Accidentally Yours, My Super Rich Second Husband-Chapter 80: Two Figures
Evander couldn’t recall the last time he felt such relief at the end of a workday. The ticking clock in his office felt louder than ever, each second dragging on as though time itself conspired to keep him away from home. Finally, with work done for the day, he left his office, coat draped over one arm.
The moment the doors slid open and he stepped out into the hallway, his eyes landed on Hugo’s desk. Hugo was still seated, fingers flying over his keyboard as he worked on something intently. But the moment Evander walked by, Hugo’s head shot up, and a teasing grin spread across his face.
"Heading home, huh? Let me guess—rushing back to check if she’s come back yet?" Hugo remarked, leaning back in his chair with a knowing smirk.
Evander shot him a warning glare, his jaw tightening. "Mind your own business, Hugo," he said flatly, though the faintest hint of a smile tugged at the corner of his lips.
"Oh, come on, boss," Hugo pressed, clearly enjoying himself. "You’re practically skipping out of here. Don’t tell me you’re not dying to see her."
"Last warning, Hugo."
Hugo chuckled, holding up his hands in mock surrender. "Alright, alright. Drive safe, boss."
He shook his head, his features softening as he turned and made his way to the parking lot. He slipped into the driver’s seat, the engine’s low growl breaking the silence as it came to life. The drive home felt longer than usual, every red light an annoyance, every slow car in front of him a source of frustration.
When he finally pulled into the driveway, Evander parked the car and stepped out, his heart lifting slightly at the thought of Delphinia. Surely, she would be there, her soft laughter filling the house as Ashton and Goldie played around her. He allowed himself a small smile at the image as he approached the front door and stepped inside.
"Ashton! Delphinia! I’m home," he called, his deep voice echoing through the spacious house.
The sound of small, hurried footsteps answered him first. Ashton came running into the foyer, his small face lighting up with joy. "Daddy!"
Evander crouched down, catching his son as the boy threw his arms around his legs. He ruffled Ashton’s hair affectionately, his eyes scanning the room behind him.
Goldie followed closely, the golden retriever’s tongue lolling out and his tail wagging so fast it resembled a helicopter blade. But as Evander looked around, his heart sank slightly. There was no sign of Delphinia.
"Where’s Delphinia?" he asked Ashton, trying to keep his tone casual.
Ashton looked up at him with wide, innocent eyes. "She didn’t come back yet," he said simply, his voice carrying none of the worry that Evander felt gnawing at his chest. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞
With a slight nod, forcing a calm expression onto his face. "Oh," he said, straightening up.
He made his way to the living room, his steps heavy despite his best efforts to remain composed. Sitting down on the couch, he pulled out his phone and stared at the screen for a moment before dialing Delphinia’s number. It rang once, twice, three times, and then went straight to voicemail.
Evander clenched his jaw, resisting the urge to curse aloud. His son was watching him, and the last thing he wanted was to let his frustration show. He set the phone down on the coffee table and leaned back, rubbing his temples.
"Daddy?" Ashton’s small voice broke the silence.
Evander opened his eyes to see his son standing beside him, looking up with a curious expression. "When is Delphinia coming home?"
"Soon," Evander said, forcing a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. He reached out and tousled Ashton’s hair. "She’ll be back soon."
Ashton seemed satisfied with the answer, but Evander wasn’t. The uncertainty gnawed at him, a feeling he despised. He was a man who thrived on control, on knowing every detail, every outcome. Now, he felt lost in a sea of questions, and it drove him crazy.
He resolved to wait until dinner. If she didn’t return by then, he would go and pick her up himself.
When dinner came and went, and still, Delphinia was nowhere to be seen. Evander’s patience had worn thin. Rising from his chair, he grabbed his coat.
"That’s it," he muttered under his breath.
"Where are you going, Daddy?" Ashton asked, looking up from his half-eaten plate of food.
"To pick up Delphinia," Evander said.
"I want to come too!" Ashton exclaimed, already hopping down from his chair.
Evander hesitated. He didn’t particularly want to bring Ashton along, but then again, maybe it would be good for his son to come.
"Alright," he said with a nod. "Go grab your coat."
A few minutes later, they were both ready, standing by the front door. Evander reached for the doorknob, but the moment he opened the door, he froze.
There, standing on the porch, were two familiar figures.
Evander’s mom stood confidently, her figure glowing in the gentle light spilling from the porch. Not a strand of her dark hair was out of place, and her confident expression stayed cool and composed. His father stood in the background, towering and stern-faced as always.
"Grandma!" Ashton shouted, his voice bursting with excitement.
Before Evander could say a word, Ashton bolted past him, throwing his arms around his grandmother’s legs. She laughed, a warm and melodic sound, and bent down to hug the boy.
"And Grandpa’s here too!" Ashton exclaimed, spotting his grandfather and running to hug him as well.
Evander’s father gave a rare smile, his large hand resting gently on Ashton’s shoulder. "Good to see you, sport," he said, his deep voice softened slightly.
Evander stood rooted to the spot, a mix of surprise and irritation flashing across his face. "What are you two doing here?" he asked, unable to keep the irritation creeping into his voice.
His mother straightened, her eyes meeting his. "Is that any way to greet your parents, Evander?"
Delphinia was still on his mind, but now he had another question burning in his mind. Why were his parents here, unannounced?
