Chapter 37 - Mana Depletion

I didn't have any system to gauge my progress, sure, but I began to understand the idea behind them since just a single kill felt like I was gaining experience towards bettering myself; there was no bar to prove that, and obviously I learned from it, but there was just something... more.

Like I got stronger from the kill, like I had gone from level 2 to 3; there was a bolstering of my confidence and a mild increase to the strength I felt inside of my very being, something that was added on top of the adrenaline that pulsed through my veins.

I was stronger, I was faster, I was more aware and felt better than ever, and it wasn't because of the adrenaline that I had, nor was it the side effect of some random mental boost from killing this hobgoblin.

It was something I could actually feel, and that was interesting to me, but for the time being we were in the depths of a dangerous place and definitely in a place that needed my full awareness for us to come out on top.

Apparently the hobgoblins were only just a tad more profitable then their stunted cousins, with their ears and teeth being somewhat decent alchemical ingredients while their bones could occasionally be rather useful as well.

All we did though was just cut their ears off and pull out their fangs before moving on to the next cluster of enemies, where we found a handful of slimes and some fat, fluffy bat monsters that bared gigantic green fangs at us.

A new enemy that was fast, poisonous and very determined to bite us before flying away, and it became apparent that my fighting style was not meant for such an enemy, at least not with the hammer I had.

Izzy and Ulya were able to catch them before they got to close, but for me I was forced to rely on something else in order to succeed, and that was my magic; they were perfect targets for me, and shooting out fast bolts of flame to catch their fur on fire was... an experience.

I was learning how to cast magic quicker and make it strong enough to kill things, but I was also killing things with fire, so they were very... vocal about what was happening to them, causing me to pause as I felt my stomach do a flip yet again.

It was just something that I was going to need to push through though, since these bat monsters were actually tenacious and dangerous creatures hoping to bite into my neck and pour that fuming liquid into my veins to kill me.

Learning how to cast magic was already a Goddess send, and knowing now that it was whatever my mind could formulate within reason was enough to make this all the more tantalizing to me as I practiced it on the bats.

My interest lied in the flashy magics for combat, I can't even lie about that; I loved the way flames illuminated everything, the theatrics of it, or how lightning was so stylish and powerful as a combat oriented magic.

The way ice looked so pretty and elegant, how it could convey power and emotion so well in something that was both simple and intricate at the same time; how even something like water could be eye catching and beautiful just as it was deadly.

Honestly practically all magic was gorgeous and flashy, but the longer I thought of it the more I decided I wanted to try my real interest, which was lightning; I imagined the heat, the speed, the power that such an element demanded, and I tried to harness it within myself, to push it outwards and shoot it straight at one of the bats in a thick bolt of energy.

What emerged from my fingertips was little more than a static shock, and yet even that drained me of so much mana that I felt my vision sway a little as I stood my ground, trying not to fall over and expose myself to attack.

Before I could find myself the snack of the bat Ulya rushed to my side and sliced the monster in two, protecting me from it and catching me as I swayed a little on my feet, keeping me upright and pulling me close as she leaned down to speak to me directly, her tone laced with urgency and worry.

"Never try to cast such advanced magic on a whim! You're almost completely out of mana now! Stick to what you know when you are in the field, and save the experiments for when we return to the Inn!"

She was stern but also caring as she hugged me close, and I found my now tired mind thinking about how lucky Izzy was to have a woman like this as her partner, those giant tits pressing against me and promising warmth while her gorgeous face was enough to almost lull me into sleep.

If she didn't pinch my cheek and hiss "Stay awake now!", cutting through the exhausted haze that had suddenly draped itself over me, my body growing heavy and my eyelids wanting nothing more than to just close...

Thoughts that I had been having suddenly disappeared, and all that I could think about was... nothing, honestly, as my mana sluggishly trudged through my veins and tried to maintain the equilibrium from before, only to have me crash when it failed to do so.

Before I knew what she was doing the milf had pressed a vial against my lips and forced me to drink down a thick, bitter liquid, one that would have made me gag if I wasn't so used to drinking someone's cum.

Just as quickly as the exhaustion had took over my very being, that liquid helped to rejuvenate me just enough that I could think again, and immediately fear gripped my rapidly beating heart as I realized what had happened.

"I..! That was..!"

Ulya just hugged me closer stroking the back of my head and whispering "Mana depletion can kill you, Tuzi... be careful, please... Magic is THE double edged sword that has taken more lives then any other..."

I swallowed down the rest of the potion she had given me and nodded, feeling my mana replenish just enough that I was able to stand there without her support, but the moment she gently untangled herself from me I found myself yearning for her again.

"And... well..."

Now that the worrying was over, the milf smiled tenderly at me as she looked down at my crotch, staring at my erection and licking her lips a little as she whispered "Instincts are something, aren't they? In the face of death most creatures want nothing more than to ensure their species are able to continue on, and it seems even stronger in you Bunnykin..."
