Addicted After Marriage: Marrying My Abstinent Boss-Chapter 227: So Humble
"We..." Sophia Lowell.
"Not talking."
Zane Sterling interrupted her, paused for a moment, then turned around and left.
He didn’t want to talk.
He was afraid it might lead to another bad outcome. Right now, he couldn’t bear any new blows.
"Zane!" Sophia Lowell followed him.
She didn’t want to discuss anything else, she just wanted to say she misunderstood him.
Harry Langley didn’t follow but waited nearby for his instructions.
Zane walked quickly, afraid she would catch up.
Today, Zoe Walsh came over, and he specifically went out to take a look, only to see her feeding fish under the pavilion.
A gentle breeze blew; from a distance, she was hidden among the lush green lotus leaves, with the fallen petals forming a small boat in the pond.
She was like a fairy, the one he had always dreamed of.
That moment of relaxation felt like the only reprieve over the past half month.
Zane dared not approach, fearing he would disturb this peace.
"Zane, stop right there!" Sophia panted as she followed behind.
Zane was afraid she might trip if she hurried, so he stopped, his brow furrowed deeply.
"Ah..."
Sophia twisted her ankle and fell to the side.
Quickly turning around, Zane caught her.
As soon as he helped her up, he was enveloped in her warm embrace.
"..." Zane gritted his teeth and took a step back.
The scar on his back was pressed by the woman’s tight hug, and it felt like the scab formed that day was being peeled off again.
He furrowed his brow further.
He was being calculated by this woman.
She did it on purpose; she hadn’t really tripped.
She was skilled at this trick, and it had worked on Zane.
Feeling the unusual sensation on his back again, a hot, warm flow traced down his waist.
"Zane..." Sophia looked up, meeting his ink-like eyes.
Zane cautiously removed her hands, subtly observing that, fortunately, there was nothing stained on them.
It’s just that he was wearing a white shirt today, and it wouldn’t be good if she noticed.
"Harry!" Zane’s cold voice came, and Harry hurried over from nearby.
"Mr. Sterling." Harry was unsure of what to do and shivered with fear.
"Take the lady back."
Zane stepped back a few paces as Harry moved forward, standing between Sophia and Zane, completely blocking Sophia’s view.
Sophia stood stunned, her heart wrenched painfully.
Did he not want to see her now?
Not even giving her a chance to explain, did he think she wanted to discuss something with him?
"Zane, I..." Sophia turned aside to avoid Harry’s obstruction.
Harry hurried to block her until Zane disappeared into the yard.
"Miss, please don’t make things difficult for me..."
"If not for you, should I make it difficult for myself?"
Angry, Sophia pushed Harry aside, intending to chase after him, only to find he had already disappeared.
Frustrated, she clenched her fists tightly, wanting to punch the clueless Harry Langley in front of her.
She wanted to call Zane, but given the situation, he might not answer. She didn’t want to send a message either, thinking it might be better to explain face to face.
"Miss, then I..." Harry looked at her meekly.
Sophia glared at him, giving him a look that said he should leave now or get hit.
Receiving the look, Harry hurriedly withdrew.
This newly hired assistant was definitely less intuitive than Ethan Sinclair.
"See, being apart for too long creates a rift." Not far away, Clay Gable and Nathan Jennings witnessed the whole scene from the pavilion.
"We aren’t apart." Nathan murmured as he ate the dessert Clay handed over.
"We indeed aren’t, but we are too far apart." Clay Gable.
"Where’s the distance?" The gap between the master bedroom and the guest bedroom is less than ten meters; where’s the distance?
"Others have negative distance." Clay’s husky voice replied.
"What’s negative distance?" Nathan asked earnestly after taking a bite of dessert.
Clay didn’t answer, just smiled.
Nathan didn’t press further, finding it a good time to end the topic.
Talking to Clay Gable was overly tense; it felt like they never really chatted properly before. Today might be the first time.
Nathan picked up her phone and idly searched for: negative distance.
"..."
She swallowed a piece of cake, a blush spreading from her ears to her neck. 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮
She quietly covered the phone screen on the table, pretending to eat with calmness.
Clay observed her subtle actions but said nothing further.
It seemed they were getting closer, so he no longer needed to hide it, letting her know was better.
*
Sophia no longer had the heart to stay, sent a message to Autumn Lowell and Zoe Walsh, and then left the yard.
Just outside, she saw Cecilia Wallace rushing out of Zane’s car, glimpsing Zane dressing through the crack as the door closed.
Cecilia hurried past Zane’s car and got into her own vehicle behind, and both cars left one after the other.
Sophia called him, but he hung up.
Her hand trembled slightly as she held her phone.
Her mind was in turmoil, but remembering the incident with Tim Sawyer made her slowly calm down, knowing appearances could be deceiving.
"Miss." Ansel Gallagher stood by her side.
"How’s your driving?" Sophia asked.
"Huh?"
"I’m asking how’s your driving?"
"It’s alright."
"Follow them."
Sophia got into the car, and Ansel hurriedly followed.
Throughout the chase, Ansel dared not speak. He wanted to call and inform, but Sophia had confiscated his phone, adding to his anxiety.
Sweat formed layers on Ansel’s forehead, more nervous than his first time driving.
Boss, good luck to you.
Following Zane and Cecilia’s cars all the way to Sterling Group’s building.
It was Sophia’s first visit, only having heard of the location before, never seeing it firsthand.
The car stopped below the towering building, Sophia stepped out, craning her neck up to see the towering structure, with the large ’Sterling Group’ signage prominently displayed.
Most never get a chance to step into this building; its threshold far higher than ordinary companies.
Sophia suddenly felt reckless.
Previously, she only learned about Zane from files, and more perhaps from past company interactions. Looking now, he seemed like an unattainable alpine flower to her.
For such a proud person, who would have thought he would cry over a woman, kneel over a woman.
Yet, it wasn’t his fault, he... he was so humble.
Nathan Jennings said he was hurt.
Cecilia Wallace said he was her patient.
There must be some unknown story here.
She felt this misunderstanding couldn’t continue, and these matters needed to be clarified in person.
Zane had begun avoiding Sophia Lowell out of fear of unpleasant incidents between them, or making hasty, wrong decisions.
Since Zane was unwilling to see her, she’d take the initiative this time.
