Chapter 205: Chapter 205: He Cried

When she woke up the next day, Zane Sterling was still sitting beside her.

It was quite similar to last year when she had a stomach ache and collapsed at home; he broke through her front door and took her to the hospital.

Back then, he sat at Sophia Lowell’s bedside just as amicably, without a hint of shyness about their superior-subordinate relationship.

"You’re awake." He smiled.

Sophia stared at him, somewhat lost in thought.

His stubble had grown longer, as had his hair. If it weren’t for the suit, others might mistake him for some older cousin.

She didn’t speak, slowly getting up to freshen up.

"What do you feel like eating?" he asked.

"Anything’s fine," Sophia replied nonchalantly.

She estimated that Hugh Irving wouldn’t come today. With the Sterling family present, her presence would probably be more awkward.

Breakfast was still necessary.

If they ended up arguing, at least she’d have the strength.

Come to think of it, they had never really argued before.

Sophia felt that she might not even know how to argue. If something really happened, arguing would be useless; she would likely just turn away and leave.

She went into the bathroom, started freshening up, while Zane Sterling was outside on the phone ordering breakfast.

When Zane returned in the middle of the night, Eugene Sterling had already gone, leaving after cursing at the door for half an hour.

The ward had only the two of them.

It felt like they had returned to when they first got together, unusually quiet.

Her appetite was surprisingly good; she finished an entire bowl of porridge and had two dumplings.

Zane’s eyes involuntarily drifted to her lower abdomen, his lips curling slightly.

But then they fell again.

Sophia had never liked handling her own affairs, previously because she didn’t love him, so she didn’t bother.

Now she wasn’t asking.

She dared not interfere.

She was afraid she couldn’t handle it.

Or had she closed off her heart again, no longer caring?

He couldn’t help but reach out, tucking the stray hair behind her ear.

Sophia reflexively backed away a little.

Zane’s hand hung in the air, slowly withdrawing.

The hand was left hanging, as was his heart.

Sophia put down the chopsticks, "I’m full."

She was the first to stand up, quickly tidied up a bit, and then they both walked out.

All the way to the car, neither said a word.

The driver raised the partition in the middle.

"Sophia..."

Zane wanted to say something; her gaze was fixed outside the window, hands clutching the hem of her pants nervously.

She was scared too, not wanting to hear, nor daring to listen.

"Whether you believe it or not, I didn’t do it."

Zane sat beside her; Sophia moved aside, but he didn’t allow her to move any further, reaching over and domineeringly pulling her into his arms.

"Let go of me!" Sophia tried to push him away, but the more she pushed, the tighter he held on.

"No!" Zane held her tightly.

Sophia’s waist was pinched painfully by him.

They hadn’t been together for almost a month; even the warmth between them felt a bit unfamiliar now.

Zane was deeply longing for this woman’s presence.

He thought about her every day, every single moment...

Missing her to the point of madness!

"I’m sorry..." He held her tightly, wishing he could merge her into his own bones and flesh.

"I was drunk that day, you know when I’m drunk I can’t perform, the key card was switched on purpose..."

"I really didn’t do anything, can you believe me?"

"Sophia, I only love you, you know that, I only love you..."

Sophia, trapped in his embrace, couldn’t move. It was still that familiar scent, that burning body heat, yet somehow, she felt averse.

Zane whispered many words into her ear, none of which she could take in.

She only felt that the closer this man was to her, the more her heart twisted painfully.

Tears flowed uncontrollably, much to her dismay!

Despite mentally preparing herself thoroughly just now, repeatedly reminding herself not to cry, now it seemed all efforts were in vain!

"You’re hurting me," Sophia responded faintly.

Listening to her voice, Zane loosened his grip but didn’t release her from his arms.

"Could you not leave me?" He was as humble as the dust in the ground.

"..."

Sophia couldn’t answer his question.

"I won’t go on business trips in the future, I’ll stay home and take care of you and the child..."

"Let go of me." Sophia’s tone became even colder.

Child?

Thinking about it, she felt even sadder.

Zane slowly released his hand.

"..." The man’s eyes reddened, tears welled up, looking innocently hurt.

At this moment, he was like a little puppy.

His finely chiseled features looked exceptionally pitiful in the cramped backseat.

Sophia had rarely seen this man cry; today was the first time.

He was actually crying.

She wanted so much to reach out and wipe away the tears from his eyes; on ordinary days, she would certainly have done so, but now, she just wanted to stay quietly, undisturbed by anyone.

A man who was once decisive and ruthless in handling matters, meticulous to a fault, now was even capable of crying.

Sophia’s heart skipped a beat, sitting upright, unwilling to pay him attention, yet within her, a tumultuous storm had already erupted.

It felt as if all the strength in her limbs had seemingly been drained away, her hands clasped together uncontrollably, drenched in cold sweat.

She took a deep breath, feeling suffocated as if something pressed heavily upon her.

She slightly rolled down the window, letting the scorching summer wind blow in, mingling with the cool air inside the car.

The two disparate airs intertwined, like two irreconcilable territories, unwilling to merge.

Sophia left Zane Sterling with an icy silhouette.

He ultimately did nothing.

He needed to give this woman some time to digest.

The progress of the investigation needed acceleration.

Half an hour’s car ride seemed to stretch on like eternity.

Autumn Lowell and Zoe Walsh were waiting at the door.

They feared that Sophia might not come back with them.

In fact, Sophia didn’t want to return; she wanted to let the issue settle on its own, allowing herself a respite.

But she wasn’t alone; she had many people worrying about her, which made her feel even more sorrowful.

She initially didn’t want to bring up the matter, but seeing the expressions on everyone’s faces, it felt magnified infinitely, unable to be suppressed in her heart.

It was like knowing she was facing execution, the blade against her throat pressing inch by inch.

Fear and panic, the suffocation of impending doom arose spontaneously.

She couldn’t bear it.

As soon as she got out of the car, she clung to the door.

There was a choke in her chest, unable to go down.

"Are you okay?" Zane urgently reached out to support her.

She slightly withdrew her hand, uttered no words.

Zoe Walsh stepped forward and gave Zane Sterling a fierce slap across the face.

Snap!

The force wasn’t small; everyone present heard it.

The surrounding chatter came to an abrupt halt.

Sophia wasn’t too surprised, yet inexplicably, her heart ached all the more.

The harsher the punishment Zane endured, the more wronged she felt.

Sophia bit her lip, Autumn Lowell was already by her side, intending to take her away.

"Mom," Sophia called out to Zoe Walsh.

She knew Zoe wasn’t doing it for mere show, nor she wished to see it. The kinder they treated her, the harder it was for her to avoid thinking about the issue.

Zane had genuinely treated her well in the past, so well that she might never forget for her entire life.

So well that at the slightest mention of that incident, she would be overtaken by insurmountable grief.

She wasn’t as strong as she thought.

She had always believed that even if Zane did what he shouldn’t have, she could face it calmly, but in reality, she couldn’t withstand it.

She was like a ticking time bomb, ready to explode at any moment.

Zoe Walsh was so angry her fists were clenched tightly!

Zane did not retaliate, nor did he say anything, merely fixed his gaze on Sophia.

No matter; hit him as they wish, as long as she stays, he is willing to accept everything.
