Chapter 221: Laborious Labyrinth

When Susan declared this area to be a labyrinth she got the expected groan from both Rhyana, Luna and even Olivia. Yet Violet looked at her in confusion, unaware of what that word meant, seeing her friends confusion Luna opted to inform her.

"A labyrinth is basically a complex maze, except it will be full of traps and ambushes along with being confusing to navigate."

"Ohh okay, that doesn’t sound so bad though?" Violet uncertainly stated, yet based on the looks she received from that statement she began to doubt her words.

"Just wait till we get either lost, or go down the wrong path several times in a row." Mumbled Susan. "Iv never heard anyone speak highly of labyrinths, people only ever complain about them."

That brought Violet up short, that didn’t exactly sound all too entertaining, but she still wanted to remain somewhat optimistic so urged everyone to carry on walking.

They chose to go left again at the crossroads they were at, they then proceeded to travel down yet another identical corridor of fungi as to what the girls had already walked down before.

Still they had yet to identify a single trap or ambush, they had been inside of the forest for around half an hour by this point, each girl was beginning to get bored by the albeit colourful yet monotonous corridors that they walked through.

They soon reached yet another crossroad, 4 more options presented themselves and the girls once again took the left most path.

More colourful corridors led to more crossroads which in turn led to even more corridors. Their seemed to be no rime or reason to the layout to this place, even after over an hour of wandering through the Forrest the girls had yet to encounter a single trap or for to fight.

Fortunately, or perhaps unfortunately that soon changed.

The girls were casually walking down yet another pathway bathed in shadows when Olivia seemed to stumble over nothing, yet it was a destination mechanical ’click’ that rang out which alerted everyone that something was happening.

Olivia leapt back into her feet, her shield raised as the girls froze in place and kept close attention to their surroundings. Yet whilst they were vigilant to observe both ends of the tunnel they were within, they failed to keep watch over the one direction that they should have been.

Giant spiders, around the size of a small dog suddenly dropped down from the fungal roof overhead, almost 20 of them fell at once, some landing directly on the girls whilst the majority landed besides them.

Caught off guard by the sudden attack the girls failed to react fast enough to avoid the eight legged menaces first attack. Before the girls knew what was happening they felt sharp teeth pierce into their legs from the spiders on the ground. At the same time it was Luna and Rhyana who were unlucky enough to have a spider land on their head and they too felt bite land on their heads.

Despite the ambush the girls still responded with speed, their presences flared and domain type skills activated.

The spiders latched onto Luna suddenly felt their bodies begin to freeze, then with a shake every limb that was touching Luna’s body shattered as they collapsed to the floor below.

The ones on Rhyana were ruthlessly jolted with powerful electricity, their small bodies practically cooking in an instant, the sickening smell of burnt spider flesh instantly noticeable to the three beasts present.

The spiders near Olivia however, were entirely unable to do more than uselessly scrape at her armour, allowing the human warrior to slam her shield down onto them and end their life with a satisfying crunch.

The rest of the spiders were quickly dealt with by the girls, before long leaving them with a message from the system.

"Oh no they were venomous! Quickly everyone that was bitten come to me, I have a skill to deal with poisons." Susan hastily ordered, everyone other than Olivia gathered around the dogkin as she began using her skill.

Water gathered around the various puncture wounds in the girls, it then seemed to flow into the wounds for a moment before retracting, only when it came back out it was marred with the pitch black venom of the spiders. 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞

After a moment Susan let out a sigh of relief. "Woo, that could have been bad. Glad I had that skill, but let me know if any of you begin to feel strange, cannt be too careful." The girls all nodded at her words, knowing that when it came to both cooking and healing Susan was not to be doubted!

Meanwhile Olivia was twiddling her fingers as she stared down at the ground, her voice came out, sounding even more nervous that usual. "I-I’m sorry, that was my fault that I triggered the trap... s-sorry."

Susan was the one to answer, walking over and patting the girl on her shoulder and giving her a warm smile. "Don’t worry about it, it could have been any of us, we don’t blame you for making a simple mistake. Plus it was the first trap after over an hour of travel, we were all getting complacent."

The armoured warrior looked up slowly at her words, her emerald eyes gleaming through the slit in her helmet. She made a small sound of agreement as she nodded her head, but still returned to looking down at the ground a moment later.

"Okay well regardless, we should carry on. Luna and Rhyana, either of you want to take the lead, i think that the two of you have the best eye sight to look out for traps." Violet suggested. "Olivia, do you want to move to the back with me so you can guard us in case we get attacked from the back."

The girls agreed with Violet’s suggestion and soon they reorganised their formation and once more continued on with their journey through the fungal labyrinth.

As time passed the girls ran into countless dead ends, forcing them to backtrack. They triggered some more traps, avoiding others.

When they triggered a trap they were either attacked by large groups of lower leveled creatures, or had mechanical or magical traps trigger.

Effects like magical darts firing out from the walls and roof, a pit trap with sharp spikes lining the bottom or even a section of the fungal roof collapsing, forcing the girls to rush forward to avoid being crushed.

The fights were quite simple to deal with, other than the initial ambush the creatures were remarkably weak, the girls easily able to kill them with one or two attacks. Saddly that also meant that they provided very little experience so no one had managed to gain a new level.

Still the girls progressed. The first hour turned into 2 then 3, soon 5 whole hours had passed since they entered the labyrinth. By now even Violet ms initial optimism had diminished to the point that she was now understanding the general dislike for this type of feature.

Whilst the small challenges were kind of fun, the actual danger was significantly lacking. And each encounter was sepersted by quite some time, the closest encounter was a whole 20 minutes apart. So they just spent the vast majority of their time wandering down empty pathways bathed in shadows and lined with colourful giant muchrooms.

When it reached 6 whole hours since they had entered the labyrinth they finally encountered something new. The monotonous and narrow corridor seemed to open up into a much wider and open space.

The girls gathered a little bit away from that change. "Okay so I’m going to guess that the boss is inside that open space. It’s the only large space that we have come across since we entered this damn place." Rhyana muttered, her dislike of labyrinths clear for all to hear.

"Yeah I think your right, I say we just charge in and get this whole place over and done with. I want to get out and back into the open air." Luna stated, and seeing everyone else nod along their plan of action was decided.

So it was that the girls once more moved forwards, eager to be done with the fungal labyrinth and looking forward to a boss fight to sage their frustrations with the labyrinth.
