong stared at the paper bills printed with "Heaven and Earth Bank", blacking out, "Dammit! Why are these Netherworld Currency?!"
At that moment, a cold voice came from not far away, "Hey kid, what's your deal?"
Dongdong shivered in fright, looking in the direction of the voice.
Su Mo approached, arms crossed, with a fierce demeanor.
Dongdong froze for a moment, then stomped her foot in anger, pointing at Su Mo furiously, "Are you in a hurry to reincarnate or something? Putting Netherworld Currency in your wallet?!"
Su Mo shook his leg arrogantly, "What's it to you what I fill my wallet with? Even if I filled it with toilet paper, how does that justify you stealing my wallet?"
